Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Paging Dr. Cox, the Nevada Athletic Commission needs your help

(We need Dr. Cox to drop the hammer of authority here)

For those that wondered about how Matt Hamill was allowed to fight with a staph infection/lesion/sore Kevin Iole adds a little information on who looked at the wound:

But Hamill was examined by three physicians - his personal doctor, Dr. Vicki Mazzorana of the NAC and Dr. Jeff Davidson, who works for the UFC. All three cleared him to fight and said he posed no risk. The scab was hard and the doctors said that even if it had come off during the fight, there was no chance of it affecting Jardine.

First of all only one of these doctors is in an objective position and that's the commission doctor. For those that believe that athletes' doctors are an unbiased source look at the recent lawsuits brought against personal doctors prescribing steroids, HGH and other performance enhancing drugs. Sadly, recent history has shown that personal doctors have a conflict of interest. The UFC doctor, is much like a team doctors for other professional sports, and, once again, if recent history has shown us anything these doctors are subject to the interests of the organization rather than the individual.

That leaves only the commission doctor in a (supposed) position of objectivity though Zach Arnold has a detailed report regarding her status within Nevada (definitely worth a read). It should be stated that no dermatologist (in other words, a specialist) was brought in to examine the sore and that the commission's doctor specialty is in emergency medicine. Then there is the fact that Matt Hamill stated he needed to go get antibiotics the next day, which, if the wound was "healed", should not be required.

The combination of these factors makes it clear that the commission failed in its due diligence, though they will most likely not admit it publicly for fear of compromising their authority.

i honestly don’t see anybody not tuning into the TUF finale because this fight got cancelled. it wasn’t a big head liner, no one really cared. so i’m surprised the UFC doctor didnt do anything. added the fact that we know people sitting ring side can be and are sprayed with blood, you can not subject spectators to possible in ring diseases.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

I'm going to start being the BE or KidNate of commenters, I'm just going to copy and paste your comments and say "I agree & Dana White sucks!"

The recent “Ask The Fight Doc” article referred to it as an “untreated active Staph skin infection”.

If he’s right about the “active” and “untreated” part, i’d think the UFC would want to go after this NSAC doctor – for their own good !
