True Grit: Randy Couture Approaches the Fight of his Life Against James Toney at UFC 118
Randy Couture is a fighter, an actor, an ambassador of the sport, and he runs his own gym. He doesn't complain, and he doesn't make excuses. He's a five time UFC Champion across two different weight classes, and he's been in 15 total title fights in his career. He is a UFC Hall of Famer, and he's still competing at 47 years of age. Randy Couture is legendary, there's no argument against it. He is by far one of the busiest men in the sport of mixed martial arts, and still he finds time to put into training for his next fight, laying his body on the line for the fans, when he's got nothing left to prove. For that, I am thankful.
When Randy Couture steps into the cage on August 28th, he'll be facing a brand new challenge, a champion from a completely different sport, James "Lights Out" Toney. Randy has remained humble throughout the pre-fight hype, although Toney presents himself as an easy target for criticism. Toney on the other hand, says that it's laughable for Couture to be considered a legend, and a hall of fame inductee, with 10 losses on his record. That is one of many, many insults Toney has slung at Couture, and the sport of MMA in general, and it has not gone overlooked.
Some people will scoff at the idea that this fight is the biggest of Couture's career, but I feel that this is easily the most important milestone the former champion has yet to pass. Toney may be an aging boxer, but it's foolish to underestimate a man who's spent 22 years in a sport that focused solely on punching people. The boxer may not have been a power puncher, but with the difference in gloves, it would be ill advised for Couture to test his chin against Toney's come fight night. Toney is also 6 years Couture's junior, although, Couture has aged like wine, Toney...not so much.
Yet, there's more to this fight than simply not being a sure victory for Couture. Randy's most recent film, "The Expendables" just opened at #1 at the box office this past weekend. He starred along side the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Jet Li, to name just a few. "The Expendables" is only his seventh film, quite an accomplishment for a man who didn't try his hand at acting until he was over 40 years old. Certainly, Couture made a great deal of friends, and connections while working on the set, who will open up many more doors for his acting career. A victory, in a fight of this magnitude, only two weeks after the opening of his first #1 film, will definitely make him a more lucrative figure in Hollywood. Everyone loves a winner. Especially when that winner shuts up a loud mouth.
Couture is entering the final stretch of his fighting career, and he's set himself up for great success outside of the sport when the time comes. It's a positive story, in contrast to how another UFC Hall of Famer, Chuck Liddell, has ended his career. "The Natural" looks to end his flight through the sport with a smooth landing, whereas Liddell...crashed and burned. Don't misunderstand me, Couture could never win another fight in his life, and he'd still be the same man who destroyed Tim Sylvia when he was too old, and too small...but closing out his career as successfully as possible means he doesn't leave MMA as damaged goods.
As easy it is to visualize Couture coming across the cage at James Toney, shooting a double leg, and the fight ending a minute later, anything can happen. It's the variables in this fight that get the fans excited, the "what if's" that make us ponder the possible outcomes. The thought of what sort of commentary could follow if James Toney beat Randy Couture makes my stomach churn. The expected satisfaction of watching Couture pound out Toney is thrilling. Although some will cry "freakshow", I will simply be content with watching two men fight in a cage, one of whom, has a great deal of my respect. I suspect that come August 29th, we'll all be talking, one way or another...so let's enjoy the ride.

OK, First I'm a Randy fan . . . but I'll play Devil's Advocate
He doesn’t complain, and he doesn’t make excuses.
- Prior to the 3rd Liddell fight, Randy Couture stated that the accidental eye poke made him angry and reckless which left him vulnerable for the KO loss.
- Randy Couture’s was offered $3 million from Bodog to fight Fedor Emelianenko when he was no longer contractually obligated to the UFC. So all that talk about the UFC not showing him respect, money, etc. and how bad he really wanted to face Fedor were pretty disingenuous in my book. Note, he said that was the most money he was ever offered for a fight.
“The Expendables” is only his seventh film, quite an accomplishment for a man who didn’t try his hand at acting until he was over 40 years old.
If and when Justin Bieber, a celebrity gets 5 – 7 films under his resume . . . the last thing I’ll do is call him an accomplished actor. His name and popularity opened those doors. Now if you already have a popular name, decide to try acting and are nominated and/or win an Academy award like Cher, Barbara Streisand, Will Smith, and maybe even Jennifer Hudson . . . then I’ll pat you on the back and call you an accomplished actor. – I’m just saying.
What about the Rock? It’s safe to say that he’s an accomplished actor but I just don’t see him being nominated for any Screen Actors Guild awards.
End note: I’m a Randy Couture fan, but boy oh boy, does this dude gets a serious pass. He rarely gets called out on anything.
Red Belt: I saw Red Belt, probably one of the best MMA films . . . Randy Couture played well Randy Couture. The role was far from a stretch.

VEe is ANIMated!
No need for the “I’m a Randy fan” disclaimer, well, knowing people on the internet, maybe there is a need for it…you make great points. I suppose I made the comment that Randy doesn’t make excuses and complain because it’s a real rarity for him, when many fighters always have a “reason” not an excuse…or thats how they put it. lol
And when I say it’s an accomplishment, that’s just me as a person thinking it’s an accomplishment. Not that the films success was skill based…he was part of a star studded line up, but that doesn’t make it less of an accomplishment for Randy himself, I’m sure he feels like it’s a big milestone for him…and I do too. Your first #1 movie is a big deal, popular or not.

With the Bodog fight
was he in contractual limbo with the UFC?

The more I read about Tony and Randy
The more i look forward to the fight. I think this is the best match they could make with Toney’s first MMA fight. The age of Randy and the thought of “does he still got it” makes this fight look more winable for Toney. Also the almost mythical hands of the boxer and how much Randy will be outclassed on the feet just makes it very interesting.

Nice piece
Deep down inside I really want him to beat Toney and retire.

Redbelt sucked
I gotta say…. and Randy sucked in it. I still love him, but he’s no DeNiro.

What worries me isn’t that Randy’s “entering the final stages” – my worry is that those tires should have gone flat a while ago, and are bound to fail spectacularly at some point. And probably on the highway.
Why yes, I did have to blow $700 on tires two days ago. Why do you ask?

My same worries, but I’m banking on Randy displaying the same sense he has all his career, if things go down hill, he either needs to pick his fights well, or hang up the gloves. One of those well picked fights could be fighting for the title, and retiring if he loses…if he wins…well, I didn’t think that far ahead…

Tires are one of the few automotive investments that rarely fail to perform
based on their cost. I’ve always bought the best ones I can find at Les Schwab or wherever.

Best tires I ever bought were Toyo eight ply.
Ran those suckers for about 70k miles, on nasty logging roads and everything. Keep the air in ‘em and they’ll take care of you.
Anything that ends in ‘stone’ gets a big thumbs down from me.
