Dana White calls Toney vs. Couture a 'Freak Show'

Mmmm unrecognizable freak fried food mmmm

Dana White talked to Luke Thomas of 106.7 The Fan about, well, just about everything.

White hypes Lesnar vs. Carwin, says he has "zero interest" in Fedor, and then proceeds to use a bunch of circular logic. For instance you have to fight three times a year to be considered the best in a division. I guess that eliminates Georges St. Pierre because he will only fight twice this year... Then there's the comments about how Fedor was never any good but if the Russian had had the proper promotion in the UFC then things would've been different. Not that any of this really matters it just reminds WKR of political double speak.

Come to think of it, that's the perfect way of describing this whole promotion/promoter gig. It's just like a political campaign. You have your candidate (the fighters but mostly Dana) try to get their base (the fans) to come out and vote in the election (buy the pay-per view) while convincing enough independents that their the best for the job (grabbing mainstream attention).

And just like politics you have your moment of flip-slopping followed with heart-felt honesty:

It's a freak show. I said I'd never put on a freak show fight and I'm doing it. Listen, this guy [Toney] chased me around the country saying bad things about the sport. If he wants to get his ass whooped, I'm gonna let him. You want me to tell you, ‘James Toney vs. Randy Couture is gonna be the greatest fight in the history of the sport?' No. I'm building a great card around this fight. You're not buying the James Toney vs. Randy Couture fight alone.

We love the UFC.

… somehow reading that quote i’m a little less interested in the fight. so little in life is exciting when bills stack up on you and there’s no certainty of work tomorrow… i like the hype leading up to the fight. and the man responsible for hyping it just said it’s gonna suck ass, hmmph

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

I'm going to start being the BE or KidNate of commenters, I'm just going to copy and paste your comments and say "I agree & Dana White sucks!"

You weren't gonna watch it because you thought it was gonna be a competitive fight.

You know just as well as everyone else that Toneys 6 months of jujitsu and check side kicks was gonna matter against Couture. You want him to get smashed like everyone else and that’s why your gonna watch. (Sorry to put words in your mouth but I find it hard to believe that Dana just ruined anything for you)

i need somebody, maybe some boxing fans to say he’s gonna come in here and whoop some ass. but so far, nobody gives toney a chance. boxing fans, boxing champions, mma fans, and the ufc promoter all call this a squash match. if nobody cares, why have the fight?

I wanna see him get his face smashed personally, and that's enough for me.

It’s not exactly the same but this fight reminds me of the Hendo/Bisping fight. Everyone knew Bisping was gonna get smashed, that was the draw for the fight.

more competitive than cyborg/finney

Least toney has a punchers chance… til they grapple and he loses punching power.

Hell, toney has a better chance than frankie edgar does! Bj mad

It’s going to be great either way. Captain America might just double leg that turd and grind him to pulp (my expectations)… and Toney just might get that short tight uppercut that ends the fight. And then what?

I’m buying the PPV for the James Toney vs. Randy Couture fight alone.

Honestly, portraying Couture/Toney as “for the pride of MMA against those stupid boxing fans” is a better promotional angle than trying to sell it as a competitive match. That sound you here isn’t honesty, it’s just the gears switching.

I’d love nothing more than Randy getting the win via dirty boxing.

Why Boxing Fans will never respect MMA

The UFC is the biggest circus out any MMA promotion. It is basically an evolved Pro Wrestling organisation and has become as ridiculous as TNA. However, the thing that annoys me is the way Dana white makes fools of the UFC fans. He rationalises his actions by insisting he hates freak shows but realistically that is all the UFC has become.

The Street Fighter – Kimbo Slice, The Boxer vs. the Wrestler (Couture v Toney), Manufactured feuds (Ortiz v Shamrock, Jackson v Evans, many more…) and the Heavyweight champ (former WWE star) who showed his technique of blocking punches – cover your eyes with your hands and roll on the ground.

What’s next – Maybe have a leprechaun vs. Thai Ladyboy. And people wonder why boxing fans dismiss MMA as nonsense.

Any boxing fan that shows that much ignorance is basically exposing themselves as idiots. Boxing fans should know about freakshows because that’s what the sport has been for years.

Fake confrontations at weigh-ins, trying to hype one sided beatdowns as mega fights and having old washed up legends grasping for every last penny.

Boxing fan needs to worry about it’s sport becoming even more irrelevant than it already is thanks to the UFC. Which keeps breaking records during a reccession, while the last few draws of the sport fade away or can’t fight because of politics and diva athletes talk about a joke.
