Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman and UFC 109 Hangover

Some thoughts while I recover from my UFC 109 hangover...
- Randy Couture breezed through Mark Coleman.
- According to Dana White, and other Zuffa employees, no one was giving Couture respect...Who in the world were they talking about? Randy was a five-to-one favorite, everyone on WKR's staff picked Couture, over 75% of our readers picked Couture. Yeah, he is old but basically everyone was picking Randy to win so where the hell did this come from?
- Couture's path to a title shot entails a crappy showing from the winner of Rampage vs. Rashad at UFC 114. Stay tuned....
- A lot of people believed that if Mark Coleman lost he would be out of the UFC. WKR no longer believes it. Why? Because of this little comment in the post-fight interview
"F*** you Tito...anytime douche bag." ~ Mark Coleman
Well, Mark just secured a fight when Tito Ortiz loses to Chuck Liddell for a third time. Basically, it is the circle of life.
- Chael Sonnen pulled the second huge upset of the night (the first is talked about after the jump). Sonnen's unanimous decision victory earned him a title shot. Thank god he talked a bunch of smack towards Anderson Silvva.
- Cheal Sonnen wrestling style is the equivalent of a rhino. He is just strong and rams into you and holds you down. Can we call it rhino-wrestling? I think that would fit with Sonnen's Republican theme...
- Maybe this is too harsh and maybe I am just bitter about being soooo wrong about the Marquardt-Sonnen fight but Nate Marquardt is a giant choke artist. He is the L.T., the Marian Hossa, the Spain (prior to the 2006 World Cup), the Andy Reed, the Marty Schottenheimer, the entire cities of Buffalo and Cleveland of MMA. Basically, he chokes in big fights.
- Joe Rogan forgot who Paulo Filho was....talk about AWKWARD!
- Hey, we got our second WEC plug! Hi Jose! Hi Urijah!
- Holy crap! Paulo Thiago just keeps winning despite looking horrible from a technical stand point. Granted that d'acre choke on Swick was sweet bu the stand-up, not so much.
- How much does the UFC hate Thiago? The guy has fought all three AKA welterweights (going 2-1) not to mention he was scheduled to fight Thiago Alves before Alves got hurt. So what is next, the loser of GSP-Hardy Dan Hardy, the winner of Fitch-Alves or the loser of Koscheck-Daley. Actually, that is probably what the UFC is considering...
- Paulo Thiago employed the paddy-cake boxing technique. Seriously! Thiago was countering by swatting with open hands at the punches Mike Swick threw.
- Pualo Thiago just needs to embrace his inclusion in the BOPE (Brazil's version of a SWAT team, except way more bad ass) and turn it into his nickname and put a giant BOPE symbol tattoo on his body. or maybe just his trunks. Whichever, they are basically the same thing...
- Paulo Thiago's trainer really, really wants Paulo Thiago in the UFC's video game. That would be a shooter, right?
- Mike "Skeleton" Swick is done at as a serious contender at 170lbs. I actually kind of want him to go back up in weight because I am afraid he is undergoing a Raiders of the Lost Ark melt.
- The UFC squeezed in Phil Davis' unanimous decision domination over Brian Stann but didn't show Joey Beltran's second round TKO win over Rolles Gracie. Pretty clear evidence of which fighter they want their pay-per view audience (aka the fans) to see. Update: They did show Gracie's loss after the main event.
- Phil Davis absolutely spanked Brian Stann. Stann, who has a rudimentary ground game was a perfect match-up for Davis, a former NCAA wrestling champion. The match-up itself makes one one wonder why theUFC would send the "All-American" Stann (he's a former marine) into the wrestling firing squad. This isn't the Crimea and the Light Brigade!!!
- Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller was called "an amateur kickboxing" bout by Joe Rogan. That about sums up this fight.
- Usually when fighters with similar skills fight those skills cancel out (especially for grapplers). While this trend gives fodder for those wishing to criticize Joe Silva for the Maia-Miller match-up, there is another possibility. Perhaps Joe Silva wanted Miller to negate Maia's jiu-jitsu and test the Brazilian on his feet. With all that said when Maia fought Jason MacDonald, another jiu-jitsu fighter, Demian submitted him in the third round.
- Joe Rogan encouraged fans to watch a pirated video of a Dan Miller IFL victory...at least Rogan is being consistent. (Here's the video for the curious people out there).
- Matt Serra KO's Frank Trigg back to FSN announcing gig...
- "[Matt Serra] has some of the best video blogs out there." ~ Joe Rogan. Nice to see what the UFC really values in their fighters.
- Frank Trigg with hair looks like...well...I am not really sure. Something that is creepy, and horrible yet somewhat normal looking.
- "I am kind of like Gimili from Lord of the Rings" ~ Matt Serra
- Every time a corner-man (corner-person?) swore Joe Rogan responded by calling them a "potty mouth". God I love UFC commenting.
- 1st WEC PPV plug!!! Prepare for a lot more in the run-up to WEC 48.
- Goldie attempted to justify Mac Danzig's three fight losing streak by saying he lost to top contenders and then mention Josh Neer. NEER IS NO LONGER IN THE UFC!!!!!! YOU LIE MIKE GOLDBERG!
- Speaking of Danzig, he won and staves off execution for another two fights.
- Brainstorm: Some people have already proposed 145lbs. but Danzig has already dropped one weight class, could he realistically do it again? So, how does Mac save face in downgrading in competition by going to the WEC's 155 lbs. division? He needs one more win in the UFC and then needs an WWE style "incident" with Jamie Varner to justify the move. Make this happen Joe Silva!
- "This is the goddamn three stooges...Put in on the side and watch Arianny fall on her head" ~ Joe Rogan on Ice Gate.
- "We need Zamboni" ~ Mike Goldberg on Ice Gate.
- "Joe Silva aged about 10 years in 2009" ~ Mike Goldberg. I guess that means that the Great Injury Blight of '09 is like the 1917 influenza strain...
- Phillipe Nover SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!
- Actually Phillipe Nover and Rolles Gracie both deserve a Glengarry Glen Rose dressing down.
- Biggest bust of the night, and biggest upset of the night, was Rolles Gracie GOD AWFUL performance against Joey Beltran.
- Bioshock 2, Shutter Island, Aliens vs. Predator 2, the U.S. Marine Corps, Harley Davidson, and Bud Light. Those are the sponsors that Zuffa secured. So, video games, motorcycles, crazy thriller movie about psychopathic murders, beer and military service is what the target audience wants. Woo-hoo!

