Ben Askren wins Bellator Season 2 Tourney

Storyimage-image-7031_medium

Ben Askren rode waves of takedowns and ground control to defeat Dan Hornbuckle via unanimous decision and win Bellator's Season 2 tournament setting up a title shot with welterweight champion Lyman Good

Ben Askren's win proved once and for all that Olympians are better wrestlers than non-Olympians. Who could have guessed that?

On a serious note, Askren's victory is another example of how wrestling, and the ability to control the opponent (the military calls this "the initiative") is KING in MMA.

HOLY SHIT

Though Hornbuckle was going to run through him or catch him in something. But Askren had his way with him.

Just WOW.

We need knees to the head on the ground. It would add that KO danger on the ground you don’t see in the States.

Knees to downed opponents may lead to more finishes

But it may increase the chance of spinal and cranial injuries.

Bottom line the odds are stacked against defensive guard players. Styles make fights and time and time again the athletic wrestler with submission savvy (both in a defensive and offensive sense) have shown to be the optimal skill set for modern mma.

Instead of trying to submit the wrestler, the appropriate gameplan should be to stay off your back as much as possible. Losing rounds going for super close subs that mean jack shit in the eyes of the judges = dumping a ton of effort into losing.

Fighters need to improve their anti wrestling/take down defense plain and simple.
