Pacquiao vs. Clottey Hangover

0313-manny-pacquiao-primary_20100314002134_335_220_397x224_medium

Some thoughts while I recover from my Pacuqiao vs. Clottey hangover...

- WKR doesn't normally delve into the world of boxing (we suggest you check out Bad Left Hook for more coverage) but anytime Pacquiao is fighting we are there with eager eyes to watch the Filipino prizefighter go to work. Just keep Manny away from the karaoke machine

- It wasn't much of a fight as Clottey covered up in the defensive while Manny unleashed an onslaught of punches (approximately  1,231) for 12 rounds. Pacquaio won via unanimous decision as the three judges scored it 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109. Clottey only won one round.

- For those that want to criticize the fight as being one sided WKR sees the bout as the equivalent of a lopsided Super Bowl. Sure, you want the game to be competitive but the whole point of watching is to be apart of a cultural event.

- Going into the fight the one factor that much of the media gravitated towards was the fact that Joshua Clottey was a larger fighter. Too bad Clottey is a defensive fighter (Iole called it "tortoise-shell"), which negated his size advantage.

- Always fun reading about how the Philippines shut down to watch Pacquiao fight. Plus WKR really enjoys hearing their national anthem. Definitely a degree of pageantry that doesn't really exist in MMA.

- HBO's boxing announcing crew is light years miles ahead of any announcing crew in MMA. Sorry Goldie and Rogan but these guys are really, really good with their play-by-play and immediate analysis. That being said, it would've been nice if they weren't so critical. At one point it felt like being out to dinner with our mother....

Update: Here's the "BANG BANG BANG" video. In fairness to Jim Lampley, he was just trying to be Gus Johnson...

- Loved how the fight was in Cowboy Stadium (reported attendance of 50,994). Hopefully this is a trend that returns to boxing and transitions into the UFC. In other words, we really like the Cowboy cheerleaders but can we get the Cowboy cage dancers too?

- So, how did the fight play with the masses? Out at the bar, WKR attempted to pick the mind of several other sports enthusiasts and strangers. The prevailing opinion was: "I'll care when Pacquiao fights Mayweather".

- After Mosley vs. Mayweather can we pretty, pretty please get Pacquiao vs. Mayweather? No? Figures...

They were really hyper-critical last night. Duddy-Medina wasn’t that bad of a fight. Soto-Diaz wasn’t a bad fight. But they acted like they were being tortured. And Lampley had yet another off night. BANG! BANG BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG BANG BANG! BANG BANG! BANG!

Don't agree on the commentary.

They didn’t point out some good hits by Clottey in the later rounds due to wanting to say the match was already over.

Lots of repetition too.

The commentary was kind of bad.

I remember when I was in the navy, all the filipinos had their own little click they were refered to as the filipino mafia. I bet they were elated about the news. Also, that last guy sure is ugly.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley . . .

would be way better than Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr.

Freddie Roach has already stated that he doesn’t want Manny to face Mosley for two reasons:

  • not enough money
  • Mosley is too good.
These are his words. Why do they want to face Mayweather Jr. instead of Mosley. Well, they know Floyd is not a high volume puncher and they know he’s a defensive counter puncher. Yeah, they will say he’s a challenge but they also know that they can get more money against Mayweather Jr. Not to mention Floyd will work overtime to garner interest with trash talk.
