How Much Did We Really Learn About Todd Duffee At UFC 114?

via ckfighter.unfilteredmma.com

Sure, we learned he can be KOed by a single punch from another heavyweight, but aside from that we got a glimpse into the potential of Duffee.  He's young and inexperienced at this level, but he's clearly got some issues to sort out.

How many times did he throw the left jab followed by the right uppercut? I stopped counting after the first round.  When Mike Goldberg picks up on it saying "man, he likes that uppercut", you should probably start switching it up.  I know he landed it a few times, but greater minds than you and I are going to plan around it and find a way to capitalize.

I was also sort of disturbed with Duffee's cardio dump from round 1 to round 2.  He looked like a completely different fighter the second round.  Constantly disengaging, taking a beat to breath, and getting back into his stance.  I guess he thought he could put Russow away early.

Find better cornermen.  Mike Whitehead?  The guy who told his fighter that all he needed to do was touch Russow and he'd go down?  After watching the first round from about three feet way?  I just hope Todd's next fight is in Canada or something.  That way Mike's parole officer can finally say he did something to benefit society.

Here's Todd's take:

"It was on the temple I felt the shot...it just shut down the cns system couldnt use my arms to catch my fall or anything i was watching everything till my head hit the canvas(which may have put me out)i blinked and he hit me with a hammer fist....the way i fell made it look much worse than it was...I wasn't gassed i was more frustrated and trying to stick to the game plan should of threw that out after the first 30 seconds ...my game plan was horrible......i wasn't snapping punches instead i was muscling them shoudl of kicked should of grappled should of fought....I'll be back and show I am more than capable of wrestling etc"

You know what really bothers me about that that statement? The punctuation, or lack thereof. Holy God man, they're called periods. Commas? I digress.  Anyway, he seems like he's in a pretty good state of mind about the whole thing.  This is likely just a hiccup for this guy.  A much needed, and probably inevitable, growing pain that was going to show up one way or the other.

Lastly, you've gotta check out this video of Joey "Karate" Diaz making his picks for UFC 114.  Only more hilarious in retrospect.  His pick for the Duffee fight is reason alone.

He looked good in the first

But after the first time he caught Russow he just started winging punches, I knew he was gonna punch himself out. He can say he wasn’t gassed but he didn’t have any speed after the first round

Rather off subject, but I learned that three round fights are bullshit. We’re in an era filled with wrestling, and they need to change two things immediately:

 1. 5 round fights
 2. Quicker breakups in ‘stalemate’ positions

5 rounds for fatties who can barely do 3?

I say give them 1 round to work it out

I agree with 5 rounders for some fights, but not all. Nobody wants 5 round Maynard and Okami fights.

Duffee looked good, but definitely slowed down. I was predicting that. It’s the muscly muscles. and yes, that uppercut combo worked well at first, but russow even sucking on the feet like he does, started to move his head back and the uppercut missed over and over and over… he simply needed to change it to a jab, then right hook or overhand and it would have landed

Oh Yaaah!

He should join that ultimate arm wrestling thing!

Although this kid might ruin his run
