Everyone won in the Brilz-Nogueira Fight

I_cfc_medium

Jason Brilz
Yes, Brilz officially loss and yes, he missed out on his whopping $9,000 win bonus but Jason walked out of the cage a winner in more ways then one. Thanks to the judges poor decision Brilz is a name in MMA circles where as before he wasn't even considered a potential prospect. That sudden transformation will generate more income then the $9,000 he lost out on. Plus, Brilz near upset puts him in a great position within the UFC. Zuffa always needs more light heavyweights and Jason's performance might place him in that coveted roll of "prospect". That means high profile fights against beatable opponents in an effort to build Jason into an Argonaut (see what I just did there?). That's a much better path for long term success, both inside the cage and financially,  than being suddenly thrown into the meat grinder, which the UFC would probably have done if Jason had won outright. Essentially, Brilz won notoriety, fame, marketability and a new status within the light heavyweight division despite not receiving the official win. Not a bad night of work in this writer's opinion.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
'Lil Nog's mystique certainly took a hit but his victory, however suspect, doesn't remove him from the title picture. Considering what could have happened with an outright loss you have to count this as a win. Rogerio can now fight a top-ten opponent (Forrest Griffin perhaps?) in a potential title eliminator where Nogueira has a chance to return to form.

Star-divide

UFC
Zuffa gets a chance to remake the Rogerio Nogueira-Forrest Griffin fight with a new level of intrigue plus Zuffa gets a new name/prospect at 205lbs. to nurse along and build up. That's the best of both worlds considering that the UFC always needs more light heavyweights and they still get a marquee match-up perfect for a co-main event.

The Fans
It might be frustrating to see the wrong guy with his hand raised at the end of the fight but Rogerio vs. Brilz was an exciting fight full of drama, which made it a fun fight to experience.  Despite the stomach turning injustice the fall out is still a win. Fans now know who Brilz is and should eagerly await his future performances and for those that wanted to see the Rogerio-Griffin fight it will probably still happen. Basically, fans saw a great fight, now know of a new up and coming fighter to watch plus will get the fight that they wanted to see in the first place.

The people that actually put money on Brilz must be just a little upset, especially the very few that gamlbled on a UD. Poor bastards.

I was surprised by that guy, I thought he was getting a can to fight, but I was surprised. He lacked technique, but was a brawler and tough as nail and as it was said he may have won more out of this contrversy than if he would’ve had won. People would’ve been bitching that lil nog lost to a can… Still a fan of lil nog tho…

You gotta love Brilz smiles at the start of rd 3, he knew he was doing something great there. He seemed to take the “loss” well too, not getting ugly about it. He’s got my appreciation.

Brilz knew he was a winner either way...

It makes up for his loss to Elliot Marshall….

Very good article. Jason the Argonaut? ha. does Brilz have a nickname? someone get me his twitter. Jason “The Argonaut” Brilz! I like it.

However, I don;t think Griffin will be Lil Nog’s next fight. The reason Brilz got the fight is that in his contract Lil nog has to fight so often, and they contractually owed him a fight. So instead of scrapping it when the big names refused to fight him, they had to find someone in Brilz who was WAY less popular.

If Griffin is going to be out until Nov/Dec, that will make 6-7 months between fights for Lil Nog. I’m not sure how long ago Lil Nog’s debut was, but it was less than 6-7 months ago. Griffin-Nog doesn’t seem possible…. yet.

I would love to see Bones Jones fight Lil Nog after he rapes Matyushenko. They went and asked Jones to step up for this fight in Griffin’s absence but he refused as he needed more time to prep. Well, give the youngster an 8 week camp and tell him to STFU. It would be an amazing fight, and the type of top talent the kid deserves.

I just finally listened to the 114 WKR preview podcast...

…and they didn’t even think this fight was worth breaking down. I know hindsight is 20/20, but c’mon. They skipped it. Its hilarious how the first 3 fights went the exact opposite of how they claimed it would go.
