Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Cool your jets on Toronto and get excited for Pittsburgh

There's a Ben Roethlisberger joke in here but I don't want to make it...

First of all, a disclaimer. I was born in the city of three rivers so there is a slight amount of bias in this post (David, get over the fact that Alexander Ovechkin can't win at anything and Crosby is a better player/human being).

At the UFC 114 media round table Dana White said that the St. Pierre-Koscheck fight could take place in Toronto or Pittsburgh. Josh is a Western Pennsylvania native and Georges is the best thing to come out of Canada since Prohibition (yeah bootleg whiskey!), so both venues make sense but if we had to place odds on it Pittsburgh would be the huge favorite.

While Pittsburgh is a likely venue due to the fact that the sport is, you know, actually regulated; Pittsburgh also has the advantage of a new indoor stadium perfect for the UFC. It will even have that brand new stadium smell (it smells like pine sol and virgins), which would be a huge plus for an end of the year mega-UFC event that we've grown accustomed to.

When it comes to Toronto, yes the UFC opened up an office in the future home of the Buffalo Bills but that doesn't translate into immediate political success in getting MMA regulation. Put it this way; how many "MMA will get done in New York" stories have you read recently? That's what I thought. Without serious political momentum, which, according to reports WKR has seen, doesn't exist in Ontario, regulation will not happen in 2010.

Regulation by the province of Ontario itself simply will not happen, because the local athletic commission head is a shithead who doesn’t like MMA, and the provincial government has basically decided it has better things to do than force his hand.

What will (and must) happen sooner is changing the law at the federal level to make MMA legal nationwide. Judging by the reaction GSP got when he visited parliament recently, I’d say this is a strong possibility. But of course we’re talking about moving forward at the speed of federal politics, so who the fuck knows when it’ll actually get done.

Baltimore Ravens, your 2010 AFCN Champs

But Pittsburgh would still be a great place to host a UFC. Blue collar, smashmouth fans, just like Brawltimore.
