Antonio Silva puts "Bigfoot" in mouth, sips Hatorade and says Lesnar is overrated

via www.tatame.com

Strikeforce heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva recently spoke out in an interview bout the current HW rankings:

Lesnar had a hard time on the first round, but got the guy on the second. I think that if (Shane) Carwin had a little more conditioning, he would have got the win. I don’t believe that Brock Lesnar deserves to be considered the number one of the ranking because I think that, if Werdum beat the number one, the right thing would be for him to become the number one. How can you beat the number one and be considered number two? I think this ranking is kind of crazy sometimes… There’s no way of a guy fighting only six times and becoming the number one of the ranking. And what about the history Fedor made in MMA? Just because of one loss, now he’s number three and a guy with only six fights on his professional record is the number one. That’s crazy, man. About Cigano, I’m sure he’ll be the next champion of Ultimate. He’s young, has a lot of disposition, has a sharp Boxing, it’s hard to put him down and I’m sure Cigano will become the next champion of UFC. The only one how can make a tough fight with him is (Cain) Velasquez, who is a complete fighter, a good wrestler, bangs quite well, has a good ground game… But I’m sure Cigano will become the champion of this division. I’m sure he’s back in Brazil and will spend some time with his family and then come back to the trainings and I know he’ll become the champion.

Star-divide

A Brazilian backing a Brazilian? Who'd have thunk it? Seriously, Bigfoot has the right to have his opinion, I just liked the headline. It's even better that he does feel this way because he is a heavyweight and has the opportunity to go to the UFC and fight those guys.  As for the rankings, I hate them, but a look at the last two years of the mentioned fighters gives an idea of a possible ranking.

Werdum has beaten #1 Fedor, beaten a top 20 Silva, beaten an outside the top 30 Mike Kyle and lost to an outside the top 30 Junior Dos Santos.

Fedor has beaten #5 Sylvia, #3 Arlovski, #10 Rogers and lost to #10 Werdum.

Lesnar has beaten a top 25 Herring, a top 5 (unranked due to inactivity but ranked at #6 following the loss) Couture,  #3 Mir and #Carwin.

Junior Dos Santos has beaten #10 Werdum, top 30 Struve, top 15 Crocop, low-ranked Yvel, and top 15 Gonzaga and top 15 Nelson.

Silva also spoke on the Fedor/Werdum fight:

Man, Werdum was very determined. I’m a person who believes a lot in God and, on my fight against him, he was losing on the first round, the second was tied, but he made it up and beat me. He didn’t beat me for any reason. God put Fedor on Werdum’s way because He knew he’s beat that guy. It wasn’t my moment, it was Werdum’s moment to shine. On my fight with Arlovski, I had the chance to talk to Werdum and I told him: "Werdum, there’re fighters who always get inside the cage as the favorites, but it doesn’t mean a thing, man. Go there and bring this win to us. Everybody knows he’s the favorite, but no one is unbeatable". He, right away, answered me: "I’ll win". He was very determined, he had positive thoughts in his mind and thinking positive makes good things come to you. He deserved that, he’s to be congratulated and the win came to Brazil. Now Werdum is "the" man.

I don’t get why people are getting their panties in a bunch. Its just self promotion (and a huge part of the sport). And Silva isn’t being a coward, its not like he’s bashing Brock over stupid stuff like, “oh he does steriods and is gay.” He’s just giving his honest opinion. Lesnar’s a grown man and if he can’t take another persons opinion then thats just too bad.

Lesnar Rankings, I agree with Silva

Let’s look at how Lesnar became the #1 heavyweight.

Randy Couture defeats Mike Van Arsdale in between a pair of defeats to the LHW champion Chuck Liddell.
He retires, comes back and defeats an injured Tim Sylvia to become the champion. How many heavyweights did he defeat to become champion?
Brock Lesnar comes along AND loses his UFC debut to Frank Mir. Lesnar then defeats Heath Herring. I’m going off on a tangent for a second, Herring LOSE his UFC debut to Jake O’Brien (who went down to 205lbs.), later loss to Big Nog after decisioning Chieck Kongo.

Back to Lesnar, he then gets a title shot which is obviously a reward for having such a HUGE name from his WWE days. He then beat the aforementioned Randy Couture and gets his revenge against Frank Murrrrr . . . and NOW he’s the #2 ranked heavyweight in MMA!!!

Fedor loses via quick submission to Werdum – a freaking BJJ world champion, Lesnar gets his ass beat by Shane Carwin in the 1st round comes back to win via submission and now he’s considered by some to be #1.

Now take a look at the fights and victories that Shane Carwin, Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez had in the UFC. I’m not saying their victories were far more impressive but I’m just saying I don’t see how Lesnar necessarily ranks higher than JDS or Cain Velasquez. He just recently proved he’s slightly better than Carwin – Yeah I said it.

werdum still in back of heavyweight rankings behind fedor.

he just beat fedor, how can that be? it won’t matter anyway b/c lesnar is going to beat cain and jds and there will be no discussion over this and fedor will fade to 4th b/c of inactivity b/c he won’t fight overeem . he will wait for werdum to get healthy. fedor has become a pussy while brock will fight cain than jds and probably carwin again.

