Golf clap for Strikeforce
I’ve never been a huge fan of the vast majority of the business decisions made by the brain trusts over at Strikeforce but I have to admit they are nothing if not ballsy. As you may or may not know, Strikeforce has just released their intent to have THREE, that’s right, THREE star studded title fights for their April 17th card in Nashville. They are tentatively scheduled to be:
Lightweight title fight of Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki
Light Heavyweight title fight of Gegard Mousasi vs. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal
Middleweight title fight of Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson
While this all looks great, it is Strikeforce after all. There is still a very strong possibility of all this grandeur being bungled and still a whole lotta time for Murphy’s Law to come knocking. The rumblings of CBS strongly hoping Herschel Walker takes the time out of his busy schedule to appear on the card is only making my glass half full feel more empty.
Another “dilemma” with three title fights is the time. As with its show in November, CBS has allocated a two hour time slot to Strikeforce which could be an issue if these three title fights end up going the distance. I don’t really know why this would be a major problem for a network like CBS. Are live sports something new? I’m pretty sure we’ve seen games of all sorts go into overtime. Does the world stop spinning? SPIKE, the everyman’s, beer swilling network has somehow deciphered this voodoo so why not CBS? The good news is these people have six weeks to figure it out. The bad news is these people have six weeks to screw it up.
