Alistair Overeem may have won but this story is only 1/3 complete

So that's what a "reeming" looks like Photo by Esther Lin

Alistair Overeem's "reeming" of Brett Rogers instantly revitalized his stock as a top-ten heavyweight but Overeem's performance was really only one third of a developing story. The other two parts of this absinthe martini need a few weeks to ripen before we can get sloppy drunk.

Test Results

We don't know if the Missouri Athletic Commission tested Overeem but Strikeforce decided to implement their own tests. Now we have to wait and see what the results are. It should be said that many have already convicted Alistair of wrong doing. Thus it's highly unlikely that a negative test will dissuade the detractors. Still, for Overeem he would have some proof of innocence to point to and that can't be said for other fighters who actually tested positive for steroids, e.g., Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, Nate Marquardt, Sean Sherk, Stephan Bonnar, Chris Leben and many more.

Fedor, Oh Fedor!

The immediate talking point after Saturday was a potential fight between Overeem and Fedor if the Russian defeats Fabricio Werdum in June. Overeem called out Fedor like any fighter should in this situation and if we lived in a perfect world that fight would make complete sense. Too bad we live in a crazy world which puts us right in M-1's roundhouse.

Star-divide

Even Scott Coker attempted to throw a little managerial water on the prospect of a potential fight:

"To be very honest, the situation is Fedor's fighting on June 26," Coker said. "Alistair has told me he'd love to fight Fedor. But that's going to be something, if he wins, that we sit down with M-1 Global [Emelianenko's team] after June 26. You can't count Fabricio out. The timing could be right for him."

Also, D.W. of Head Kick Legend mentioned some of the difficulties between the two camps on today's podcast. For those that can't listen let's just say that M-1 and Bas Boon (Overeem's manger) aren't exactly capable of getting along and playing nice. Put it this way, Vadim Finkelstein said that Fedor wouldn't fight Overeem because he's a "steroid bully" but they were completely fine with fighting Josh Barnett whose pissed hot multiple times. How does that make any sense? It doesn't. But it does give us a glimpse into the chasm between the two camps.

This is one reason why I am glad the UFC knows how to run a company. They don’t let the fighters run the orginization.
Fedor and M-1 pretty much gets to say when he does and does not fight. They have Strikeforce by the balls and they know it. No one fighter should have more power than the company does.
I can see Coker behind the scenes saying “Please Fedor, will you fight Overeem. Please!” You don’t hear this happening too often in the UFC. They make the matches we want to see for the most part.
As a fight fan, I see Fedor and M-1 as the equivalent of boxing. He is the Floyd Mayweather of mma. It is like a greek tragedy. The man who is supposed to be the best thing in mma is also the thread on the sweater you don’t want to pull cuz it could all come apart.

My father wrote about this in his book. Chapter 1... Page 1... Paragraph 1: What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions?... Money

Finkelstein & Co. clearly have no idea how transparent they are. I don’t think anyone ever doubts Fedor’s honesty, but every time M-1 opens their mouths there is a universal “yeah, right” reaction.

For all the s*** one can throw at the UFC, you’re right, we don’t get these games which make the promotion look amateurish and not in control.

I love the analogy Otis, perfect.

Scoozna, you too. You guys get it. M-1 Global’s ONLY assett is Fedor, and more specific, His record and moniker as the worlds baddast man. M-1 will not sign for a Overeem fight. I dont believe it for a second. After, his fight with Werdum, I would expect to see Fedor fight Barnett or someone else, that makes no sense.

If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?

Here we go again!

Fedor hasn’t even stepped in the ring yet to face Werdum and M1 already has all they need to start more renegotiations. If Fedor wins and M1 forces Strikeforce to renegotiate a new contract and delays a fight with Overeem it will be beyond a joke. What athlete in any sport get to renegotiate after every performance?

If Overeem really wants to prove he is the top MMA heavyweight then he should give the Fedor fight a chance and if it stalls go to the UFC the first chance he gets. He won’t be able to do Dream and K1 if he did that but he’ll get as many top level MMA fights with big paydays as he is physically able to do in a year.

A negative test only shows how much of a joke the whole testing process is.
