Vince McMahon and the WWE Lobbying for MMA Bans in Europe?

Dana-white-vince-mcmahon_medium
(We really are just Warhammer table top pawns to these guys *sigh*)

Really that headline should have read "Vince McMahon and the WWE lobbying for *****UFC***** bans in Europe?".

Cage Side Seats brings us this exchange from the Wrestling Observer as German sportscaster, Oliver Copp, insinuates that the WWE is pushing, lobbying, clamoring, "actively trying to get UFC banned".

Unless UFC manage to pack a stadium they go into, it'll be a negative for the brand's development. WWE, for instance, is only waiting for a high-profile failure like that to try and mock the UFC. They're already actively trying to get UFC banned in many European countries. Don't give them ammunition.

Dave Meltzer responds:

Well, I guess that cat is out of the bag.

Yeah, very scared of what happened in the U.S., and more particularly Canada, would happen in Europe.

But Oliver would know better, my impression is it's whispering behind the scenes about violence and brutality not being suitable for television, not inability to draw.

Oliver proceeded to add more to his original post, which you can read at Cage Side Seats.

Two things jump out from this exchange. First, are the roots of the German television ban of MMA UFC traceable back to Vince and the WWE? That may be a little too conspiracy theory for some people but the question writes itself after the juxtaposition of this fact coming to light and the recent, out of the blue ban.

Second, the UFC and the WWE are in competition, at least in the sense of what Meltzer stated. The WWE's European pay-per view market would take a hit if UFC expansion was successful. Of course, the implication is that the rise in the UFC's popularity coupled with the decline in the WWE's (or at least in pay-per view buy rates) opens the door for the conclusion that UFC fans are professional wrestling converts.

I used to cover pro-wrestling in my younger days, writing for some early sites and “dirt sheets.” One thing I discovered during that time was that Vince McMahon is one of the lowest, most corrupt, and detestable human beings alive. This doesn’t surprise me at all considering the lows this horrible man has stooped in the name of competition. The guy, and his wife and daughter are all pieces of shit who’ve created a venerable “cult” around shitty TV shows.

I just hope Dana White picks up on this and makes it a point to go after McMahon. Someone has to.

Personally, I’m sick of waiting for him to die from all the cocaine and steroids he’s been doing for forty years.

LOL, Dana has patterned his whole business model after the WWE and considers Vince a mentor. I am sure he is not just sitting around w/an “ah shucks” look on his face while the evil overlord Vince takes his European lunch money.

I can't be the only one who wants you to elaborate...

I missed the height of wrasslin’ so I have no idea what type of person McMahon is

The WWE should worry less about losing their European PPV buys to UFC and focus on putting together a more entertaining PG-13 rated show. MMA owns the 18-35 male demographic and while wrestling has an older audience, their current product is very much for the under 18 crowd. Rather than spending time/money (?) on getting UFC banned in Europe (highly unlikely), they should adjust their shows to attract the older/casual audience back.
It also doesn’t help they raised their usually sub-par PPVs to $45 (and $55 for Wrestlemania) this year.

this is just business and i'd expect nothing less from vince.

wwe dominates the cable ratings and ufc dominates the ppv buys, somethings gotta give and this is just the first battle in hopefully an entertaining war…
