Jones vs. Vera and UFC on Versus Hangover

Funny_pictures_2739_medium

Some thoughts while I recover from my hangover...

- Jon Jones is really, really good. Not like you needed anyone to tell you that.

- Can we call Jones' elbows cudgels? How about a truncheon?

- One of the fun things about Brandon Vera's nickname is we get to write pithy headlines like, "Jon Jones Handled 'The Truth'". For that reason alone Vera deserves a spot in the UFC.

- While there was no shame in Vera covering up after Jones attempted brain surgery with his elbow as the scalpel you can bet on the "Vera has no heart and quit" comments to start popping up.

- If there was a theme to this fight card it was weird things happening. Usually it involved breaking the rules and point deductions.

- Did anyone else see Daniel Roberts in that car crash? I think he was hit by a F-John Howard.

- "We officially welcome Junior dos Santos to the big time" ~ Mike Goldberg. Pretty sure he was already there but let the hype machine cogs do their work.

- This whole card felt very rushed. Well, if we took out the commercials and actually dealt with fight time it seemed rushed.

- Yep, that was an Extenze commercial you saw with Jimmy Johnson. The quality of advertisers is amazing.

- Buentello dislocates a pinkie but refuses to quit when Herb Dean brings in the doctors to look at the injury. Paul pleads with the doctor to snap it back into place and then runs immediately back to his corner like a kid who was just given a dollar to go buy his favorite candy.

- Now Kongo is deducted a point for knee to the head of a downed opponent. Cheick does it again but Herb Dean says that Paul was "playing the game" and no point was deducted.

- Cheick Kongo actually used a smart gameplan to attack Buentello who has even less ground game then Cheick.

- Oh my god, there were even more commercials than a Spike show and most of them were crappy local ones followed by Versus promos.

- Joe Rogan said that Shane Carwin had 11 fights 11 KO's. More like 6 KO's. Ladies and Gentlemen: the UFC Hype Machine!

- While Josh Rosenthal was trying to figure out what the hell happened with the "eye-poke" Goldie said that Sakara would love to continue. Really, REALLY!? Are you sure he wouldn't want to walk away with a first round TKO victory?

Star-divide

- The Irvin eye-poke issue is just another reason why athletic commissions need to use instant replay.

- Joe Rogan needs to take a lesson from Sakara and bring back the power fuzz.

- Anyone else happy that there was no Todd Harris. It's weird that he's much better at announcing the moguls at the Olympics.

-  Is it just us or are the WEC 48 promos all about Urijah Faber? What happens if Jose Aldo Rick Rolls Faber?  Then where does that leave the WEC. Also, how can Faber be the most "dominant featherweight" if he's the third best 145 pounder in the WEC?

- Bang Ludwig's ankle is still somewhere inside the cage.

- The UFC gave out three "Knockout of the Night" bonuses but Brendan Schaub was left out on that money.

  • Jones is definitely a future champion and I’m not necessarily talking about light heavyweight champion. He actually may fill out in his late twenties.
  • WEC is Urijah Faber. That’s their overall marketing plan.
  • I really feel sorry for Brandon Vera. His trash talking license has been officially revoked. Going old school, reinventing himself, evolving, whatever . . . just stop.
  • Junior Dos Santos versus Cain Velasquez? or better yet, since Carwin was getting a title shot after defeating Gonzaga why not JDS vs. Lesnar?
  • Next week should be GREAT.

Cain vs JDS

Sick fight. I’d be worried for Cain, honestly. I know he ate a couple against Kongo, and JDS is even faster/stronger. Could be lights out if he’s not careful.

The fights were ok

I think that this card will get about 1.3 mil views. I watched with a bunch of casual fans . They didn’t even know there was a card on, and then they said oh is it on spike. He didn’t even know he had vs as a channel. As for the card, I was a little disapointed. The ending to the Irvin fight was shit. And then all the breaks the refs was giving the fighters. I thought that the ufc came of looking a little amatuerish. As for JDS and bones jones. they r both for real. I would love to see Cain vs jds. Bones should fight thiago silva or mayb Ryan bader.
