Australia: A Haven for MMA Outcasts?

Australia_medium
(Paul Daley vs. a Kangaroo! Gary Shaw, make it happen!)

For those that don't know Australia was founded as a penal colony. Well, it looks like the Australian MMA scene is living up to their historical heritage as both the sucker punching Paul Daley and pain popping Karo Parisyan are headed 'Down Under'.

Karo --who took a pass on Strikeforce-- will fight at Impact FC on July 10. Paul Daley has signed on to fight with Impact FC but technically he will fight in New Zealand...

Impact FC will also put on a fight between Ken Shamrock and Pedro Rizzo.

Looks like UFC 110 really did set off a MMA "bomb" in Australia...

Update: Oh yeah, Josh Barnett is also fighting in Anzac land.

I really just don’t know why Strikeforce didn’t pick up Daley. Seemed like a no brainer to me.The dude is at the top of the division. Karo I can understand, he is kind of a flake as of late.

Top of what division?

by Bob Boblaw on May 14, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The welterweigh division. I mean he just got done fighting a match where the winner would fight the champ. So that puts him at the top end of the division.

I wouldn't go that far, Dana did say he would get the titile shot but that was

just because GSP had beaten everyone else and Dana doesn’t like rematches any more. I mean beating Martin Kampmann and McLovin is cool and all but it hardly puts you at the top of the UFC WW division. I really think it was more politics, Dana seems to really want a British fighter to have a belt if you ask me.

He is arguably one of the top two strikers at WW, and just got out grappled by arguably one of the top 2 grapplers at WW

I would say he’s in the top end of the division… probably #7 or so. Which is higher than anyone on SF’s roster, save Shields if he returns to WW and/or SF even.

Top end should probably translate to the top 5 fighters to say the least. Daley will never be top 5. The lack of competition outside the UFC is not going to motivate him to improve the ground game needs.

by Bob Boblaw on May 14, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

How many pro MMA fighters are there? How many are WW?

Hundreds? Thousands? I think anyone in the top 25 is “top end”, and he is certainly top 10. Whether or not fighting outside the UFC will improve his ground game, that doesn’t change the fact that as of right now he is a top 10 WW, and SF needs to build depth/grow their talent pool, which adding Daley would most certainly do. I don’t really understand where the argument is coming from lol

If nothing else they could eventually match Daley up with Woodley, and once he inevitably gets TKO’d in rd 1 they could say Woodley > Koscheck.

But then again this is 2010 and the SF braintrust is no longer beyond question, them not picking up Daley doesn’t surprise me. But damn would Daley vs Diaz have been fireworks. Who talks more shit/throws more fists than these two?

I’m just not impressed with Daley he beat Kampman (after a long layoff wasn’t it? I can’t remember) finished a guy that is infamous for his lack of standup. I think his misplaced value was a direct result of the marketing machine that is the UFC hype train.

by Bob Boblaw on May 14, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Who do you think would beat Daley at WW?

more than 9 people? Out of all the welterweights that BE ranks I can only pick like maybe 8 or so that I think could consistently beat Daley (as in win 6+/10).

Those are:

  • GSP (1)
  • Fitch (2)
  • Kos (4)
  • Shields (15, but only cause he hasn’t fought at WW in a year)

Those are the guys I would pick over Daley hands down. All the other top 10 guys I would say Daley has a good if not great chance to beat.

Those are:

  • Alves (3)
  • Thiago (5)
  • Diaz (6)
  • Hardy (7)
  • Hughes (9)
  • Kampmann (10)

You could make the case for a guy like Pierce due to his strong wrestling, and Johnson due to his sheer size and power, but imo (and that’s all this is, my subjective opinion), there are only a handful of fighters that are head and shoulders better than Daley, and none of them are better strikers. I’d like to hear who you think Daley would lose to, since you don’t think he’s a “top end” guy.

Since Daley will more than likely never fight any of the guys listed above I guess it doesn’t really matter. Just different opinions is all. I see your point and you make a good one I wasn’t trying to ruffle any feathers or step on any toes sorry if I came off like a dick was not my intentions.

no ruffled feathers

I came off as more of a dick I’m sure, but I honestly did want to hear who you think Daley would lose to/why he lose to them. I think he’s top 10, and since when has matching up two top 10 fighters (Diaz and Daley in this instance) who are two of the best strikers ever been a bad thing, was the point I was trying to make. Bad move on SF’s part, imo.

The sad part is that the same reason Daley is looking at other promotions is why he won’t fight Diaz. Two post fight brawlers coheadlining/headlining a fight would make Dana salivate. Daley may be to tainted for Strikeforce and DREAM probably is a big paycut so I think he’s doing what is smart new promotion willing to pay more than they should.

regardless Daley is an idiot, didn’t he do something rude after the Hazelett fight also?

Getting your ass kicked for five rounds and offering no offense, the only thing people compliment you on is that you didn’t tap does not make you a world beater. Mike Swick vs Hardy went to decision split decision, in your line of logic where does that place Hardy?

by Bob Boblaw on May 15, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You ever heard that a good defense is the best offense? Thats pretty much what you gotta do in a GSP fight. The fact that he lasted 5 rounds with argueably one of the best P4P fighters should speak volumes about his skill level.
If going 5 rounds with GSP does not make you one of the top fighters in mma, then I would like to know what other qualifications are required.
With that being said, I do agree with your point that he did not do much as far as actual offense. And I also realize that this entire comment was a contradiction of itself, but that’s why you love me.
