Looking at some of the impacts of Alves vs. Fitch 2
What with all the Chael Sonnen craziness, the Fitch Alves rematch has kinda taken a bit of a back seat to everything else.
In a fight that will decide who gets the next crack at the welterweight crown, Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves will meet up once again for a rematch stemming back to Ultimate Fight Night 5 back in 2006. Both were still green prospects, with Fitch taking it via TKO in the second round. Although each of these guys have already had a fateful shot at Georges St-Pierre, these two are still some of the best in the world. A loss to GSP is really not much of an indicator these days, and neither of them have really been embarrassed by anyone else.
For Alves, this is a shot at redemption. Caught by a well placed up-kick, Alves wasn't able to recover and was finally pounded out by an opportunistic Fitch. If Alves can keep this fight standing, he's a handful for anyone in the division. While I'm sure his ground game is much improved, his assets lie in his striking. With devastating leg kicks and KO power in his hands, his strategy going into this fight with Fitch should be sprawl and brawl all the way. I am a huge believer in variables, and being able to weigh their impact on a fighter's ability to win. With Alves, we see a man who has had a long layoff in the sport, and just had brain surgery. Along with skipping the media workouts amongst rumors of having trouble cutting the weight, and the head games that go along with fighting someone who holds a victory over you, there are a lot of issues that worry me. Red flag city.

I think Fitch can take this fight. Alves is coming off a year-long lay off and apparently is having serious problems cutting weight. I think Fitch controls Thiago on the ground en route to a comfortable decision.

I wouldn’t buy too much into the “weight cutting troubles”, the same was said about George Sotiropolous for the Pelligrino fight, and he looked liked death, baby stepping all the way to the scale at weigh ins. I put a big play on Kurt, and then he got trounced come fight night. I know it’s a little different because Alves has a history, but he’s made weight since the Hughes fight, I think he can do it here. It’ll be a disappointment if he misses weight again, and he’ll likely have to move up to middleweight since it’s been such an issue (or it gets blamed on the recent surgery and he continues on).

i think he makes the weight
but at what cost? thats what worries me. I hope he’s good to go and has an amazing fight.

Alves is stuck in a weird place.
He has the frame of a 155er but the muscles of a 185er.
Pain don't hurt...
hes tellin the media itsthe easiest cut ever
Which… probably isntgood. Means he lost muscle mass during the layoff.
So… we have potential for a weakeralves if helost muscle, or a weaker cuzits a hardcut.
Eitherwayive got 5 bucks on fitch so I’m cool with it as long as he gets to 171

I gotta take Fitch
If GSP couldn’t finnish J.F. I doubt Alves can.
If this goes the distance I think Jon wins it.
Grindhouse Fitch.

Love 'em both
But I’m rooting for Alves because he’s exciting to watch and the underdog here. I’m not sure how much his recent health issues are going to affect him or if ring-rust will be a factor, but Brock sure as hell didn’t have a problem with either against Carwin.
Fitch is a beast and his wrestling is top-notch, so if he can take Alves down at will (like the GSP fight) then this will be another 30-27 wrestling clinic. HOWEVER, if Alves has improved his takedown defense and keeps it on the feet then he has a damn good chance at winning this fight.
Regardless of the outcome, I hope this fight lives up its potential and these guys leave it all in the cage for our entertainment!

Agree with everything BUT
I’m rooting for Fitch and I’m picking him to win. Via UD, obv.
