Fedor: An Uncertain Future

Photo via www.m-1global.com

If all goes as expected tomorrow night Fedor Emelianenko will defeat Fabricio Werdum. Yet the fighting future for Fedor remains as foggy as a morning on the Russian Steppes.

Here's what we know: Fedor will have one more fight on his Strikeforce contract on Sunday and that's about it. Everything else is pure speculation.

Much like when Fedor signed with Affliction there were limited options in Strikeforce. With Affliction the road map was clear, Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski (who went through a mini-resurgence with wins over Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson) and Josh Barnett. The same could be said of Strikeforce which offered Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers who had just KO'd Arlovski prior to the Fedor signing and Fabricio Werdum. A victory over Werdum would leave Overeem as the obvious final opponent but the gulf between the two camps --something D.W. of Head Kick Legend has touched upon during our podcasts-- raises doubts about such a fight ever truly materializing.

Who does that leave left as an opponent? Antonio Silva? Josh Barnett in Japan? Even the Overeem fight, something hardcores yearn for, has marketing serious difficulties in North America. Simply put the cupboard is almost bare.

Due to the impending shortage of contractual fights not to mention opponents, speculation naturally turns to the UFC, which becomes even hazier with Fedor's recent contradictory comments (possibly due to issues with translation) but even that talking point is ill informed as the classic issue of co-promotion will, in all probabilitty, forever forestall any signing.

Thus we look upon the greatest heavyweight fighter in MMA's short history staring into an uncertain future with seemingly few paths to tread. Will tomorrow night provide a beacon of light through the Cossack fog or will we continue to wander through the haze.

I dunno...

Fedor is, IMO, at this point, interesed in preserving his legacy and making money above all else. I hate that the most dominant HW in MMA is beating guys that have been cut by the UFC, or are sub par competition at best. He is ducking Overeem because he will get beat and he has no interest in the UFC because probably the top 4 HWs would destroy him. I am a Fedor fan, but he is not what he used to be. I really don’t know if he was ever as good as he has been portrayed since much of the “top competition” in Pride was very overrated. Highlight reel knockouts of tomato cans should not impress anyone.

I would love to see him face off against a current UFC champion, but that won’t happen. He wants to go out on top and getting smashed by a truely dominant wrestler does not interest him.

You're stoned...

if you think Fedor is ducking anybody or is afraid to lose. I mean c’mon dude, how anti-Fedor are you? You’re UFC nut-hugging and buying into the hater-bullshit because Fedor isn’t in the UFC. You wanna talk overrated? How about saying an ex-WWE wrestler with 5 PROFESSIONAL FIGHTS would “destroy” the greatest Heavweight of all-time? The top UFC HW’s are nothing but prospects with potential…their resumes are a joke compared to Fedor’s.

When Fedor BECAME a legend, he was fighting in PRIDE – the top MMA organization in the world for HW’s. He beat everyone they put in front of him – Big Nog (twice), Cro Cop, Hunt, Coleman, Randleman, Fujita, etc. The UFC HW division has been a joke until LAST YEAR when they up-and-comers started getting all this hype.

Bottomline, don’t jump on the hate-wagon so quickly without knowing the facts and don’t assume Fedor “wants to go out on top and getting smashed by a truely dominant wrestler does not interest him.” <——another laughable claim from an uninformed Brock-lover.

Why do the irish fight amongst themselves? NO OTHER WORTHY OPPONENTS...

Let's see...

Big Nog—almost KO’d by Herring, brutalized by Timmay, KO’d by Mir. Wow. I won’t even bring up Cain.

Cro Cop—Still has night terrors about Gabe Gonzaga and Check Kongo

Mark Hunt—MMA record 5-6. Fedor was number 2 in his current string of 5 straight losses. Funny stat- It took Fedor 6 minutes longer than anyone else to finish him in the streak

Coleman—Sigh

Randleman—Double Sigh

Fujita—Has he ever been considered anything other than a medical oddity?

Anyway, I don’t hate Fedor, I am actually a fan. However, I do not beleive he could beat the 1985 Bears in the Superbowl.

Let me get this straight...

You’re trying to compare the top 10 heavyweights from 5 or so years ago to the current top 10 heavyweights and think that’s a legit argument? Do you really think that Big Nog and Cro Cop 7 years ago (when they were in their prime) wouldn’t be able to hang with the current list of UFC heavyweights? Is this post a joke or are you actually being serious?

And while you’re at it, why not post the resumes of the top 4 HW’s in the UFC? (PLEASE enlighten us all) NOW we’re talking some serious competition that’ll blow the doors off of Fedor’s pedigree!!!

Your words are as twisted and feeble as an old woman….

You lack perspective, my good man

you probably weren’t a fan at the time so I won’t berate you for denigrating some of the greatest HW’s of all time, but I will try to provide you with some of the perspective you lack.

  • Rodrigo was the PRIDE HW champion
  • CC was the most feared HW striker since Vovchanchyn
  • Hunt won the K-1 HW GP
  • Coleman was a former Olympic wrestler who was only a couple years removed from winning the PRIDE HW GP

Randleman was a caricature but was also one of the best HW wrestlers of the era, Fujita isn’t really even worth mentioning since he was basically a punching bag for all of the top fighters of the day, and you’re forgetting a couple of other fighters that Fedor beat like Arona and Herring.

I hope that helped a little bit.

(for the record I’m not saying Fedor is the best HW today because of 5 year old achievements, just that he is the inarguable GOAT of the HW division… and when I said “some of the greatest HW’s of all time” I was only including Fedor, Rodrigo, and CC, the rest were just credible opponents of the day that people tend to write off now)

thank you excel!

Excel has a realistic view here.

Brew is outta wack the second he associated smoking weed with impaired judgement. Obviously you haven’t tried the ganja, nor the rogan.

And loco is outta wack looking at some of these HW’s Fedor beat at this point in time and not then.

Both you guys make valid points, mixed with not so valid. Excel puts the valids together. Yes, basically all those HW’s Fedor beat are nolonger relevant. However, many were BEASTS in their prime. That makes a great point for best ever arguments, but little to nothing to do with best right now arguments. To say fedor trumps, for example cuz everyone makes it, lesnar RIGHT NOW because of their backgrounds is ridiculous. The present is now, the past is past. Its like argueing chuck liddel as best lhw of all time (not my opinion fyi). You cooould argue it,but none of those KOs mean jack now, cuz he ain’tthe best. Now that’s super exagerated compared to the fedor argument…

In the end, both of you should step back, try to unravel any prior prejudices, and read excel’s response a few times. At this point, fedor is the best hw of all time. Is he the best hw right now? I don’t think so, but we can’t really find out less he enters the UFC. Beating werdum shows he’s top 10 in my opinion. Beating ubereem top 5.

End stoner rant (see weed doesn’t make your senseless, it just makes me lose track of how much I’m typing)

For the record I wasn’t trying to take a stance on his legacy rather point out that there are questions regarding future/possible fights
