UFC 118 Results: Randy Couture Defeats James Toney in an MMA Clinic
It wasn't but a few seconds before Randy got an ankle pick and secured the take down, quickly finding himself in full mount against the boxing champ, James Toney. He proceeded to pound on him for the greater part of the round, then found the arm triangle when it presented himself. I respect Toney for trying MMA, but I'd have a lot more if I didn't think it was for money, and increasing his name value.
Couture got a huge ovation, the crowd was going nuts for this fight, chanting "UFC" as Randy pounded away on Toney's skull. After the fight, Randy was presented with his black belt, receiving yet another belt to add to his prestigious collection. From here, Randy will likely fight a decent competitor in the light heavyweight division, and put on some great fights for us to close out his career. I stand firm on my stance that this was the biggest fight of his career, and he certainly performed for the thousands of people watching. I won't be surprised if Toney never steps foot in the octagon again, nor could I give a damn. Go mumble in a boxing ring.

Yes, that was an ankle pick to start.
After Toney didn’t sprawl, Randy kind of did the automatic thing and plowed him over.
An ankle pick is funny to see. I was really hoping Randy would follow through and pry him down.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
My first prediction when the fight was announced I said Randy would look for an ankle pick to avoid the upper cut…I’m pleased. lol

The ankle pick wasn't picture-perfect technique-wise.
To effectively finish one, you have to either drag it to the side and pry it up to break your opponent’s base, or you ‘tap’ it and lock either a shoulder or hip down with the inside hand.
Randy got a pretty sloppy (but obviously plenty effective) takedown out of the deal, but it’s just about winning. Who cares if you look good?

Yeah, it definitely wasn’t textbook, but as soon as Randy grabbed it Toney started falling…
Gah, it really was just like a boxer coming to box, and a wrestler coming to fight. I thought Toney might at least have something…something better than “Hold your hands low, legs a little wider than normal, be ready for that uppercut baby!” for fuck sake man, all that time and thats all they came up with? I’d rather have seen Toney charge and try to land in a flurry at least. Ah well, I’m glad it’s over.

It's not like it's that hard to learn how to sprawl.
I’d never wrestled in my life, and after one season in high school I could stuff state champions two thirds of the time. I had a little advantage in that I’m tall, and can therefore bring a little more leverage against my opponents than most of the shorter guys, but I also had absolutely zero grappling experience going into it.
Disappointed in Toney’s lack of preparation. I’m with you, glad it’s over.

yeah right.
It looked as if Toney didn’t make any effort to learn grappling whatsoever. He looked completely lost, starting from the ankle pick till the inevitable finish. Of course you can’t learn to handle a world class wrestler training 8 months, but you should at least understand some basics.
No surprise of course, when I heard his trainer talking about “brazilian locks” I knew he picked a clown.
Right, it's not like you can stuff Couture even with a couple years dedicated solely to
takedown defense. But he could have forced Couture to go to his second, third or fourth chains, and maybe forced a couple striking exchanges along the way.
But like you said, it’s obvious he wasn’t even interested in trying to adapt anything.
