WKR Staff Picks UFC 109
Randy Couture (17-10) vs. Mark Coleman (16-9)
Zach Krantz: Mark Coleman's time with Shawn Tompkins may be a huge help for him as it may be the first time Coleman has worked with a top trainer and gone through a legitimate training camp. However, he is too one dimensional and I do not see a massive evolution at this point in his career. Randy Couture will take this fight with a second round TKO finish.
Nick Becker: No matter what the ‘new and improved' Coleman brings to the table, Couture still holds the edge in every category there is. Although it won't be pretty, I expect "The Natural" to walk away victorious after 15 minutes of fierce man-hugging. Couture via Unanimous Decision.
Spencer Kyte: Randy holds the upper hand in what will be the most important factor in this fight: cardio. We know from recent experiences that Couture has the tank to go the full 15 in the trenches against younger, tougher and more talented fighters than Coleman. Yes, "The Hammer" went the distance with Stephan Bonnar last time out, but he didn't offer anything noteworthy in that bout. Couture by Unanimous Decision/
Chris Shanks: Randy Couture via TKO.
Zak Woods: I have my doubts about Couture but I still thinks he wins a hideous looking fight. Couture via split decision.

Nate Marquardt (29-8-2) vs. Chael Sonnen (23-10-1)
Zach Krantz: Sonnen has already begun hyping his next fight against Anderson Silva. Too bad he is not going to get there. Sonnen is a solid fighter who is just recently getting his deserved recognition. Too bad he is facing one of the most versatile fighters in the UFC. Nate has too many ways to finish a fight and Sonnen is not a finisher. Nate will get taken down, but when he gets back up the fight will eventually finish. Expect another second round TKO and this one is courtesy of Nate Marquardt.
Nick Becker: Nice work Chael - you've successfully riled up the MMA community. We can all agree that Sonnen has done a great job of getting noticed these past couple of weeks, but in the cage he'll have much more than he can handle. "The Great" wants another title shot in the worst way and he'll get it with a win here - I just hope that he finishes this fight with another Killer Instinct-style Ultra Combo. Marquardt by TKO Round 2.
Spencer Kyte: Chael Sonnen is right - Nate Marquardt is better at everything than he is. Marquardt by TKO, Round 1.
Zak Woods: Chael has been making waves and as a result people are taking notice but that doesn't alter the fact he is fighting a superior fighter. Marquardt via submission Round 2.
SBN coverage of UFC 109: Relentless
Mike Swick (14-3) vs. Paulo Thiago (12-1)
Zach Krantz: I am honestly torn with this fight. Thiago might be a good value when gambling, but I do think Swick will come out on top (said with no confidence). In the end, Thiago will not get Swick to the ground and Swick will get another KO on his mantle.
Nick Becker: With most of Swick's pre-fight talk surrounding a possible Dan Hardy rematch, I'm not so sure he hasn't overlooked his opponent. I fully expect Thiago to test Swick's ground game and while I don't necessarily think "Quick" will pass with flying colors, I believe he'll do just enough standing to earn a win on points. Swick by Unanimous Decision.
Spencer Kyte: Mike Swick is pretty good at everything, but great at nothing. Paulo Thiago isn't necessarily great at anything either, but he's shown the ability to beat a Top 5 opponent in the past. Swick, not so much... Thiago by Split Decision.
Chris Shanks: Mike Swick.
Zak Woods: Thiago may be a bad ass police commando from Brazil but in a cage he is just like any other fighter (guns aren't allowed, right?). Swick is the more technical fighter and while Paulo has shown improvement he struggled in the later rounds against Jacob Volkmann. I think we will see Thiago jump out to an early lead but fall behind in the later rounds. Swick via unanimous decision (29-28).
Demian Maia (11-1) vs. Dan Miller (11-2)
Zach Krantz: Simply put, this is a shitty match up for Miller. Miller has an advantage on his feet, but a huge disadvantage on the mat and that is Maia's strength. Too bad it is normally Miller's as well. I assume Miller has been working his stand up for this fight, but I think Maia will eventually send the fight horizontal and Maia will win via submission in Round 2.
Nick Becker: I love the fighting spirit of the Miller boys but I'm not ready to hop off the Maia bandwagon just yet. As long as Maia has shorn up some of his stand-up deficiencies, he'll be able to take this fight where he wants it. Once this one hits the mat, the end will be purely academic. Maia via Submission (of the Night) Round 2.
Spencer Kyte: Miller has more skill on the ground than most guys who get sucked in and submitted by Maia, so he should last longer than most. Yes, I'm putting a positive spin on the fact that he's going to get submitted and handed his second consecutive loss. That's how I roll.
Chris Shanks: Demian Maia.
Zak Woods: It will be interesting to see if Miller's submission skills neutralize Maia's submission skills. That being said we already saw a fight with Maia where he went against a strong Jiu-Jitsu fighter (Jason MacDonald) and Maia was able to get the submission just in a later round. Maia via submission Round 2.
Matt Serra (9-6) vs. Frank Trigg (19-7)
Zach Krantz: Entertaining, yes. Relevant in their weight classes, no. I like both guys, but the truth is that their pre fight hype does not match their fights. I will take the upset here as Trigg eeks out decision.
