UFC 117 is Official and it is Surprisingly Awesome

Sonnen-silva_medium

UFC 117 is now official for August 7th in Oakland, California.

Here's the televised card as it stand now:

Champ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen (for middleweight title)
Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Hughes
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Clay Guida
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
Junior Dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson

Compare UFC 117's main card to UFC 116's:

Champ Brock Lesnar vs. Interim Champ Shane Carwin (heavyweight title-unification bout)
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Wanderlei Silva
Matt Brown vs. Chris Lytle
Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
Kurt Pellegrino vs. George Sotiropoulos

Clearly no main event is going to hold a candle to Brock Lensar's return but Sonnen's mouth and Silva's Ron Artestness will create a great deal of intrigue (they're Jedi son!). Fitch vs. Alves is a fantastic #2 though it end up being the #4 because Zuffa doesn't like Fitch, which, perversely ends up being great for us. Hughes vs. Almeida might be short on the star power of Wanderlei vs. "Sexyama" but it's the exact same match-up of faded legend vs. old guy who might still be good.

Pellegrino vs. Sotiropoulos might be a little bit better than Guida vs. dos Anjos but once again both fights are stylistically the same. Finally the Nelson-dos Santos fight is sooooo much better that Brown vs. Lytle or Bonnar  vs. Soszynski (it was on the undercard and now its on the main card, huh?).

I'll watch Stephan Bonnar fight until he's 65

I don’t care if he looses every fight the guy fucking brings it.
And Matt Brown vs Chris Lytle has fight of the night all over it.
all of these fights are gonna be sick and that’s the truth.
I can’t wait until Fitch beats Alves, I think the guy is massively over rated

I have 2nd thoughts about Alves. His ground game is seriously lacking. Fitch is as tough as you can get at 170lbs. Alves and Anthony Johnson1 really needs to consider 185 or 205lbs.

Brown vs. Lytle rematch should be GREAT.

1 Johnson is really wet behind the ears in MMA.

No shit

Johnson is supposedly moving to 185, I hope he stays there so he can actually make weight

Yup

They were talking like it would just be one fight so they don’t push back his return any further…

But honestly, He would probably look better at 185 anyways. You know he has to be fighting extremely dehydrated. Imagine if he had a full gas tank…terrifying.

I don’t care about Lytle but I always like seeing Matt Brown fight.

How can you not care about Lytle?

The guy is a walking fight of the night bonus

Upon further review...

yeah, his fights are good. I always see his name and go “…who the hell is he again?”

haha

Lytle actually submitted Brown with a guillitone like 3 years ago or sumtin. I think it was the fight right before he went into TUF.

I don’t think it’ll go the same way, as Brown has evolved dramatically since then… but one thing is for sure, the fans will definitely win with this one!

You don’t care about Lytle? He ALWAYS brings it. Win or lose it’s always a good fight.

Can't wait

for either of these cards. I really can’t wait to hear what Sonnen has to say after he gets served a big cup of shut the fuck up. JDS vs Neslon: Yes please. And of course, Lesnar vs Carwin aka Clash of the Titans is very interesting. All of these fights have me intrigued.

MMA is crazy,

No one thought Penn would lose to Edgar (he didn’t in my opinion), no one saw Serra beating GSP, or Shields over Hendo.
What if Sonnen lays on Silva for 5 rounds and earns a decision? What happens then?
Who gets the next shot?
 Imediate rematch?
Vitor?

Apparently...

It’s in Vitor’s contract. If he won he gets the title shot. I could see them making Vitor v. sonnen, and still giving Anderson an immediate title shot (after the Vitor v. Sonnen match).

As far as winning, who gave Sonnen a chance to beat Marquardt? Or Yushin Okami? The dude as the perfect smothering upset style really. I would say, I personally feel that Anderson might lose. Well, this is the strongest I’ve felt for an anderson loss since Franklin’s second fight.

P.S. BJ definitely won. And I actually bet 10 bucks on Shields over Hendo! (dude looked outta shape)

Yeah

Upsets happen all the time, but Sonnen has a history of getting caught in subs and Anderson is no slouch off his back. Plus, Chael is gonna look so slow on the feet that I think he’ll take a lot of damage before he can even get it to the ground. Plus, fuck him. He’s a racist douche nozzle with the most boring style that warrants not 1/10 of 1% of the shit he’s talking.

Ok dude

If you really think he can, more power to ya. But what makes you think that? Sand in your vagina from when Anderson danced last time?

No I’m a huge A.S. fan, and I hope he wins. I just think Cheal is dangerous for Silva….no need to get nasty on the internet dude.

Ok

Sorry. I just can’t stand that racist douche Chael and hope he gets taught a lesson and see no possible way he lays on Andy for 25 minutes w/o getting caught in a sub or getting KO’d on the way to a takedown.

I think Kurt Pellegrino is going to want to keep it standing and George will be ready. I want to see a nice sub but I think this one ends in TKO

don’t sleep on Kurt, he’s on a roll and his Jits is legit.
