DREAM Plans to Reanimate the Corpse of Japanese MMA and Conquer the World

500x_100717_deadrising2b_medium
(Brace yourself for Zombie Japanese MMA!!!! The end is nigh!)

t's no secret that MMA in Japan is down. The bubble there has burst and the wreckage is pretty spectacular with fighters fleeing to North America and Zuffa with the leftovers splitting into multiple promotions.

The largest of these promotions, DREAM, has a plan to bring back the glory days.

"This is a declaration of war against the WWE and UFC. From Asia, we will take the world. Mr. Ishii is completely supporting us. We won't stand a chance in the American market so we will spread to the rest of the world. When K-1 and PRIDE were competing against each other, 80-percent of the martial arts market was in Japan. It is now the opposite and Japan is only 20-percent. We were worried that Japan would be left behind if we let this continue, it is unacceptable. We needed to change our business model. We've let Dana White get a lead on us. Before (Shinya) Aoki beats (Gilbert) Melendez, we must win as promoters."

How is DREAM going to do it? With the backing of FEG (that's the Mr. Ishii referenced in the above quote. No he's not Ken Watanabe) and a timely investment from a Shanghai investment bank to the tune of $230 million USD. 'Hey, UFC! We'll see your authoritarian investors and raise you with communism greenbacks!'

They even have a handy dandy flow chart:

Alright, that looks like something a business student makes in "How Not to Design Flowcharts 101" but look on the bright side, at least it isn't as bad as that Afghanistan flowchart...

i was a little curious about that too.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

I'm going to start being the BE or KidNate of commenters, I'm just going to copy and paste your comments and say "I agree & Dana White sucks!"

A bet's a bet:
"The #1 Heavy Weight of the World Brock Lesnar!" – "All aboard The Pain Train Chug a Chug a Choo Choo!"

I’m looking forward to it, I understand that there’s a video online some where.

There should be some sort of celebration here on WKR. Like a loop of the fight streaming for 24hours straight
… with live chat
…so we can all praise Kalib’s performance.

If he loses a fight…the site’s background should be changed to black (with the text changed to white).

…these are just ideas.

people calling out the UFC in the past hasn’t worked… cant imagine it will go over well this time. but i do think it will affect the UFC’s expansion into japan.

i think its more damaging to the UFC’s planned expansion into China

Micah I agree

It can only slow down the UFC’s Asian plan. Dream and K-1 have the name recognition, tradition and knowledge of the territory. Zuffa will need to hire someone that will wow the Asian mma fanbase, someone like Sakaraba. I think in the end, Dream is a poorly run promotion, bad management is never a good way to make money long term.

If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?

it may slow down the asian expansion

But an aditional 200+ million into mma worldwide is wonderful. I’m sure with these chinese investors dream will raise mma’s stature in china substantially. That’s only a good thing!

Will they beat out ufc…nah. the ufc has a sustainable market already, a sustainable cashflow, the top talent, and the top markets. We will probably see feg control asia for longer- that’s all.

No. You'll never walk alone when japanese zombie girls are involved.

i love how they group the UFC with the WWE

maybe the two should join forces to fight the japanese threat. i smell a copromotion in which GSP turns heel and smashes Greg Jackson with a chair.

Haaaa!

I like how they are pioneers and plan to crack the African market. And what the hell is a “Special Purpose Vehicle” – are they going to fight with Hummer’s or something?

Can you imagine Genki Sudo walking to the cage with a bunch of Japanese zombie nurses ? Screens around the world would melt from the coolness.
