Frank Mir Thinking About Cutting To 205

Frank-mir_medium

Hey, people.  I'll let you get on to reading about how Frank Mir is an idiot in a second, but I just had one quick memo for you guys.  I'm interning over at SB Nation's headquarters here in DC, just writing about anything and everything sports.  Mostly MMA, but really anything they ask.  Anyway, most everything I write is going to the MMA page on SB Nation.  I've been able to sneak a story on WKR here and there, but it is what it is.  The best solution is just to post an excerpt from something and link to it.  The expansion of the regional pages has been kinda crazy, but I really enjoy writing for this site and it's community.  I urge you guys to check out the main MMA page.  We are very much in need of your help voicing opinions and giving us feedback on our stuff.  Brent and I are working against the current, trying to raise MMA's profile in the sports world.  Come hang out with us, we're lonely.  : (

thanks

In a recent interview at the UFC Fan Expo, Frank was asked about some possibilities for future matchups. Instead of throwing out names like Carwin, Lesnar, and Big' Nog, Mir surprisingly admitted his dream matchup to be Anderson Silva. While a plethora of fighters have claimed to want a piece of the 'Michael Jordan of MMA,' as Mir puts it, he seemed completely serious. I'm no math-a-magician, but these guys don't exactly look like shopping buddies.

Well, Frank also talked about the disturbing notion of dropping a weight class down to 205, something that should shock and horrify the sensibilities of even the most apathetic humanitarians.

Why is he an idiot?
He could cut to 205, Joe Riggs once was over 300 lbs. Now hes a welterweight.

Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.

by MarcoDos on Jun 8, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. he didn’t put on20 lbs of fat to get to 265, it was all muscle. Watching him cut to 205 would be like watching Anthony Johnson try to cut to 155.

by Roll for Life on Jun 8, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he'll be that effective at 205

Without all that muscle and bulk, I just don’t see him bullying anybody on the ground or taking everyone down with ease. (which is what he is planning to do) His stand-up is average at best and he’s not quick enough to keep up with Rashad, Machida or Jones….so it truly doesn’t make sense to me why he would drop down to 205 and get picked apart by the likes of Shogun and company.

Why do the irish fight amongst themselves? NO OTHER WORTHY OPPONENTS...

LOL

He’s not even that effective at 265. I can’t stand this douche. “…full of sound and fury signifying nothing.” Can he just take a beating like a man and STFU for once?

I'm your huckleberry.

Now he’s rumored to be fighting Mir at 205 in November….

And never starve even under the most severe conditions thanks to the fat stored in her legs. She can survive an entire winter, kinda like squirrels with acorns.

And thanks for embarrassing us Pittsburghers.

Frank Mir could realistically make 205. It wouldn’t be easy, it’d be a diet of ice cubes and treadmills. If you were to take allistair overeem now and forget about his prior career at 205 you’d say he’s crazy. He has a bigger frame and more muscle than Mir. The problem is that mir would have to lose at least 20 lbs of muscle, and that’s a lot harder than fat.

by chadington on Jun 7, 2010 8:00 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It's much easier to add weight than cut weight

Overeem looked thin at 205 and he’s tall, so adding weight with supplements (not roids) and eating like Chunk from The Goonies shot him up to 250ish smoothly. Completely different scenario with Mir…Unless Mir gets his stomach stapled, I don’t see him being able to drop that much weight without severely weakening his body/health. He’s got a big frame with alot of solic muscle (recent addition) and it’s pretty difficult to overcome genetics, with or without professional help.

Overeem was overcoming his genetics. Read about what his diet was back then. It’s possible, but would require a few months of world of Warcraft and celery.

by chadington on Jun 8, 2010 11:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

i do believe...

Mir had weighed in at 235 for a lesnar fight.

Realistically, with his frame, 205 isn’t so absurd. Not at all. I wouldn’t say cutting th LHW is moronic…. id say taking a year to add 20-30 pounds BEFORE deciding to cut to 205 is pretty retarded though. He could already be at 205, now he’s gonna have to take a year to work down, which means probably 2 fights at HW while he’s getting smaller… yaaaaah.