Everything was cool until you declared Fedor a pussy.

Brock defeating Cain and JDS? There is a possibility. I’m interested in seeing how he does in the stand department. If Lesnar defeats those two then there’s a really strong argument for #1 status in my personal humble opinion.

Lesnar defeating Carwin in a rematch? While there is a possibility . . . that’s something I would like to see. Brock Lesnar apparently has a huge problem as a fighter. He doesn’t like getting hit in the face.

1)Who likes to get hit in the face? Seriously. Who walks around and goes “man you know what I could use. A good hit in the face”

2) Now take the people who like to get hit in the face and tell me how they’d do(in their respected weight classes) against a guy who hits like Carwin.

Brock’s striking defense is bad. just stick with that

by DayGeaux on Aug 17, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Brock’s striking defense is horrible but have you seen guys like Lytle, Leben, A. Silva, Chuck Liddell*, JDS, Rodrigo Noguiera, and Randy Couture take a shot and their reaction? Lesnar’s reaction was off the charts and revealed a lot about him as a fighter in my opinion.

*Liddell, yeah Liddell.

To be fair,

who has withstood Carwin’s power and survived? It’s ok to dislike Brock. Hell, lots of people do, it’s a big part of why he’s so popular. But when Mayweather/Anderson/Machida back out of punishing exchanges people call them brilliant fighters, and when Brock does it he gets called out for being a pansy who doesn’t like to get hit in the face?

When Brock was getting hit by Randy, he stood in the pocket and returned fire. When he was striking with Mir there weren’t any problems until he got hit squarely, then he went for the takedown. It’s not like Brock runs away screaming from a little cranial impact. This is the same guy who has survived botched Shooting Star Presses and double-concussed himself on the steel corner posts so badly that he could barely stand with assistance from his partner.

He’s plenty tough, but he doesn’t like to give his opponent the opportunity to pile three or four clean power shots on his chin. He knows he can take one or two from anyone, but more than that and the advantage starts to slip. Why on Earth would he concede a fight to his opponent when it becomes clear he’s at a disadvantage in a particular area?

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Aug 18, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Dislike Brock, nah, I’m a huge fan. The way he covered up and ran was hilarious but suspect. I’m not questioning his toughness, its his striking that may have a big question. Hey, even he called himself out on it in his post-fight press conference. He shouted out his striking coach and BJJ coach.

“Mayweather/Anderson/Machida” . . . that’s a stretch, they make their opponents punch air. They exemplify the art of I hit you but you do not hit me.

Well, it seems that the main point you're making is about his lack of skill

in the striking department, which is definitely a valid point. I guess my point was more about his mentality, rather than his skill level. To me, it’s no different than the above trio of (admittedly skillful striking) fighters who refuse to engage when it’s disadvantageous for them to do so. It’s all about mentality and gameplanning, and the mental toughness thing is part of that.

But yes, I absolutely agree with you that his striking skill is sub-par for a championship caliber fighter. He needs to tighten things up a bit and then some if he’s going to advance from anything but a hellish GnP fighter. Problem is, I’m not sure he really needs to learn any other skills, since he’s going to feature such a ridiculous advantage in the transition department. That makes me wonder if he’ll ever improve his striking enough to the point that we see him gladly standing and trading with top-level strikers.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

Lesnar has a crazy reach, all he needs is more time sparring. If he can simply stick the jab out in front of him with confidence . . . OMG!

the Ranking sucks

big foot needs to understand we all no MMA Ranking is F up but Ferdor is the man beat to many top fighters not to be the UFC is the number 1 promotion in the world so they have to have the number 1 fighters is that how it works check out www.mmaff.com to find more mma news

by Rob Cares on Aug 17, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Well, the idea that beating #1 makes you #1 is kind of the entire premise of lineal titles, which every MMA organization is based around. When Anderson Silva and more recently Frankie Edgar beat the #1 guys in their weight class they got the top ranking despite both having unavenged losses a couple years ago. I’m not saying I neccesarily agree with the idea that Werdum should be #1, but I’m kind of surprised there’s not more argument about it.

In any case, rankings are stupid.

he does not even have to be number one ahead of lesnar. but he should be ahead of fedor which he is not.

Or that he’s currently a better fighter.

He lost to an unranked out of the top 30 fighter.

Right.

The whole point of doing a meta-rankings assessment is to get as many eyeballs on the question as possible, and take the consensus opinion forward.

Those losses really do matter. They won’t matter forever, but they do matter today. If Werdum goes and cleans out the non-UFC HW guys, then he creates distance between the ‘present’ and his loss to a not-quite-ranked guy. Until that distance is created, he has to live with it, like Brock had to live with his loss to Mir until he proved that he’s over that particular hump.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
