Mission Accomplished: Chael's Silver Tongued Antics (Post-Fight Edition)

36_ufc_117_weighin-sonnen_medium

Some people will argue a loss is a loss, no matter what.  Fair, enough, but I've got to say, Chael Sonnen's loss was as close to a win as anyone could have asked for.  Sonnen dominated the UFC's "pound for pound" best fighter on the planet, for 23 minutes, rocking him in the first round, and beating on him every minute of the fight.  It's a shame (for Chael) that he didn't make it to victory, getting caught with a late hail mary submission from the wily champion.  He surely would have skyrocketed to the top of the UFC's most recognized fighters.  Don't fret though, Mr. Sonnen, you didn't get the gold, but you're set to get paid some serious cash, and will still be one of the mainstream's favorite identities.

The mission wasn't as clear cut as the world might think.  In my mind, Chael's "mission" was to make the absolute best out of his title shot. All of Silva's most recent opponents have done next to nothing with the extra attention garnered by a title shot.  Sonnen stepped forward from the crowd, going for broke to get the most eyes on him as he possibly could.  The pay-per-view numbers aren't in yet, but it's safe to say that the numbers would be significantly lower had Chael went the route of Patrick Cote, Thales Leites, and Demian Maia.

Although he presented himself as one of the most confident fighters EVER, I fully believe Chael is a level headed guy, and he knew that Silva would be a hard fight.  Sonnen hinted at this in the post fight presser, saying that he expected more resistance from Silva on the ground.  He knew getting Silva to the floor was hardly even half the battle, the champion being notoriously dangerous off his back.  Sonnen will benefit greatly from Dana's constant stance that Silva is the best fighter in the world, because every major media outlet has heard it, time and time again.  Now, Sonnen is not just Silva's most recent victory, he's the underdog that came within minutes of defeating the champion 5 rounds to none.  He said it'd be a one sided pounding, and for all but a handful of moments in the fight, it was true.  The world doesn't care about Vitor Belfort fighting Anderson Silva now, they want to see a rematch.  An instant rematch will likely give Silva the biggest draw of his career, Sonnen gets another chance at doing the unthinkable, and we get more kayfabe from Sonnen.  So, don't feel too bad for Chael Sonnen, his career has been catapulted to a whole other level now.

Star-divide

Last night, although somber in defeat, Sonnen still couldn't hide his ambition.  After a lengthy question and answer between a Brazilian reporter and Anderson Silva, a pause came over the room, and Dana White looked at Chael, jokingly asking him for an interpretation.  Sonnen didn't miss a beat, saying that Silva wanted to do The Ultimate Fighter with Chael in an immediate rematch for the title.  The room laughed, and Matt Hughes awkwardly smiled at Sonnen.  I think it is safe to say no one in the room was against the idea.

As of right now, nothing is certain, as is the norm in mixed martial arts.  I know not everyone is okay with the immediate rematch, but with grumblings of Zuffa wanting to give Vitor Belfort another fight before the title shot, I think it's highly bossible that we'll see TUF: USA vs. Brazil, coached by Chael and Anderson.  For Belfort, if I could pick any fight, I'd set him up against Chris Leben at the end of the year show in a number one contenders match.  That fight would be nuts, and if any fighter deserves a shot to step up to the top, Leben has earned it this year.  I'm still buzzing from the adrenaline burst last night's main event gave me.  It was truly one of the greatest moments in the sport's short history, and I heartily suggest that if you know anyone that's on the fence about the sport, you get them to watch UFC 117.

that’s solid. although, this now means you’re competetion and i must crush you at every opportunity…

Good write up, but I’m not so sure we’re going to see TUF: USA vs. Brazil. They’d simply have to subtitle too much. I mean, hell, Nog spoke English and they still subtitled him. Would I like to see it? Sure. But it’s up to Spike, really.

Easy dude, you find guys like Thiago Silva. Guys who are “Brazilian”, not really Brazilian though. And thanks. :)

How it could work

I remember seeing something about the UFC inking a deal with some Brazilian TV show. Americans definitely hate subtitles and I think most Brazilians fell the same way too. So why not do the USA vs Brazil theme with Andy and Chael, but the Spike braodcasts would focus on whats going on with team USA, while the broadcasts focus on team Brazil. Then bam international blockbuster pay per view Silva x Sonnen 2. Just food for thought.

Well, they did put subtitles on an entire season of British dudes…

How is it

that Sonnen can get into all these fights and be steadily landing plenty of shots on these guys like Nate and Anderson and yet when the fight is over, Marquardt and Silva look like nothing happened and Sonnen’s face looks like fucking hamburger. How is that?

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Thats a good question, I don’t get it. I’ve seen it said that he’s not hitting hard, but that’s a crock if I ever heard one, he was doing some big damage earlier in the fight. It kinda helps his “we’ll see who’s tougher” bit though, always looking so rough, but doing well.

some guys are bleedders like fedor is. matt lindland landed one shot on fedor's face and his nose was bleeding.

some people have tough skin or faces. penn rarely looks bad and i guess silva is one of those guys as well. i would bet if or when jon jones mounted silva and came raining down with elbows that andy’s face would have a broken orbital bone, nose or cheekbone. probably will never happen b/c now andy will only fight 185 er’s. he knows now that jones and evans would beat him.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson (the winner will be jds)where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. You know that

Spike execs are salivating over the thought of an entire season of Chael soundbites.

Yes, Anderson did "nothing"

I’m sure if Mr. Dana White is as generous as people say he is, Chael walks away with no less than a million if this does above 600K

Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

Chael is going to get a nice check regardless of the buyrate, he sold the fight and backed up everyword. Dana probably already has a check written out and if just figuring out the final number to put to all those zero’s.

A season of Chael – yeah, that might be good, but he does have a habit of putting both his feet in his mouth. Then again, I absolutely don’t care for a season of Ed Soares misinterpreting Anderson Silva .

You rock, Kaleb.

That being said, everything with “USA vs Brazil” in it would be an extremely bad idea. No need to tease the tapout wearing Homer Simpsons out there.

Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.
