Jon Jones vs. Nogueira? Michael David Smith thinks so

Jonesbonnar3809ufc94_medium

With Forrest Griffin's injury/withdrawal from UFC 114 Michael David Smith of MMA Fighting poses an crazy interesting solution -- have Jon Jones step in to fight Rogerio Nogueira.

First, let's just point out that it will never happen, there simply isn't enough time for Jones to step in and fight a top-ten light heavyweight with crisp boxing and great Jiu-Jitsu, so this in an exercise in fantasy sport land just like that rumor that the Cardinals would trade Albert Pujols for Ryan Howard.

WKR typically agree with MDS, unless its about trying Tim Tebow as a safety (he would be a slow Roy Williams for crying out loud!) but we aren't sure if Smith's "potential star" argument holds up:

If Jones were to beat Nogueira, the UFC would have a bona fide superstar on its hands, a fighter who might even be ready to contend for the title, depending on how the Lyoto Machida-Shogun Rua and Rampage Jackson-Rashad Evans fights play out. Jones ought to be given the opportunity to prove himself against one of the very best light heavyweight.

First of all, is Rogerio Nogueira that big of a star? To the hardcore community, yes, but not to the casual fans who are needed to transform Jones from hot prospect into big time pay-per view draw and cultural touchstone. Besides, just because you defeat a fighter doesn't mean you absorb their popularity a la Mega Man or Highlander.

To that end, a tough, competitive fight with Nogueira, one that Jones could very well lose, would be a great match-up one that fight fans could appreciate. But for Zuffa, who is clearly building Jones for the long haul, it might be wiser to let Jon Jones build his highlight reel with a few more fights against mid-tier fighters like Vladimir Matyushenko, who Jones is slated to fight in Utah later this summer.

Update: Well, this discussion was rendered useless fairly quickly. Jason Brilz will fight Rogerio Nogueira instead.

Ugh, talk about dropping the ball in terms of match making. Win or lose, this fight does nothing for Lil Nog. With Bones, if Nog won he further establishes his name amongst casual fans. If Bones wins, he solidifies his hype and makes a nice case for a title shot.

Good luck selling this card to the masses, beacuse this change makes UFC 114 nearly irrelevant. Unfortunately, there’s not much chance this one gets broadcast free on Spike.

Now if they moved Cyril Diabate vs. Luis Cane to the main card, I’d reconsider, but at this point I’ll speak with my money and pass.

I feel sorry for those who booked their trip and bought tickets when they first went on sale. I seriously considered attending this card but had second thoughts and decided to wait for 116 instead.

Yeah I definitely got the short end of that stick.

the ufc light heavyweight division has become stale (same top fighters) and lil nog and bones both provide new (new to UFC) potential stars in the division, i bet they do not want them facing each other

laughabl

with match ups and rematches possible between. Rampage, machida, forrest, jon jones, shogun, rich franklin. Shogun, ryan bader, lil nog, thiago silva, anderson silva, chuck, jardine, vera, and randy

To say this division is stale is ridiculous

by jackmerridew on May 4, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, haha

LHW is the most stacked division in the UFC, what exactly do you mean its stale?

Unless you mean Stalin, but I don’t know why you would compare a fighting weight class to a horrible dictator.

Oh yeah, this is another example of why merging the WEC with UFC would be a smart business decision. We wouldn’t necessarily be graced with fights like Brilz vs. Lil Nog.

How’s Lil Nog’s wrestling? There is a very good chance Brilz can take him down and control him for a UD win, effectively killing any momentum Lil Nog might have started to generate. Very poor business decisions and matching on Zuffa’s part.

This card will sell because of Rampage vs. Rashad, so while Forrest being out of the card will hurt as long as the ME gets enough hype UFC 114 will do fine.

The fact is Jones was never going to take this fight that was fantasy talk, the best I was hoping for was maybe Jardine or Hamill but that apparently was also a long shot.

you want Jones/Hamill 2?

Hamill doesnt

I believe you are right, but these crap cards can not help the UFC in the long run. The UFC admittedly or not, is going the way of boxing cards. IE, Main Event followed by “filler” fights.

By the way, has Dana ever “made it up to us” fans like he promised for the debacle that was UFC 112?

alarmist talk now

Even without forrest. Ufc 114 is a solid solid card top to bottom.

Oh hai

Used to be on BE, ya’ll seem a lil closer to my mentality. Though I must warn you I arrive with a Sherdog blackbelt, which makes me dangerous in the world known as teh internetz.

Anyway, I bought tickets for UFC 114 WAY back when they first went on sale, and while I am dissapointed in the replacement of the co-main – (More or less for no other reason than I’m not too familiar with Brilz fights or his fighting style) – The rest of the card is actually quite dandy with several compelling match ups permeating the undercard.

For example, Tavares vs. Guillard is an incredible matchup. I feel as though it will be fast past with lots of stand up and scrambles. Guillard seems improved, but Tavares will definitely bring the fight to him. It’s a tough, competetive fight to call.

Example #2. The Stun Gun vs. Amir Sodollah should also be an entertaining scrap. I had the Pleasure of watching DHK hand Jason Tan his ass at UFC 84 ‘Ill Will’. With Amir’s propensity to utilize his Muay Thai, and DHK being the stellar judo player that he is, I am compelled.

Let’s not forget TODDDUFFEE is also on the card. I’m not too bummed, but I was looking forward to Griffin sprinting back to the locker room after being touched the jab.

Less Forrest fights are always better for me. I’m tired of UFC lining Forrest up against their top tier fighters so when he losses they have a built in excuse to keep promoting him like he’s relevant (in terms of a challenger).

by bignerd on May 5, 2010 1:05 AM EDT reply actions

um what?, have you seen Forrest fight because they don’t need any excuses to keep him relevant considering his track record. He already has wins over Shogun, Rampage and Tito and is a former LHW champion not to mention he’s very popular with the fans and always comes to fight seriously you couldn’t be more wrong.

by Nightwhistler on May 5, 2010 3:10 AM EDT reply actions

I’m still going to disagree. He beat a Shogun making his cage debut still rehabilitating from injury, I don’t think he’d come close to beating Shogun today.

Tito isn’t relevant. I watched that fight against Forrest, it was pathetic. Tito didn’t have much to offer, nor should any expect much from Tito with a disk fusion operation on his back . . . plus the whole cracked skull thing . . . LOL.

Rampage was a good win but that was years ago. In the meantime fighters have been stepping into the cage with Forrest knowing he’s not a threat to do much damage.

by bignerd on May 5, 2010 5:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to agree with you

I love Forrest but his strengths are probably outside the cage. He’s a great personality which is why the UFC wants to keep him relevant. I personally dont think he’s in the top 10 of 205ers, but he’s very down to earth and honest about everything.

he beat shogun, anything else that you say after that is irrelevant he got the win over shogun and rampage, 2 top 5 lhws. yes he got smoked by Jardine, Anderson and Rashad but hes a grinder and even the best fighters can have an off night and succumb to a fighter like forest’s game

although i think he loses to Lil Nog, i would still be interested in seeing him fight Randy, Thiago Silva, Rich Franklin, Jon Jones, Ryan Bader, even Chuck.

talk about off nights

did Forrest beat the best Rampage or best Shogun?
