Post-UFC 114: random mumblings on the event, the fighters and the future.
UFC 114 main event could be described in one word: 'meh'. The intense rivalry between 'Suga' Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson didn't quite live up to the pre-hype of one fighter getting KOTFO, nevertheless, it was still an entertaining bout with moments of excitments.
Heres a quick list of my very own 'what next' for some of the fighters on last night's fight card (not all of them, because I can't be bothered) - just remember to take my words with a bit of salt.
Melvin Guillard: Everyone knew he always had athleticism. And talent. Everyone also suspected that his often dubious fight strategies have also improved under Greg Jackson. So why was he fighting Waylon Lowe? WHO IS Waylon Lowe? I couldn't even Wikipedia him because he doesn't even have a page. At the end of the day, 'The Young Assassin' should have been fighting a better established, well known fighter. However, not all is lost: if Joe Silva grants his wish, we could witness an entertaining bout between Guillard and Jeremy Stephens in the near future.
Dong Hyun Kim: STUNGUN! I was extremely impressed with Kim's performance, except the final 1 minute or so, when he gassed out and got tagged with some shots. Still, the Korean grinded out a victory over a popular, but average fighter in Sadollah (lets face it, Sadollah will never be a world-beater). This, coupled with an undefeated record, and his stock continues to rise.
Next for Kim? I'd like to see him fight another 'big' name, and Diego Sanchez springs to mind. Sanchez beat Karo Parysian, who barely got the nod over Kim before it was discovered that he was high on drugs. If Joe Silva sets it up, we could get a ménage-à-trois à la Marquez-Maia-Sonnen, on a smaller, less significant scale.
Diego Sanchez: History showed that Sanchez always had trouble against bigger opponents who could impose their strength and power over him, and his match against Hathaway proved no different. Sanchez is now stuck in a dilemna. With his re-debut at welterweight foiled, and Dana White himself saying that he preferred to see Sanchez at 155, what should the Strange One do? It could just be that he had an 'off' night, certainly the intensity and tenacity that he displayed in the Clay Guida and previous matches were non-existent yesterday. Maybe he should stay at welterweight for one more match, to see how he copes in the division. YES!
TODDUFFEE: What can I say? Impressive first round, started to gas second round, knocked out in the third. His KO over Tim Hague becomes less impressive considering Hague's abysmal UFC record. However, whilst Russow has totally de-railed the hype train, I admit I won't be clambering off just yet - The Duffman is young, he will learn from this loss, and he will be back. OOOOOH YEAH!
Mike Russow: My theory is that Duffee removed so many of Russow's brain cells in round one, that his brain wasn't actually capable of shutting off. Nevertheless, credit must be given to Russow, who is probably in the hospital getting treated for a concussion, as well as severe shock. On a more serious note, what next for Russow? After finishing a prospect in Todd Duffee, I would love to see him fight a more experienced fighter. A match with 'Big' Ben Rothwell would seem likely, no?
Rashad Evans: Suga...you talked the talk (badly), but at the end of the day, you walked the walk. The stanky leg walk. It seems that in almost every one of Evan's fights, he will at some point get wobbled. I guess its a testament to Rashad's skill and conditioning that despite being put in a dangerous position by Rampage, Thiago Silva, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin, only one of those men have been able to finish him off. That being said, his wrestling looked sharp and explosive yesterday, and prior to getting wobbled, his striking looked improved and more accurate. However, this will mean nothing against Shogun, who will probably decapitate his head when they meet.
Annnnnd that is all for today. I might add my comments on the other fighters if I have time, but it is likely that UFC 242 would have gone and passed by then. Peace out.
