Miguel Cotto won't rule out MMA (sigh)

Wait, boxers and MMA fighters bleed the same color? That's inconceivable!

Wait, boxers and MMA fighters bleed the same color? That's inconceivable!

Sherdog has a video interview with Miguel Cotto, who was in Columbus for WEC 47, as he trained with Miguel Torres prior to his fight with Joseph Benavidez. (it really showed...)

The conversation inevitably turns to James Toney, boxing vs. MMA *sigh* and would Cotto ever considering transitioning from the 'sweet science' to MMA. Of course Cotto says he won't rule it out, which makes complete sense as it it would be a nice pay day at the tail end of his career when Cotto is no longer relevant in the world of boxing.

Ricardo Mayorga and James Toney are in the process of making the "twilight" transition so maybe this a sign of things to come...

Unique Crossover

Miguel is only 29 and plans on retiring from Boxing sooner rather than later. His role in major Boxing is diminishing and outside of a rematch with Margarito, big fights are fleeting in the future. If Miguel took 9 months to relax and then dedicated himself to training MMA, he could easily make his debut around age 32.

I would be very interested in seeing how well he does under those circumstances. Most boxing crossovers come from washed up fighters who try to cash in on name value covered in dust. Miguel could easily box for the next 6 years but he wont have fights with the same magnitude of his loss to Pacquiao or even his win over Mosley.

Cotto is a small 147 who has to move up to 154 to find fights, that doesnt bode well for the future. Transfer that to MMA though and he is a force to be feared. If he can max out his frame at 155 and absorb enough wrestling, he can be a legitimate LW threat.

If only it were that easy…… Also, he’s gonna need some BJJ or else he’s gonna get subbed quick.

its certainly not easy

but its not other worldly either. Of all the recent crossovers, Cotto has the best chance to be a legitimate title contending fighter. Cotto is still in his physical athletic prime (traditionally), and if he walked away from Boxing and made MMA his focus, I fully believe he could contend.

Being said, he wont. The MMA line was in passing. He wants to have a few more big paydays from Boxing (dude has talked retirement for 18 months at least) and when he finally does hang them up, he is 3 times more likely to cherry pick a “comeback” fight in NYC than to dedicate himself to a brand new sport with smaller paychecks.

Ovechkin vs. Malkin would be a great grudge match, Maybe M-1 can promote it

Uh

Didn’t that Canadian hockey player end up starting a riot when James Thompson started GNP’ing him?

not exactly NHL, but we filled that sport’s position, good call

Wiki research says Steve Bosse played 8 seasons of pro hockey, most with the North American Hockey League. Bosse has a 6-1-1 MMA record with a win over Wes Simms (!!!) and that No Contest with Thompson. Last fought Sept 2009
