Top 5 Most Wanted: Heavyweight Division
We all wish we could have Joe Silva's job (minus the responsibilities of course) and choose who fights who for our entertainment. This is part one of a five part segment where WKR picks their top five most wanted match ups in the UFC. We will do one for each weight class and today we start with the big boys. The reason we hold this to the UFC is because all the following match ups must be realistic, as in they could actually transpire. Therefore speculating across promotions does not work. In addition the fighters must not already be scheduled to fight.
However, the most important part of this series is to hear what you the trusted readers want. Let everyone hear it, who do you want to see fight?
- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Mirko Cro Cop: A rematch of their 2003 interm Heavyweight Championship fight would make sense if Cro Cop gets past Barry. People loved the Couture/Nogueira fight and the aftermath made both of them appear stronger. Fans would love the Pride throwback and the "legends" fight. I know Rodrigo won the first time and he is probably the stronger fighter right now, but I think the years are getting to him and he is on the down side of a Hall of Fame career. A win for Cro Cop would be a huge bump for him and the marketing of a legend fight makes this a very simple sell. It could easily be the three fight on a major card or a two fight on an overseas fight card.
- Gilbert Yvel vs. James Toney: The way Toney has spoken and approached the sport has caused many MMA fans to hope for a Toney fed meal to a UFC powerhouse. However, the UFC probably wants to use Toney a little bit before they show how versatile true MMA fighters are. This fight would provide fireworks and most likely provide Toney with a "W" in the UFC which is what the UFC did with Kimbo. Hey, maybe we would actually see Yvel take the fight to the mat. That would be crazy.
- Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar III: This is so far from happening and probably will not, but the hype for this fight would be incomparable to anything from the past. In addition, another loss might actually mean Mir's stops yapping about Brock (probably not though).
- Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos: Not much to say here as this is the big fight that everyone wants, but we will not get. Realistically the UFC does not want them to face each other as it will eliminate (for a period of time) the loser as a title contender. I assume Junior will be fighting again, but he most likely will get the next shot after Cain gets the Brock/Shane victor. However, how is this not the number one?
- Pat Barry vs. Stefan Struve: Please, please make this happen. I know freak show haters might get defense because that is the reason I want this to happen. Watching Roy Nelson fight Struve was visually hysterical. I was literally laughing out loud when they approached for the first time. Now imagine someone shorter, who is a kickboxer. It actually has some potential as a real match up too. If Barry beats Cro Cop they are probably at the same level and if the UFC wants to promote Struve he would have a huge advantage on the mat.

First one would be okay, but I got a feeling it’s going to be a lot easier to ko Big Nog now, still a legend tho.
Yeah, gotta agree on the gilbert fight, he’s going be going for that single or double ASAP. I’ll doubt he’ll do well considering against junior who’s not even on the same level as toney boxing wise.
Mir vs Brock, wouldn’t mind seeing that either, but more so for pre- and post-fight trash talking and spontanious momment of venting.
Cain vs Junior, nah don’t want to see that, like both, but it’s bound to happen.
The last, wouldn’t mind seeing that for entertaiment reasons and also to that big guy not use his reach and to see him fall. TIMBER!!!!
I'd like to see
Gonzaga vs. Kongo… two guys who can’t get it done. Loser is outta the UFC for good.
I’d like to see Frank Mir take on Roy Nelson. It would be a great test for both men. Roy Nelson already beat Mir in a grappling contest and we’ve already seen how Mir curls up into a ball when he gets hit hard. It would be Nelson’s win to date and with another win would probably be in line for a title shot. If Mir could beat Nelson it would be a great way to start his come back and work his way up to that third fight with Lesnar.
Also, I would love to see that Nogueira vs Cro Cop match.
