UFC signs James Toney (sigh)

James-toney-facepalm_medium

When did the "F" in UFC begin to stand for freak?

Today, FiveOuncesofPain reported that the UFC signed forty-one year old boxer, James Toney. Toney does have a boxing pedigree as a middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight boxing champion but then again so does Ray Mercer.

One thing is for sure, the Toney signing undercuts anything that White has to say about other promotions' using freak fights for whatever purpose.

Consider this "James Toney signing day" reaction thread.

Bonus picture after the jump.

Eh, I don’t thinks its that big of a deal. They’ll prove their point to boxing and make Toney a sacrificial lamb all the while doing a HUGE PPV buyrate.. Then they’ll cut him and throw it in boxing’s face every chance they get.

Dana really can't lose

Before the fight Dana will talk up his record, his knockouts, and how ‘feared’ he is in boxing. He’ll use that to counter the comparisons to Hershal Walker by saying Tony is a legit fighter and a real stand-up threat.

If Tony wins, Dana can tell all the critics to to go eff themselves and if he loses he can shut all the boxers up, cut him, and crow about how great MMA is.

it seems essentially Dana had 2 choices with Toney, a ufc contract or a restraining order

WHY GOD WHY

Bad move by the UFC , this reaks of the “freakshow” , Hell at least Kimbo actually knew a little MMA and smashed a couple cans first.

Hell at least Kimbo actually knew a little MMA

Toney at least has one pro skill for MMA whereas Kimbo had an barely-amateur level skill.

are you kidding me?
i hate this signing and i wish james toney would just go away

but you just compared an ex champion in multiple boxing divisions with an ex street fighter and you said the street fighter knew a little mma???

james toneys boxing skills shouldn’t be laughed at, if they want to have him one and done do what they did with Sean “hands of fate” Gannon have him fight a guy with good takedowns and have him brutalize him.

This isn't Boxing

If a fighters only chance is a Punchers chance then they don’t have a bright future in MMA. I can picture toney throwing his hands up Josh neer style if he gets taken down. This is MMA.

oh well

Hey at least it will draw a alot of james toney fans over from boxing. Anything to help the sport grow I say. Just like kimbo brought the intetnet fans, and brock brought some wrestling fans.

Blah

I don’t like it really, but I’ll reserve real judgment until I watch him fight. I’m curious to see who they’ll match him up with right off the bat.

Hadoken!!

not a big deal really

he’ll just join the rest of the stable of figthers in mma with no ground game. see manhoef, semtex, etc.

if someone is dumb enough to stand with him, toney will have an easy night.
