UFC 109 Spike Prelminary card a Ratings Record

photo via FIGHT! Magazine

UFC 109's Preliminary card on Spike drew 1.7 million viewers. That surpasses the previews ratings peak by 200,000 viewers. The UFC 109 Spike preliminary card also matched the average viewership of UFC Fight Night 20, which took place in January. That event marked the first time an UFC event was held on a Monday.

The Spike card featured TUF season six winner, Mac Danzig, in a fight against Justin Buchholz. Melvin Guillard vs. Ronys Torres was also featured on the card.

Spike Preliminary Card Ratings
 - UFC 109: 1.7 million viewers
 - UFC 108: 1.5 million viewers
 - UFC 106: 1.3 million viewers
 - UFC 104: 1.4 million viewers
 - UFC 103: 1.4 million viewers

UFC 109's Countdown show was the second highest rated. Perhaps there is a correlation between the two.

There is another possibility that WKR would like to point out. Saturday was "Snowmagedon" in the Northeast and easterly Midwest. Perhaps the ratings jump was due to more people staying home instead of heading out to bars to watch the UFC event.

Of course, it could be that more fans just wanted to see these preliminary fights. The real question is whether or not this translates into higher pay-per view buys?

Mac Danzig still has some name value due to being a TUF champ

103 – Escudero-Miller, McFedries-Drzwal
104 – Bader -Schaefer, Hardonk – Barry
106 – Saunders – Davis, Rosholt – Grove
108 – Kampmann-Volkmann, Miller – Lauzon

All of those just seem like they would easily out draw this last one.

Have they gotten consistently higher ratings with each episode or are they up and down?

I think you are under estimating the power of being a TUF champ but 108’s prelim was the best IMO

the first four all head steady around the same number 1.4 million, this one had a nice jump. I would have to run a regression to see if was significant. But we really don’t have that much data to draw any definitive conclusions.

If you are right and it is being a TUF champ, losing 3 straight and being one of the most boring guys in the sport (personality wise, not fight wise) and still being a draw proves how big this show can be for a guys career.

Escudero and Bader were TUF champs as well. I would have thought they were more popular than Danzig.

Either way, improved numbers just means this will continue and more free fights = win.

I dont disagree that mac isn’t very good.

But he was the villain of the show. Hell, people still talk about Kendall Grove and that guy is, well, a work in progress

I think this is another indicator of serious interest in UFC 109. I would not be surprised if this card actually does around 500,000 buys.

it will be interesting to see what happens. Some predictive metrics (MMA Payout/Tapology) have this pegged between 300-400.

We will have to wait and see though

The UFC hasn’t released any China related numbers. I don’t speak Mandarin so I can’t really help you with that.

I do know that in 2007 137million Chinese had internet access. Two years later and I wouldn’t be shocked if it were near 160-175 million now. But that is still less than 20% of the total population.