They did show
The Gracie fight right after the main event.
Nobody's perfect...well there was this one guy but we killed him.

Marquardt was dissapointing, yes, but nowhere near as big of a letdown as Mike “Not So Quick” Swick… at least for the people (read: not me!) who picked him yet again…
The guy is all hype – never beaten a top 10 opponent, let alone a Top 5 welterweight. Technically unsound boxing aside, Paulo Thiago is a Top 5 welterweight. That D’arce was quick and tight… 2-1 against AKA is pretty damn hard to do.
Nate just simply got steamrolled by a guy none of us give enough credit to. Sonnen has fantastic wrestling and is a handful when he gets you on the ground.
Nate missed a glorious opportunity, but Swick shit the bed on the big stage for the second straight fight.

I am sorry but Thiago’s striking may be powerful but it is soooo ugly!

This ain’t a beauty contest, son, it’s a fight and Thiago’s ugly arsenal is beating the bejesus out of people these days… and holding his own against Fitch.

whats up
hey zak i love the site. just signed up
.......
firstly,
love the jimmy eat world before the cage casts
secondly,
am i the only person that thought guillard lost that fight?
to me that was a horrible decision.
thirdly,
Dana is bruuuuuuuuuuuutal and for all the good that he has done, his potty mouthed short sightedness has run it’s course. Randy is “top 5”. riiiiiiiiiiight.
joe silva
ohh one more thing.
why does joe silva get so much credit? he is like God. when something good happens it’s because of him, when something bad happens he works in mysterious ways.
his last like 5 cards have sucked save for a bj penn and deigo match up that was a no brainer
Joe Silva is the man behind the curtain so to speak.
He is the one who is drawing out the general blueprints for each division while putting together a majority of the fights to (a) create entertainment or (b) build up a prospect.
Yeah, the last cards have had difficulties but there were also a lot of injuries.
For the record I went off about the Leites-Silva match-up…and still do from time-to-time
