Rampage vs. Rashad and UFC 114 Hangover
Some thoughts while I recover from my hangover...
- Rampage Jackson was slow with no discernible gameplan while Rashad Evans was the exact opposite. Those "seven and half minute miles" really did wonders. Nice job Wolfslair, you've potentially ruined a perfectly good fighter. Granted they got help from Hollywood...
- Rashad Evans now has two wins where he was almost knocked out in the final frame. A troubling trend made all the worse by the fact that they were against opponents who were nowhere near peek condition. Thiago Silva had the back injury heading into UFC 108 (he went in for surgery after the fight) and Rampage had the too much biscuits and gravy injury heading into UFC 114. Not a good sign for Rashad's future fight with Shogun.
- Michael Bisping defeated Dan Miller *yawn*. Seriously, Miller was out boxed by Demian Maia so it wasn't hard to envision a similar scenario against "The Count". Unfortunately now we have to listen to Bisping talk about how he should be in line for a title shot *sigh*.
- Yeah, the judges gave Rogerio Nogueira a gift but you know what? I am sort of cool with it. Rogerio will get to fight Forrest Griffin *fingers crossed* and Brilz still gets the marketing bump from almost winning an upset. That seems to be a win for everyone involved. Well, except Forrest...
- So, will Jason Brilz be the next Sokoudjou? In fairness to Rameau he also beat Ricardo Arona when he was still good...
- Duffman was just knocked out -- Oh yeah!
- Wow, how prescient was Todd Duffee's pre-fight interviews? Duffee came off as a curmudgeon complaining of being over-hyped and that Russow was a solid opponent. Well after three rounds of a Dufftastic ass kicking Russow landed one big punch and KO'd Todd. I guess we no longer need to call it the Hail Mary. Hello, Hail Russow.
- Something no one has really pointed out was that Duffee was knocked cold by how he hit the canvas, which looked like a passenger in a car not wearing a seat belt after running into a wall. Can you say whiplash?
- Diego Sanchez enjoyed the ability to eat solid food again and then was promptly defeated by a UFC newcomer. Does this mean back to lightweight? Maybe Diego should have a taken that fight with Kenny Florian after all...
- Set your Dong to Stung! Dong Hyun Kim put an old school grapple beat down on a one-dimensional fighter.
- So, apparently Amir Sadollah spent uber amounts of time training his Muay Thai. He knew he was fighting a grappler, right?
- Whad'ya know? Joe Lauzon was right, his brother, Dan, wasn't in shape...
- Luiz Cane was Cyrille smacked back to peg one.
- Melvin Guillard is winning again? Hmmm, when will the spectacular flame out occur? Probably in that Joe Stevenson Jeremy Stephens fight that Guillard asked for.

To be fair
He asked for Jeremy Stephenson, so both of you are sort of right…

I don't think it's a ppv material at all
One thing that I don’t like with a UFC fight is if they do too much trash talk but on the real fight, there’s no one being knocked out. Reactions. http://j.mp/rashad-rampage-fail-or-not

Ugh
I was pretty mad at the main event last night. Too much tequila was partially to blame. Wanting Rampage to win was partially to blame. I was frustrated by the excessive leaning on the cage. When Couture does it (at least before he got too old) he would dirty box and try to setup for a Greco throw. I felt like I was watching a heavyweight boxing match where the fat guy was leaning on the fatter guy and throwing a punch occassionally. I guess it was a good, low risk, game plan. Overall it was a good card. I really think Rampage needs to decide if he wants to be a serious fighter and if he does, he needs to join a real fight camp. One where the fighters get dental attention and the coaches don’t give a crap that he is Rampage and they work him hard and make him learn new techniques and formulate a gameplan. It’s too bad his camps are never top notch. It was amazing watching the Primetime show. Rampage was training with the top contenders and other talent in multiple weightclasses (the jackson crew you know) and Rampage was training with some toolboxes. Sigh..

Agreed
Dude was 3-0 in the UFC heading into that fight, with wins over Tom Egan, Rick Story and Paul Taylor.
New to North American audiences, new to the main card, but not new to the UFC.

Biping has better defensive wrestling and all aroud mobility than Rampage
Rampages flaw has been the one that has plagued his career from jump. Dude just doesn’t take his training as seriously as he should and gets by on talent
He would benefit from joining a super camp, but he probably wouldn’t like trainers who were super demanding and didn’t care that he is Rampage Jackson, he would be pushed to work and given tough sparring partners and his superstar (i.e. unstable) mentality would not preform well under those circumstances.

I still bet amazed how people continue to ignore the way Rashad dictates and control’s mostly the entire fight against Thiago and Rampage. Yet all that some people talk about is what could have happened, the fact is both guys got worn down and worked by Rashad they had nothing left by the end. Rashad won both fights handily and will do the same to Shogun, I wonder when he regains the belt will people finall acknowledge him or make more excuses.
I think part of that is because Rashad appeared close to being knocked out in each fight in the third round.
To a lot of people that opens the door for “what ifs”
Like “what if Thiago Silva’s back wasn’t fucked before the fight?”
“What if Rampage hadn’t decided to go to an all you can eat buffet before the fight?”

yup
A lot of fighters have to work on getting started sooner. Griffin has had this issue…
But I think Rashad needs to get his head into concentrating more in the latter parts of the fight. He looked flawless in both fights until the third round. It’s like he knew it was won already and relaxed or sumtin
either way, it makes me give him MORE credibility. After Machida, we all wondered about that chin. But He got CRACKED hard in both his last fights and survived. That’s killer instinct and ability to recover
