Oh yeah, Cyborg beat Jan Finney to a pulp last night
The Cyborg Santos-Jan Finney fight --no, that word doesn't adequately describe the beatdown that was delivered, which was closer to something from Clockwork Orange than a prize fight-- got a lot of people questioning referee Kim Winslow.
Even Cyborg could not compute the decision
"I was really surprised the fight wasn't stopped in the first round,'' Cyborg said. "I know she was trying hard, but I could tell I was hurting her, especially when she was down and covering up like she was. But it is my job to keep fighting until the fight is over.''
Many people thought the fight went on too long and questioned Kim Winslow's decision to let the fight continue. Luke Thomas went so far as to call Winslow a sadist.
On the flip side, Jordan Breen took exception to that characterization and the overall outcry in the community:
"...I found the most annoying Tweets people who acted as though Kim Winslow’s some kind of sadist and acted as though she was irresponsible in acting this way."
...
Not a whole lot of intense power to polish people off and that's' one reasons that I thought Kim Winslow acted appropriately. She stood there, she watched the hammer fists, she was acute enough the first time around to realize that the punches were going to Jan Finney's, the back of her head, and therefore call for and took the point away from Cris Cyborg.
Sadly, this fight was the second most uncomfortable thing of the evening. Frank Shamrock's retirement montage, speech thingy was WAY more uncomfortable.
What say you? Did Winslow play it close to the chest or let it go on too long?

I agree that both moments were terribly uncomfortable to watch.
I kept screaming at the tv, “stop the fight you crazy bitch!”…

I think part of the discomfort came from the fact that we knew Finney didn’t have a prayer. Then again she did land a big punch to start round 2…

That showed extreme heart from her but it just shouldn’t have even gone that long. That was the very first time in an mma fight that I was covering my eyes because I just couldnt sit there and watch a female get brutalized like that. Is it a double standard? Yes. Do I care? No.

I don’t think Winslow let the fight go on too long. Not criminally anyway.
I think there’s two subtle bits of sexism going on here. 1) Finney is a woman, and a fairly attractive one at that. And of course, Cyborg is a monster lady who looks vicious in the ring. We do not want to see pretty woman smashed up by monsters. 2) Winslow is a woman, and therefore, must be incompetent as a referee.
I don’t think that’s all that’s at play here, but I think it’s prevalent. In any case, Finney kept fighting. At no point did she turtle up long enough that told me she wanted out. She turtled a bunch, but would grab at Cyborg’s legs if she got close. She moved her hips when she was on her back. She covered up and went fetal as well, but never for long.
Maybe we should ask Finney how she felt about the whole thing?

THANK YOU!
All this shenanigansis annoying to me. If this was a male fight nobody wouldbat an eye, but since its a woman getting eat up they want it stopped immediately.
Let’s face it. In men’s mma you are given the benefit of the doubt and the fight is not stopped unless you are out, or no defending yourself. (Hell the 1st round of warren v. Pitbull on Thursday was 10x worse than this and got barely a whisper) Just cuz finney is a female doesn’t mean she should be treated differently in the cage.
She was getting her ass beat, but was defending herself. If that was minotauro getting his ass beat nobody would say a word. I think jan finney did an excellent job

I admitted in my second post that I had a “double standard” thought process when I was so disgusted with the beating that she took. It really didn’t have to do with how pretty Finney is. For me, it was just incredibly disturbing to see a woman being beaten the way she was. For some reason, seeing a man getting beaten to a bloody pulp doesn’t bother me but with a woman, it does.

i respect you for admitting it
There’s nothing wrong with that at all.. its a matter of taste really. Ill admit, I didn’t enjoy watching that at all.

To be fair, I’d say it went on just a tad too long. Nothing shocking, it happens in the Men’s fights as well.
Gotta give Finney credit though, she didn’t quit, back away, dodge, run around, butt scoot or tap due to strikes. She came out swinging for as long as she could.

Actually....
Once Cyborg crushed her Finney’s sternum, dropping her yet again, and proceeding to wail on Finney for about the 20th time with no defense on Finney’s part, she finally tapped. It’s hard to see on the camera angle, but yes, Winslow only stopped the fight when Finney tapped. And I can’t blame Finney one bit. Afterwords she was coughing like she could barely breathe after that shot.
That's probably one of the reasons why perhaps female mma won't become mainstream!
people still have that double standard. She a warrior for fighting that beast!