Nick Becker: I've had a really tough time picking this fight. On one hand, Serra has the power and submission advantage; on the other, I can picture this turning into a wrestling match with the advantage going to Trigg. I'm sure at some point Serra will land a haymaker on the jaw of Trigg, but I don't see him being aggressive enough to get the finish. Serra by Split Decision.
Spencer Kyte: Both guys should hang'em up and become television personalities. That is where I would rather see them. Serra hasn't won since beating GSP, while Trigg has managed a couple victories in that time. While Josh Koscheck made him look real old, Matt Serra is no Josh Koscheck, and Trigg should be able to squeeze out a win. Trigg by Unanimous Decision.
Chris Shanks: Matt Serra.
Zak Woods: I don't trust Frank Trigg at all. Serra via unanimous decision.
Mac Danzig (18-7-1) vs. Justin Buchholz (8-4)
Zach Krantz: Mac's fight to lose and he will not. Danzig is better on the mat and it is close in the striking department. Danzig will get the fight to floor and we will see a submission victory in round 1 for Mac Danzig.
Nick Becker: It's no secret that Danzig is fighting for his UFC life - he'll find a way to win. Danzig via Submission Round 2.
Spencer Kyte: Danzig by unanimous decision.
Zak Woods: I really, really, really want to pick Buchholz but I just can't do it. This fight will be close, similar to the Danzig-Bocek fight but I believe Danzig walks away with the win. Danzig via split decision.
Melvin Guillard (22-8-2) vs. Ronys Torres (14-1)
Zach Krantz: If you read my preview (you better have, I'm watching you) then you know my pick. Assuming Torres does not have UFC jitters or cage rust (injury) then this is his fight. He will score the takedown and secure a quick win. Torres via submission Round 1
Nick Becker: Powerful punching + Greg Jackson training - Recreational cocaine use = Guillard by KO (of the Night) Round 2.
Spencer Kyte: Torres by Submission, Round 1.
Zak Woods: Melvin Guillard loves being submitted and Ronys Torres loves to submit opponents. Sounds like a match made in heaven. I am a little worried about Torres' purported weight cut of 30lbs but not enough to change my pick. Torres via submission Round 1.
Phillipe Nover (5-2-1) vs. Rob Emerson (8-8)
Zach Krantz: Nover finally is training with a solid camp and top coaches. Dana White was not selling us a Mazarati, but it was not a lemon. The potential is there and thanks to Xtreme Couture we will see a TKO victory for Nover.
Nick Becker: Emerson has proven that he's one hell of a tough competitor, but I think we'll (finally) see Nover start to live up to some of his promise. Nover via Unanimous Decision in the Fight of the Night.
Spencer Kyte: Nover via unanimous decision.
Zak Woods: I don't think Nover is really that good, nor was ever any good other than receiving high praise from Dana White. But then again I am pretty sure Rob Emerson is awful. How do you pick between to awful fighters? Simple toss a coin. It came up heads, which means Nover wins via unanimous decision.
Brain Stann (8-2) vs. Phil Davis (4-0)
Zach Krantz: Phil Davis (a.k.a. Jake Rosholt 2.0) should win this fight. He is similar to Rosholt based off their wrestling pedigrees, they both have immense potential, but they are being brought into the UFC way too early. However, this will not be the night we witness that. Davis's takedowns will prevent this fight from turning into a boxing match, but he will not finish Stann as Davis wins a unanimous decision.
Nick Becker: Word on the street is that Davis is a beast. That said, I'm gonna go with WEC-era Stann showing up to kick ass in the name of the good ol' U.S of A. Stann by KO Round 1.
Spencer Kyte: Davis via submission Round 2.
Zak Woods: Worst possible match-up for Stann and a great match-up for Davis. Phil is a NCAA wrestling champion coming out of Penn State. Brian Stann is a former marine who punches really hard. Davis via ground-n-pound Round 2.
Tim Hague (10-2) vs. Chris Tuchscherer (17-2)
Zach Krantz: Tuchscherer will win by decision or Hague will score the KO. Not sure, but I will pretend to be confident and choose Tuchscherer by decision.
Nick Becker: Look for Tuchscherer to overwhelm the Canadian with strikes en route to a dominant stoppage. Tuchscherer via TKO Round 1.
Spencer Kyte: Hague via split decision.
Zak Woods: Tuchscherer via unanimous decision
Rolles Gracie (3-0) vs. Joey Beltran (10-3)
Zach Krantz: Really, really! A brawler with one week to train faces the jiu-jitsu of Rolles Gracie. Gracie via submission as soon as he wants.
Nick Becker: While Beltran will be a tougher test than Al-Turk would've been, let's not overlook the fact that he was still brought in to lose. Gracie by Submission Round 1.
Spencer Kyte: Rolles Gracie by very quick submission, Round 1.
Zak Woods: Gracie via submission Round 1.

marquart Submission 2 – going to tough but nate is too good.
miller UD – millers submission defense and jitz is being drastically underrated. hes learned under henzo and almedia for crying out cornflakes. he can last 3 rounds with maia and take a decision or late round KO.
