Florian vs. Gomi and Fight Night 21 Hangover

Passedout-photos-1219293887-55918_medium

Some thoughts while I recover from my Fight Night 21 hangover...

- Kenny Florian's victory over Takanori Gomi certainly raised his stock for lightweight contention. Unfortunately there is this guy named B.J. Penn at the top of the mountain and he is really, really good.

- It was nice to see Gomi fight in the UFC but he is no longer a top lightweight and that's alright. All athletes fade away eventually.

- I can't wait to see people complain about Firas Zahabi's coaching for Kenny Florian. I mean honestly, all Florian did was stand in front of Gomi and throw jabs. Attacking an opponent's weakness while favoring your strengths? That's bitch fighting... (sarcasm)

- PRIDE FOOTAGE!!!!!

- Well, that Roy Nelson knockout of Stefan Struve sure was convenient to get the show back on schedule.

- Stefan Struve is the Kwami Brown Tyrus Thomas of the UFC. He has all the physical tools, a high ceiling and plenty of time to develop but it really hasn't shown up inside the Octagon yet and that's okay. Now, if in four years he still can't throw a jab then feel free to worry.

- Ah, the surprise stadium blackout. I bet

-Thanks to the blackout we got to see Gleison Tibau burn through Caol Uno.

- Tapout commercial with Dan Henderson and Jake Shields...awkward!

- Great win for Jorge Rivera. For a guy to lose a daughter and find a second resurgence in the UFC is

- Straight right hands are Nate Quarry's kryptonite.

- Jeff Hardy is joined up with TNA Wrestling? Good for him.

- "Two of the top ranked [pause] lightweights...[pause to think how to cover up this stupid comment]...in Europe right now [saved!]" ~ Golide

- Goldie and Rogan sounded extremely tired throughout most of the night. A third person in the booth may have helped add a little energy. Hopefully these guys aren't burnt out by next weekend...

- It is fair to say I was completely wrong with my initial analysis of Ross Pearson who I thought was simply a British brawler. Ross clearly has more refined striking then I gave him credit for, plus Pearson is still young. He may look like a thirty-five year old coal miner but the guy still has some time to develop some ground skills. And that's the real question with Ross. Will he be able to incorporate enough skills together to challenge the top wrestlers in the division?

- COMMERCIALS!!!! Seriously, it was 8:14 before Bruce Buffer began the intros for the first fight of the night. If we take out Mike Goldberg's tease we probably watched a solid 11 minutes of commercials to begin Fight Night 21. If you have a DVR use it.

- Here is Columbus, Ohio we were treated to not one but two Dream Girls commercials. Yep, that is a strip club...

  • Pearson has been looking REALLY good in his last two fights. I think he would give Maynard some real problems standing up.
  • Quarry? Rivera was simply thinking, I saw the Rich Franklin fight, just punch down the line, I’ll nail him.
  • Rivera and Quarry look like older fighters. They’re 2 years older than Franklin, 3 years olders than the current MW champion.
  • Talking about Rivera making another run at the title is CRAZY. He’s not touching guys Marquardt, Sonnen, Belfort, Okami, Cote or Belcher.
  • Gomi, no comments.
  • GO ROY NELSON!
