UFC Officially Designates FightMetric as Official Statistics Provider

Picture_1_medium

I have been on a soapbox for a while now insisting that FightMetric become the CompuStrike of the UFC.  Part of this is how terrible CompuStrike is (witness their statistics during Showtime combat sports events), and part of it is how thorough, dedicated and accurate Rami's site has consistently proven to be (although we still disagree over Bisping/Hamill).  This is great news for them, the UFC and MMA fans everywhere that want to see MMA make the jump from niche to mainstream:

News Release - FightMetric® is now the official statistics provider of the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®), supplying the world's first comprehensive mixed martial arts (MMA) statistics and analysis system to the largest MMA organization in the world. The inclusion of official FightMetric data into the evaluation of both fights and fighters will, for the first time ever, provide media members and fans with a chance to track the history and performance of UFC competitors beyond simple wins and losses. ...

FightMetric provides its clients, including the UFC, with live round-by-round data during MMA events. The information is available online at UFC.com and other FightMetric partner sites, with FightMetric statistics powering fighter profile and events pages.

This goes beyond mere score keeping and record tallying - judges cageside during UFC fights will have access to live, updated statistics at the end of each round before scoring said round for one fighter or another (maybe we'll even see some more draws now)

Slight correction courtesy of the FightMetric staff:

One clarification, we don’t have anything to do with the judges at the fights. I hope we didn’t give the impression that they would be receiving or using stats in between rounds or anything like that. This is strictly something with the UFC. We have no connection with the athletic commissions that oversee judging.

Kudos and congratulations to FightMetric - it has my highest recommendation if you've never been there, and their recent redesign is awesome.  Go check it out!

I wonder if fight metric will score the round according to there stats

hopefully the stats Goldie and Rogan use will be a little better. Of course they could of just been lifting them in the first place.

What's up, boss?

Yeah, the release is a little iffy there – I don’t know if judges did have access before or if that’s new – but I’d almost rather keep the announcers away from them. They taint the audience enough, and I don’t want them to have stats to mention when they want to and bury when they don’t.

It would be great if they started doing results at the end of the round

displayed on the PPV like they sometimes do with boxing.

Uh, where are you getting this from?

Judges don’t have access to ANYthing but what they see in the cage.

That’s how I read it – that they’re now providing live stats to the UFC, whereas they did not before. Why else would the UFC need live stats during the card? FightMetric always did compilations before, not liveblog-style scoring.

I’m kind of hoping I’m right here and will spit fire and brimstone if the judges don’t know have access to live statistics.

The stats are for reference and historical purposes only

Not for use in actual judging. if the commissions made Fightmetric the official statkeeper and then implemented ruling to let judges see the stats, then we’d have something. SF judges don’t have access to compustrike.

The UFC wants live stats so they can seem more sporty. They want to be able to throw stats up there on the screen saying “BJ Penn went 24 out of 45 in round 1” blah blah type deal.

I wish you were, but you aren’t. Then again, Fightmetric uses judgment to determine what’s “significant”. The only thing worse than a judge using his own opinion to score rounds is a judge using his opinion of someone else’s opinion to score round.

You know for whatever reason i’ve always had a problem with these stat trackers both in boxng and mma. I’ve seen plenty of fights where I see the numbers and they just don’t add up to what i’ve seen. So i’ve long ago stopped depending on them and taking their word on gospel maybe one day they’ll come up with something better but to me all of them leave something to be desired.

I don't look at them as gospel

That would be advocating letting them alone dictate the winner of a round. I look at them as a potentially valuable tool.

We need impact sensors inside the gloves.

That would help a little bit.

As one of the guys at Fightlinker said, until they come up with a “garbage strike” category, the stats are largely meaningless. This isn’t tag, it’s not about merely touching your opponent, so landing a higher number of strikes doesn’t necessarily mean shit.
