If Kimbo Slice fought James Toney, would you rather it be MMA or boxing?

via cdn1.sbnation.com

via SB Nation-

During an appearance on Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour yesterday, Kimbo Slice discussed his openness to a potential bout with James Toney sometime in the near future. While Slice claims he hasn't yet been approached about the prospect of fighting Toney, the fight does offer a bit of intrigue. I would just like to know what he meant by 'fighting.' Slice didn't specify between MMA and boxing, but one could only assume his recent partnership with the infamous Shaw brood points towards the latter.

via MMA FIghting-

"Fighting is just something I love to do whether it's MMA or boxing," Slice said. "I tried MMA, but now I'm back to what my first love was."

"I wouldn't say I'm done with [MMA], you know what I'm saying?" Slice said. "But my door is always open."

"I thank god for the way everything went. It was a learning experience," Slice said. "I've been a street fighter, I've been cage-tested and then hopefully I'll be ready for the ring."

While I don't think many hardcore MMA fans would be clamoring to see these two step into any sort of cage, the ring might be another thing entirely. We've seen each man try and fail in MMA, and since each seems to have a propensity for the standup, why not let them have at it? Slice has never prescribed to the other fundamentals of modern MMA, wrestling, BJJ, ect. And while I'm not expecting Toney to be able to compete with the wrestling prowess of someone like Randy Couture after only a few short months of training, his dedication to that facet of the craft is obviously pretty questionable.

We've had our fun trying to teach old dogs new tricks. Let them get in the ring and see what happens. Can Kimbo Slice actually compete in competitive boxing? We still won't likely know, as James Toney is probably not the best yard stick to measure by, but at least it gives us an idea for his potential in the sport.

In what capacity would you like to see these two guys fight?

Do me a favor and vote on the poll after the jump

UPDATE------

As of about 12:30 PM this afternoon, the poll is right at 50/50. Pretty interesting.

I say who cares?

:P

Toney would kill Kimbo in boxing, and in MMA, Kimbo would take Toney down and GnP.

Neither fight would be too competitive.

I could see Kimbo just standing in MMA though

so Toney might take it in both cases.

ive been saying that fight should have happened over couture/toney for months. it would have been more competitive and made more money.

Dana showed his greed on this one. he was so desperate to bury boxing in bosten that he lost track of having a good fight as the co-main event. i would have prefered kimbo-toney on the televised prelims.

KIMBOPLEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alexander is absolutely horrific in the grappling game.

The only reason Kimbo pulled this beautiful ‘plex off is because Houtson stuck his arm around Kimbo’s neck, giving him all the leverage and position he needed to elevate, rotate, and decapitate.

The first defense against any move like this (as Hardcore Holly can attest) is to sag your weight straight to the ground. There’s no way to suplex/powerbomb a ~200lb loose sack of spuds.

That works most of the time, but some guys are strong enough to rag doll you.

I’m 155, when roll with guys my size or smaller, I can usually toss them pretty much no matter what they do. Just because I have enough strength and power to toss around 160lbs from almost any position. There’s bigger guys I throw around, too. Just not nearly as often.

There’s one guy, a 145lb purple belt, who kicks my ass. He grabs a hold of my ankle or behind my knee when I try to throw him. Even when I do throw him, he always counters. He rolls like a monkey.

Oh hey, I was 6'2" and 155lbs in high school,

max benching 310 legitimately, 225lbs for sets of 12 and 90 degree squatting 400lbs. Yes, I was some kind of freaky strong when I was in good shape, so I agree about rag dolling people with sheer strength. Although I always attributed it to the proper use of my height/length more than raw strength.

And I’m not saying it’s the definitive way to prevent a slam, but just doing those two things (get your friggin’ arm off his neck and sag your weight straight down) would have been more than enough to prevent that particular maneuver, strong though Kimbo might be.

Do you have a wrestling background, or straight BJJ?

I just started no gi last year but I grew up in a wrestling family. My uncle was 135lb state champ here in Oregon a few years ago and I have a few cousins who were ranked pretty high in state. I wrestled with them basically my whole life.

I love no gi. Its faster and more athletic, I miss the slams though. Its pretty instinctive too.

310 bench is nuts for someone that lanky.

Nice. I had one cousin and an uncle who wrestled,

but I never really even knew about it until high school. Which sucked, but I did sponge up all kinds of knowledge from wrestling there for a few years. Once it was clear that I wasn’t good enough to be at the top of the team, I moved on, but the lessons I learned were pretty invaluable.

I wish there were A) bigger people here that I could spar with, and B) reasonable no gi BJJ centers around here. Unfortunately, about the only combat styles people focus on here in the Philippines are boxing and muay thai. No grappling whatsoever, and it really shows in the local MMA scene.

That suck there’s no no-gi schools. I used to watch BJJ dvd’s and practice with my little brother or my cousins. There’s some really good no-gi dvd’s out there. Cyborg Abreu does a really good job walking you through everything. If you have a partner, you can get pretty good just drilling the positions he shows you.

I agree

It was pretty stupid Houston to try to pole vault of Kimbo’s neck.

Toney's grappling D is not horrific,

it’s non-existent. He didn’t do one thing except bear hug from the bottom to prevent GnP.

They should just film it in his backyard

That’s about the best he can hope for.

Or in somebody's basement

with a bunch of padding all over the walls. Then we might see their gas tanks in glorious action.

Also, it’s kinda sad we never got to see kimbo touch somebody up a bit. I mean what would it be like if some dude’s eye was hanging out of its socket a la youtube vid of a backyard fight? Daner would shit.

Kimbo is a fairly well spoken dude, who treats people with respect.

Toney is a crass mushmouth who can’t grapple to save his life.
I’ll take Kimbo.
