Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Does anyone have any idea what Tim Sylvia is doing?

Breakfast of champions relics

It was just a week ago when the Ohio Athletic Commission refused to sanction a bout between Tim Sylvia and Wes Sims for late March.

In the wake of that ruling Tim Sylvia stated that he didn't want to fight "bums" and is on the "comeback". But then we learn that Sylvia has turned down a fight with Josh Barnett (read as: comeback fight) while being connected to a fight with Wes Sims (read as: bum fight) or five-time World's Strongest Man champion Mariusz Pudzianowski (read as: freak fight).

So, which is it Tim? Will it be the comeback fight, the freak fight or the "guilty pleasure" bum fight?

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Let's face facts. Sylvia's stock as a former UFC heavyweight champion took a potentially fatal blow when he was knocked out by the 47 yer old Ray Mercer. While Sylvia followed that horrendous loss with a solid win over Jason Riley, the MMA community at large has very little respect for Tim. Victories over Sims or Pudzianowski would do very little to remedy that situation. Luckily there is still a need for heavyweight fighters in both Strikeforce and DREAM, which could help Tim on his self-professed "comeback"; perhaps elevating Sylvia into a fight with Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers or even a rematch with Fedor. Yet, when given the opportunity to fight a legitimate opponent Sylvia turns the fight down in favor of "freak" and "bum".

What is the end game here or is this simply Monte Cox's traveling three ring circus?

I’d say best case for Sylvia is to fight Sims and win handily as a confidence booster (and a way to get a win under his belt) and then take on Barnett. Pudz is very much a high risk/low reward fight though (much like Mercer) and I’d keep Tim away from him.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Sylvia is done

he doesn’t have the competitive drive, he doesn’t WANT to fight anymore. He’s just there to cash his check. The man weighed in at 310 vs. Mercer. 310 lbs!!! And he got KTFO. I think Fedor ruined him mentally. I feel sorry for the guy, but he is on the backside of his career and no matter how much he talks he just doesn’t want to be there, or he would be fighting Barnett.
