WEC 48 Matchmaking Aftermath

There are a lot of possibilities for future matches in the exciting new "Aldo Faber" promotion thanks in part to the potentially lucrative pay-per view event. Here are a couple of obvious matches:

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Manny Gamburyan
"Manvil" steps in as the default challenger at 145lbs. That's alright though, Aldoraptor is need of some exotic food and nothing is more exotic than Armenian cooking.

Champ Ben Henderson vs. Shane Roller
Pre-WEC 48 rumor had it that the winner of the Roller-Njokuani fight would be next in line for a title shot. Well, Roller flew through Anthony and Henderson flew through Cerrone so a match-up between these two canvas falcons seems appropriate.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Njokuani
WKR strongly believes that Versus and WEC were cheerleading for this fight to happen. While it may not occur with championship gold on the line the WEC can still make it an attractive co-main event for a Versus card.

Scott Jorgensen vs. Champ Dominick Cruz
Reed Harris said he would rather see Jorgensen fight for the bantamweight title next but Cruz's injured hand may force the WEC to go to plan B.

Plan B: Scott Jorgensen vs. Joseph Benavidez for interim title
If Cruz's injury forces him to ride the pine for an extending period of time the WEC has to book this fight, no?

Urijah Faber vs. Miguel Torres
The WEC mega fight that never was can now be a real possibility as Faber may be dropping to 135lbs. and Torres' star may be one flaring loss to an unknown from completely extinguishing. Seems appropriate to cash on the fans desire to see the fight. Too bad it will no longer be mega. More medium sized.

Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown the Trilogy!
Both are coming off of disappointing losses and there is still a desire to see how Faber will fight without broken hands for twenty-five minutes. Besides, it would be a good way to (a) get Brown back into 145lbs. contention or (b) keep Faber as a top challenger in that division for a while longer.

Zombie $lugfest Part Deux
This is a no brainer (ha, no brainer) but you can bet that Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung II will be booked as soon as each side recovers from the mauling.

Holy Horrible matchmaking!

WEC will wait to see how the Varner fight plays out. If he wins he gets Henderson, if he loses they could match him up with Cerrone. Roller lost convincingly once to Henderson and Benson has said he has no desire to rehash that match.

Njokuani vs. Cowboy makes a little sense if Varner ends up getting Benson. But this is also a rehash of a previous fight that probably goes much the same way it did the first time.

I know Harris prefers Jorgenson vs. Cruz, but it’s a slap in the face of Benvidez who is more deserving of the shot. At this point I like Jorgenson vs. Benvidez more than either of those guys against Cruz. But due to lack of depth I’m sure they will hold off on matching Jorgenson vs. Benvidez if they can.

Koren Zombie desreves to be matched up as if he won his fight.

If anything your post brings to light the WEC’s biggest issues…lack of depth. We see far too many rematches.

Does anyone have any idea why Zuffa did not bring in Kid Yamamoto? They were courting him very hard at one point. Is he still FEG’s property on loan to Strikeforce? So he can fill their unaired prelims? Geezus and people wonder why Strikeforce is so second rate, bush league.

I think Cruz is going to be sidelined a while and they are going to have to pull an interim title

I think this is a better main event/fight then Ratcliff-Cerrone

Finally if Henderson doesn’t want any rematches then he’s boned because if Varner wins then there is no one for him to fight!

For some reason Aldoraptor made me laugh.

benavidez lost a close decision to Cruz….i doubt that Benavidez wins it over 5 rds though. odd now that faber will drop to 135 possibly….b/c he holds a win over Cruz at 145…..i’m just ill that in 6 mnths i’ll be watching faber likely fight for the 135 strap. it’s like, gdamn, how many times i gotta watch that guy get shots at the strap?
