Enough is Enough: Thiago Alves Needs to Move Up To Middleweight
The most notorious weight struggle in the history of the world no longer appertains to Oprah Winfrey or Kirstie Alley. That ignominious designation -- at least in the fight game -- now belongs to Gabe Ruediger Anthony Johnson Thiago Alves.
At yesterday's UFC 117 weigh-ins, in what has become an all-too familiar problem, Alves was unable to make the weight-limit for the third time in his UFC career. Although he came in at just a half a pound north of the 171-pound cap, that's little consolation to Alves who was fined 20% of his purse and will probably henceforth be dogged by questions about his ability to make weight. Combine this latest transgression with his previous failed attempts, as well as the fact that he tested positive for the diuretic, spironolactone, which can be taken to help shed water weight, after his 2006 knockout of Tony DeSouza, and there seems to be only one logical conclusion: Thiago Alves needs to move up a weight class.
It's been mentioned that Alves walks around at about 200lbs and therefore has to cut a massive amount of weight to make the limit. While I haven't the faintest idea of how tough it is to cut weight -- seeing as how I've never had to do it myself -- one would think that after having competed in the UFC for almost five years now, Thiago would have the hang of it. Problem is, he doesn't.
Yahoo! reported earlier this week that Thiago decided to skip Wednesday's open workouts in order to concentrate on his weight cut, and rumors were flying that he still had approximately 20 pounds to shed with just 48 hours left before he was to step on the scale.
Here's Thiago talking to MMA Fighting just 24 hours before Friday's weigh-in:
"[The weight cut]'s been easy. It's one of the easiest times it's ever been. I just didn't want to go to the workout and miss a day of working on it, because I wanted to make sure everything was under control and where it should be so I can make it easy on myself. I asked the UFC if I could skip the workout and do some real training, and they let me go. They had so many fighters already, so it was fine."
Oh, really Thiago? You could have fooled, well... everyone.
Jumping up to middleweight actually makes a lot of sense of for Alves and the UFC. He may not be the largest fighter in the division, but he certainly wouldn't be undersized. Add in the fact that there are tons of interesting potential match-ups waiting for him; such as Nate Marquardt, Vitor Belfort, Alan Belcher, Yushin Okami, or even Anthony Johnson. Not to mention the awesome battle that might take place between him and Anderson Silva should he notch enough wins to eventually earn a title shot (yes, I'm assuming that Silva will remain the champion).
Keep in mind, I don't believe this move should be made purely out of biological necessity. Alves definitely has the chops to make waves in a greatly improved, yet still lacking, middleweight division that is perpetually lacking compelling challengers. His striking compares favorably with the division's elite and his wrestling has improved to the point where it wouldn't be considered a deficiency in a weight class where only a few truly use it to their advantage.
If Thiago doesn't have the discipline to cut weight properly at this point in his career -- as in, not do 2/3 of it during the week of the fight -- he likely never will. I'm not usually in favor of telling fighters to "do this" or "do that," because what the fuck do I know, I'm not a fighter; but in Thiago's case, I feel like the writing's on the wall. Win or lose against Jon Fitch tonight, he should move up to middleweight, his welterweight odyssey needs to come to an end.

He's too short for middleweight
Add to the fact that it was a digital scale, instead of the usual scale.

Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.
Yeah and Muggsy Bogues was too short for the NBA...

He was a point guard
You’re afforded some luxuries as a PG. Height wasn’t a requirement.

No he doesn't
He’s a grappler, not a striker. He needs to be inside levers, not outside of them. C’MON!!

That is true.
Sorry, I don’t know you as well as I know Subes, so I can’t tell if you’re playing facetious Devil’s Advocate or not. So here’s the serious aspect of what I was harassing him aboot: Thai fighter who loves lead leg kicks needing length in the taller middleweight div as opposed to grappler like Palhares. I totally screwed it up by saying striker, so I see where you’re coming from.

I HATE GUYS WHO MISS WEIGHT.
That’s really it. It’s disrespectful to the opponent and to the promotion itself. This guy and the Anthony Johnson’s of the world need to nut up and move to the proper weight class, period. Stop trying to be the big bully and be a fighter who can show up ready to fucking go.
Toolbox.

I agree
He should’ve planned better and it’s insulting to Fitch to have to work hard to cut and Alves didn’t make it.

Once, I can forgive
If you come back and DON’T DO IT AGAIN. But when you DO IT AGAIN, in a #1 contender’s fight… boo. Just boo.

Unacceptable. If it’s your job to make weight then there is absolutely zero excuse to miss weight EVER, let alone repeatedly. It’s become a joke.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Enough with T Alves and Rumble Johnson at 170.
They both need to move up IMO.

least Rumble has been saying he plans to for his next fight
Alves is 100% adamant that he is a WW. He’s blamed injuries in the past (I’ll let any excuse slide once) and thsi tiem was talking how it was the easiest weight cut ever (maybe so easy cuz he didnt cut to 170 hmm??). It’s just… ridiculous.

Sucks for Thiago because he’s gonna be smaller than some middleweights, and I doubt he’ll be a force there, but you can’t fuck up this many times and go unchecked. You just can’t. Still hope he KO’s Fitch tonight. And I’m surprised how many people are thinking Fitch has this…have we forgotten that Koscheck couldn’t get him down? Not that Fitch can’t, but it’s no sure thing in my mind.

Quit yapping and moaning about it really! The guy has been out for a year with injuries including an irregularity in his brain and your moaning about him being slighty overweight.

If it wasn’t for the fact that his missed weight multiple times in the past, cuts a shit load of weight to make 170, and signed a contract to reach the welterweight limit, maybe people wouldn’t care. Minor brain surgery (if you ask me there’s no MINOR brain surgery, but this is what they called it) and some time off doesn’t erase past offenses, and doesn’t make this any better. He can keep the damn excuses to himself, nobody wants to hear that.

nobody gets too put out by A weight missing
Johnson missed weight last sunday. We all went “awwwww” and that was about it. It was his first occurence (That I know of at least)
Now Mr. Thiago…. nah. This dude has now missed weight in 50% of his fights in the past two years. That’s no bueno
Even a broken clock is right two times a day.
I think Thiago needs to lose 4-5 pounds of muscle. It’s an obvious solution to a very serious problem.
came in here just to say this
Instead of being a jacked monster of a man who can cut down to 172 pounds, lose a bit of muscle and make your weight, dumbass

Seems like a proper solution
Unless his muscle mass is natural (which doesn’t really seem like it)

QUESTION
Anyone remember when it used to be that when a guy missed weight, he gave a % of his purse to his opponent?
This is being fined and given to the CSAC if I’m correct. Is that something that has changed across the bored? Is it state to state? Promotion to promotion.
It’s not something I’m too knowledgeable or have paid attention to- but it just kind of dawned on me “Hey, they havent been giving the purse deduction to the opponent anymore”
