Upset Special! Huerta beaten by Curran, Alvarez rolls past Neer

(That Bostonian get-up you got on there won't save you now Roger!)

Bellator XVII marked MMA's official debut in Boston, Massachusetts and the promotion packed their card with several big names and their first "super" fight.

Bellator Lightweight champion, and currently ranked as the #5 lightweight fighter according to SBN Consensus Rankings, Eddie Alvarez, fought welterweight, Josh Neer, in a 160lbs. non-title catch-weight bout. In this current era of MMA, observers tend to get a little nervous when talented fighters fight up in weight but Alvarez was never in danger as he exploited Neer's Achilles heel -- his takedown defense.

In the second round Eddie took Neer down, took back control and sunk in the rear-naked choke. While Josh refused to tap the referee stopped the bout. Alvarez will now wait to fight the winner of the season two lightweight tourney.

Speaking of said tournament, both semi-final bouts also took place tonight. The main focus will certainly fall on Roger Huerta who lost a narrow unanimous decision to Pat Curran in a huge upset (Huerta was -800).

Star-divide

"El Matador" entered Bellator a highly touted free agent, and was rumored to receive a significant signing bonus from the promotion, with the expectation that Roger would win the tournament and fight Eddie Alvarez in season three. However, the judges threw a monkey wrench in that plan as their unanimous 29-28 decision for Curran prevented Huerta from reaching the finals. Sort of like that Tekken movie being a direct to DVD release...

Pat Curran moves to the lightweight finals and will face Toby Imada who also won this evening, as he submitted Carey Varnie in the second round of their semi-final bout.

Finally, former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion, Cole Konrad won his Bellator debut over Pat Bennett.

my thoughts on this show…

1. I hate Comcast because thanks to them I missed the Imada fight, nice going jerks.

2. Lil’ Frog is going to be a star in a couple of years, Bellator better sign him up because Zuffa will look to scoop him up whenever his deal is up.

3. Huerta was exposed as far back as the Guida fight, he is overated and there is a reason why Zuffa didn’t want to overpay for him.

4. I’m done with Neer, there is also a reason why he isn’t in the UFC either it’s because he refuses to fight like a true mma fighter. He wants to stand and bang and was embarrased by Alvarez who while I think has holes in his game always uses all of his tools to win.

5. Konrad is a very raw prospect but if he is brought along slowly and can continue to train with Lesnar in a couple of years he could be a factor at HW.

I can’t understand how an “elite” athlete like Konrad can “look” so out of shape. It was embarassing to watch. He should really be wearing a sports bra or manzierre.
