Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber and WEC 48 Hangover

Kickass_medium

(This about sums up what happens...)

Some thoughts while I recover from my WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber hangover...

- Around 2 o'clock yesterday I began pondering Urijah Faber's odds. Faber was at +285 and I began to wonder if it represented a smart value bet. I ended up shying away from the bet as I felt Aldo was the better the fighter but holy 13th century massacres! Aldo went Cannae on Faber's ass.

- There's a reason why I talked up Jose Aldo on KSK's podcast and now you know why.

- The city of Sacramento held their first and probably last "Urijah Faber Day".

- You have to wonder why Faber's corner didn't protect his long-term health and throw in the towel. After the third round Urijah was on one leg and each time Aldo threw a kick Faber would twirl like a ballerina in an attempt to lessen the force of the impact. Faber's corner even had to pick him up and carry him back to the corner between rounds four and five. At some point you have to ask why they didn't say "Enough is enough. I want you to be able to walk when your fifty".

- Jose Aldo is a Velociraptor

- Will there be any residual effects from selling the fight as an "Urijah Faber" event for fans only to see  him get his ass kicked worse than NBC's primetime schedule (zing!).

- Ben Henderson's "Jesus Powers" continue in full force as he smoked Donald Cerrone in under two minutes. For a rematch of a fight that was a controversial five round decision it was surprisingly anti-climatic.

- Where the hell was the WEC logo? Zuffa blocked it out from the cage, gloves, commercials for upcoming events and simply ignored the promotions name. Surprisingly it was still on the championship belts and the ring girls uniforms, though Chandella Powell pulled duty with Brittney Palmer.

- This new promotion Aldo Faver FC is pretty sweet!

- Mike Brown was knocked out by Manny Gamburyan. For those not familiar with "Manvil" his punching prowess was thought to be the equivalent of a feather pillow hitting a mattress as oppose to hammer striking an anvil. Manny will most likely fight for the featherweight title next.

- Manny Gamburyan will inject geopolitics into your MMA!

Manny, a native Armenian, brought up the Armenian Genocide that took place during WWI in his post-fight interview. For those not familiar with the politics surrounding the event the Turks (a longstanding U.S. ally) are not exactly thrilled with being labeled the perpetrators of a genocide (would you really want foreigners calling U.S. manifest destiny the Native American Genocide?), though they acknowledge the fact that a lot of Armenians died during the war. Turkey, the lone moderate, secular Muslim democracy, is also trying to join the EU much to the chagrin of come EU countries and the French recently officially recognized the genocide.

There's your International politics crash course. Your term papers are due on Wednesday by 5pm ET.

- Anthony Njokuani doesn't have much of a ground game as the feared striker was smoked on the ground by Shane Roller. However, I would still love to see Cerrone vs. Njokuani II.

- Scott Jorgensen avenged a loss to Antonio Banuelos who came into the cage sporting a Danny Trejo from Machete look. Jorgensen's win sets up a potential interim title fight with Joseph Benavidez at 135 lbs.

- The Zombies are coming!

Leonard Garcia won his fight against the atmosphere as 95.98777777% of his punches failed to find the flesh of Chan Sung Jung aka "The Korean Zombie". Jung won was screwed over by judges who were fooled into thinking that the fight was between Garcia and the Oxygen molecules.

Still, it was an EXTREMELY entertaining bout that instantly vaults up into the top-ten of must see fights for new fans. Many are saying this is the WEC's version of Griffin-Bonnar and I would agree except I thought this promotion was Aldo-Faber Cagefighting.

- Chad Mendes defeated Anthony Morrison and is now 2-0 in the WEC. Mendes is the prospect to watch at 145lbs.

Obviously the judges and every other blog agree ….se BE and CP and FL and MMAweekly etc etc

and I come back just as easily and quote MMA Junkie, Sherdog, Fight Metric and others who scored it for Jung.

The fight was close and people will clearly disagree. Garcia was backing away, hitting air and taking more damage and punches.

Something being close doesn’t mean that injustice wasn’t done.

Garcia also landed alot of heavy punches and did plenty of damage himself, people need to re-watch the fight asap. I just did without the volume and almost went frame by frame and Garcia barely pulled it out, the was no robbery here.

No chance garcia pulled it out. He was hittiing nothing with his power shots and had his back against the cage

Using the criteria for victory. Aggresion striking and octagon control. Jung clearly won the fight

Great point

You have to wonder why Faber’s corner didn’t protect his long-term health and throw in the towel. After the third round Urijah was on one leg and each time Aldo threw a kick Faber would twirl like a ballerina in an attempt to lessen the force of the impact. Faber’s corner even had to pick him up and carry him back to the corner between rounds four and five. At some point you have to ask why they didn’t say “Enough is enough. I want you to be able to walk when your fifty”.

Why do fighters do this? Back in PRIDE and even back in the day in the UFC it was pretty commonplace to see a severely overmatched fighter throw in the towel. The only recent fight I can think of where one competitor chose to end the fight was BJ v. GSP II. Do I just not watch enough fights? If I’m right, why is this the case? Fighters trying to chase FOTN bonuses? Machismo/bravado? Not wanting to anger Dana? It’s ridiculous and needs to stop. Quitting at this level isn’t a sign of cowardice, it is a sign of respect. If Starnes had thrown in the towel, how much less backlash would he have had? My guess would be considerably less, and he could have saved face by saying he recognised how overmatched he was and on top of that he sustained an injury, and praise Quarry on his win.
