Ed Soares: "Why Should [Chael Sonnen] Get a Rematch?"

OAKLAND CA - AUGUST 07: Chael Sonnen punches Anderson Silva while on the ground during the UFC Middleweight Championship bout at Oracle Arena on August 7 2010 in Oakland California. (Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

From Percy Crawford of Fighthype's excellent interview:

"I mean, I don't necessarily think an immediate rematch is legitimate. It's not like he won by decision. You got submitted, man. Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let's be realistic, you're on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn't finish him? Why should he get a rematch?"

Looks like Ed Soares is up to his old bag of tricks as this isn't the first time he's questioned the validity of one of Anderson Silva's rumored or confirmed opponents. It's tough to know if he really believes his own words or if he's just protecting the champ who was less than two minutes away from losing his title -- although I tend to go with the latter. Either way, there seems to be too much money at stake for this rematch to not get made. From all accounts, UFC 117 is trending to have done better business than was expected, and surely a Silva-Sonnen II would blow those numbers out of the water.

I also strongly urge you click the link above and check out the rest of Percy's interview where Soares gives his thoughts on "Cigano's" performance, as well as Lyoto Machida's upcoming bout with Rampage Jackson. It's a great read.

So who should Silva fight, Soares? Seriously, he questions every opponent they put in front of Silva. One of these days Ed will quit trying to play matchmaker, I mean…a rematch with Sonnen would net some decent PPV numbers, I would think, which means more money for his fighter, and more money for himself. If Silva was really injured, get healthy, and take that fight straight to the bank. Easy money, right, Mr Soares?

Totally agree

Soares is shooting himself in the foot. If Chael fights someone else and loses, and Silva decides he’s old and bored and quits, everyone involved misses out on huge money. You gotta strike while the iron’s hot, and right now, Silva vs Sonnen is the hottest possible draw for a Silva fight.

Tyrana-SOARES Rex is being typical

I mean he feels Machida should get a title shot despite being KTFO

LOL, I didn't see this when I wrote my article

Which has more clarification

Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

Soares is only hurting Anderson

with statements like this. He’s hurting his image for certain, and probably hurting his career/earnings. A strong rematch victory would strengthen Silva’s legacy more than any other potential performance.

If you really don’t want to rematch him, make a noncommittal response or a flat-out ‘no comment.’

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
