Sacramento Newspaper Writer wants Urijah Faber to Retire!
Now that Sacramento witnessed it's Sonny Corleone beat-down of Urijah Faber Victor Contreras of the Sacramento Bee would like Urijah to head to the retirement home for a nice game of Wii bowling instead of being a fighter. This deserves some special WKR love:
The World Extreme Cagefighting circuit would not be what it is today without Urijah Faber.
True.
Not only was Faber its most popular and recognizable champion, he was a spokesman and goodwill embassador for the emerging WEC.
He knows there's a "three year plan", right?
Without Faber, the WEC would not have had its first pay-per-view event Saturday night at Arco Arena.
True.
Without Faber, the WEC still would be in the shadows of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Sorry to break it to you but it is in the shadow.
Without Faber, WEC fighters would not make the money they do in and out of the ring.
If "making money" means making peanuts then you are correct good sir.
But featherweight champion José Aldo delivered a message to Faber - through numerous, painful leg whips - that should have come through loud and clear:
Retire. Retire now, not after another loss in which you're cheered entering the octagon and booed leaving it.
And this is where it becomes a complete overreaction. Faber can still beat a whole lot of 145lbs. fighters and can even drop down to 135lbs.if need be. The former champ still draws well and he is only 30 years old. There's still plenty of time left in Urijah Faber's career.
Faber couldn't beat Aldo on Saturday night or any other day of the week. No shame in that.
Aldo is a young, powerful kid. He didn't even use most of his aggressive arsenal against a foe he truly respected.
That's because Aldoraptor was already eating on the living flesh of Urijah Faber.
Faber has made Sacramento proud, restoring pride to a once-great fighting city. He's a true warrior who has survived many battles.
Why risk tarnishing that image or risk the chance of injury?
See, this is where he has a point. Why in god's name didn't Faber's corner stop the fight when it became apparent he couldn't walk? You know, that whole needing to be able to move is kind of important to this cage fighting thingy we call MMA. That would be an argument that people could get behind.
Take a bow, Urijah.
But there's still time for many more encores (just not title fights).

nice to see that mma fans are not the only fickle ones out there
non combat fans have no frame of reference in how to view fighters, they are either invincible or they are losers.
in stick and ball sports wins and losses don’t matter as much when you really get down to it, thanks to pre season games and playoffs, but in combat sports every win and loss matters.
that being said, faber should look into giving 135 a try, losing to the last two champs and being in brutal 5 round wars are going to take their toll.
Hey
Stick with the man when he’s down.
Sheesh.
That’s like telling a policeman to quit his job if he lets a crook get away.
