Would you cut half a pound for $12,000? Thiago Alves wouldn't
I've certainly done more for less. I think I speak for everyone when I say 'Come on, bro.'
MMA Fighting has a featured interview with former No. 1 welterweight contender Thiago Alves, and I can't help but feel confused by some of his responses. For someone who makes their living by fighting, and has had recent layoffs of eight and thirteen months, it seems insane to me that he would so easily forfeit twenty percent of his purse, ($12,000) rather than cut half a pound. He claims that he weighed in at 171 lbs just prior to his official weigh in, but came in heavy on the dreaded digital scale of the California Athletic Commission.
"It was just a half-pound, so I'm sure my body could have flushed it out," he said. "But I didn't want to. I just wanted to concentrate on the fight. It was just easier for me to give up the money. Yes, we fight for money, but you also fight to win, and at the time, I was thinking I didn't want to cut the weight. I was just focused on getting ready to fight. When you're cutting weight and dehydrated, you don't always think right. In the future, that won't happen again. It can't happen again."

U dun' goofed, Thiago ...

Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.
I don' t get that one.

Easiest Weight Cut Ever, Huh Thiago?
Oh, well I guess that is true since you didn’t WANT to cut it. True colors indeed.
"We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again."
For 12 g's I'd cut a hundred pounds
Sure I’d only weigh 40 pounds after that but its 12,000
"If I woke up looking like that, I would run towards the nearest living thing and kill it." -Master Shake
We have to take the amulet to the banana king!
I can actually see a decent reason for why he would refuse to do the final weight cut.
He knew this was a bit of a turning point in his career, he’d already lost to Fitch, and he didn’t want to concentrate on anything but the fight. It sounds pretty weak, but if you’ve ever competed at a reasonably high level, you know just how important focus can be on performance. He also probably didn’t want anything negative to focus on during the fight, like being sapped of that last little bit of energy by the sauna sit.
Still, it is somewhat ridiculous that he didn’t take care of it beforehand.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
I think he's lying
I really do.
I think he got to that point where mentally he just couldn’t cut anymore weight. Taking two hours to cut half a pound is not taking his mind off the fight. Weight cutting is a fight in and of itself. I truly believe he just reached that point where he just couldn’t do it anymore.
Moreover, in the pre-fight conference Alves didn’t exactly seem focused on the fight and even during the fight it seemed like his mind was elsewhere. It just seemed way to easy for Fitch to do what he was doing and it seemed like Alves had given up.
