Cain Velasquez: The Real Winner of UFC 116?

3884037470_9fed0c5ed5_medium

Brock Lesnar's rocky first round and Shane Carwin's inability to supply oxygen to his muscles in the second round left some pundits and fans feeling very bullish on Cain Velasquez's chances in taking out Brock Lesnar. Cain is a superb wrestler, perhaps even better than Brock despite never winning a NCAA national title. Plus, Velasquez actually knows how to box. Then there is the fact that Cain capable of lasting longer than three minutes (every man's dream).

Has the narrative around a potential Brock-Cain bout changed? Will the conventional wisdom desert the self-described baddest SOB on the planet in favor of the guy with the "Brown Pride" tattoo?

i voted no... but i do believe it's possible

velasquez is known for having pillow hands (even though he did show some power shots against big nog). i think velasquez will have a hard time doing enough damage to not get caught by lesnar at some point in the fight.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

I'm going to start being the BE or KidNate of commenters, I'm just going to copy and paste your comments and say "I agree & Dana White sucks!"

i can see cain winning

If he can stay on his feet, he wins for sure. Brocks got 20ish lbs on him, but at that weight. Its only 7ish percent bigger.

I could see a frankie edgar v. Sean sherk type fight happening.

I’m stoked to see the betting line. Even though I’m sure the pro’s will be giving cain a chance, I’m positive the fans won’t. Cain will get over +200 I foresee

Not gonna happen.

I like Cain alot, but I don’t think his skill set can overcome the raw physicallity of Brock, let alone make Brock work from his back. He’s going to get ground up.

Lesnar is a beast but have you ever seen anybody ragdoll Big Ben?

Cain got enough to take the big man down i’m confident in that. But how Cain would fair on his back is a question that needs to be answered.

Cain said...

He was working hard to not just throw a shot any time there was an opening, but go for good openings hard. I don’t believe the shots carwin hit brock with were supremely powerful, I believe cain can at least match those shots.

With the odds people selected on here we have brock as a 2-1 favorite. That puts cain at +200. yes please.

Should be interesting at the very least

There are so many ways this bout could go. It all depends on who’s night it is I think.

  1. Is Brock just too big for Cain? Will Brock smother him and just hold him down?
  2. What will Cain’s offensive game plan be? Ground and pound or striking?
  3. Will Brock work on his stand-up and try to strike with Cain at all?
  4. Can Cain avoid the takedown like Carwin did?
  5. Is Cain’s wrestling as good as they say it is? Is Brock’s overrated?

One thing you can be certain, this fight has the potential to go the distance. Neither fighter is known for finishing fights and both have great conditioning, so this one could be an entertaining war.

My fault

I didn’t word that well.

What i meant is, I don’t see either of them as elite finishers or guys who can’t go the distance (like Carwin). Both are wrestlers that aren’t known for their stand-up or submissions.

Cain has a very good chance

Size disadvantage aside, this is a good style matchup for Cain. Brock is still very rudimentary in his striking and has bad instincts defensively. Velasquez is just as fast if not faster, is younger, didn’t win the NCAA title but came up in a more recent and better/more competitive era of heavyweight wrestling than Lesnar.

If his hands are on point and his take downs (giving and defending them) are two, it will be a very competitive fight that I see Cain having more advantages.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

Say what?!?!

Neither fighter is known for finishing fights

Both of them have only been to decision once.

i think youre tryin to say soemthing like...

Either guy can go the distance, neither of them HAS to finish or they will gas (ala Shane)?

Which leads to saying that a quick on the feet Cain picking his shots towards a 5 round decision is very much a possibility

You’d be reaching alot to claim that Cain was a winner after seeing Brock’s performance, hell the look on his face that night said it all.

Cain is too small, doesn’t hit hard enough and doesn’t offer things that will give Brock more problems than the guys he’s already faced.

Anything can happen in mma, but it’s pretty clear that he’s a big underdog as most guys except for Carwin or Mir in rematches against Brock.
