Nobody wants Roger Huerta

Roger_medium

Quoteworthy:

"We had a conversation about Roger Huerta (currently under contract with Bellator) fighting for us, but the terms and conditions weren't something that was attractive to us, so we passed. But we've had some good conversations with Bellator and the door's open for anybody."

This little gem was pointed out by Fightlinker and it highlights the precipitous fall of Huerta. While Ryan Harkness speculates that this may be in part of Bellator looking to unload a part of their financial obligations (Huerta was rumored to receive a $250,000 signing bonus) it might also be a sincere attempt to build "El Matador" back up. A fight with Josh Thomson would certainly help Huerta's stock but as Strikeforce said, "thanks, but no thanks" it appears that Bellator might be in a box.

WKR still believes the best fight Bellator could make for Huerta is a fight with Jorge Masvidal. It would take some work, as Jorge and Bellator aren't best buds but it could be a strong first step in rebooting the Huerta brand.

This a problem alot of mma fighters have. Its overestimating their worth. MMA is alot like the new york stock exchange. A fighter’s worth can skyrocket and plummet with one fight.
One fighter who is at the top of the food chain in dollar value, is Fedor. But sadly as soon as he looses that 1 fight, his stock is going to drop dramatically. I promise you, UFC is not going to offer as much for a Fedor that has been beaten.
Another example is Dan Henderson. He was on top of his game after the Bisping fight, but look at him now after one loss. Still an asset, but not as lucrative as one.
Same with Huerta. He overestimated his worth, now he is in a bind.

My father wrote about this in his book. Chapter 1... Page 1... Paragraph 1: What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions?... Money

Good decision by strikeforce.

If they want to stay profitable they simply can’t afford to take every fighter that’s looking for more paydays. Like karo, Roger needs to realize where he stands as far as promoters are concerned. They are way too expensive (or flaky in karos case) for what Little they have accomplished In Their respective careers. Strikeforce saw what bellator paid and what they got in return for huerta and made the right call I think.

I do not understand WKR’s fixation with Masvidal. He is one judge’s score away from being 2-3 in his last five fights, not exactly someone you could use to rebuild the reputation of your top face.

Why not look to Japan for 155 talent to face Huerta? JZ anyone?

I would say that Bellator has 4 name LW’s

Alvarez, Imada, Huerta and sort of Masvidal.

Imada is still tied up in the tourney as is Alvarez. So how do you build back Huerta?

Jorge has a name in part due to how he lost to Imada and is considered to be a solid lightweight (he was favored to meet Alvarez in the first tourney finals) so a win there for Huerta would help. Plus making that fight insulates Bellator from some risk as a win for Masvidal means they can put him in a rematch with Imada.

It just seems the most appropriate response given the situation.

I mean, would a fight with Ricci or Vanier go a long way in rebuilding your confidence regarding Roger?

Even though Bellator has been freezing him out, once Masvidal fights, win or lose, he’s gone. So there is a potential risk of burying Huerta even farther should he lose and losing the guy that beat him. Not good in any aspect for Bellator.

Also, I’m not sure if you are aware. but Masvidal’s lost again since the loss to Imada. And like I said before he was a judge’s scorecard away from an additional loss. It would almost make more sense to match Huerta up with “Baboon” the guy that most recently beat Masvidal.

There is nearly zero value in having Masvidal fight for Bellator ever again. He wants out and you can’t risk your baby face.

Oh I know that he lost

http://www.watchkalibrun.com/2010/2/5/1297112/upset-alert-jorge-masvidal-loses

and I know that there’s a freeze out.

But I talked to Jorge and he said he would love to fight Huerta. If Bellator can make that relationship work, and I think there’s good reason to try to, then I think it’s one of, if not the best options available

Jorge vs Roger in Miami would be insane.

Hope Roger can rebound. I like watching him fight. He brings it every night. Masvidal would be a bad matchup for him though.
