UPDATED: Did UFC referee Yves Lavigne says Koscheck will be eaten alive by GSP, also "scared" to strike with Daley?

Photo

UPDATE: Yves Lavigne is denying that he gave the interview in question and it has been pulled from the canoe.com web site. See more at BloodyElbow.com

UFC referee, and French-Canadian, Yves Lavigne recently had some choice words for Josh Koscheck, the next opponent for Montreal's own Georges St. Pierre.

Translated, that states that in Josh's last fight at the Bell Center, Josh was afraid to strike and was happy to hold Daley on the ground. The crowd booed and Daley, upset at the strategy, punched him after the bell.

Now, there are some fans that have that same attitude. They are idiots. However, they aren't refs. This guy is. It's almost certain that he will be reffing on this card and there's a big chance he will be reffing this main. Oops, not anymore.

Star-divide

Here he states that GSP, just like in the first fight, will dominate. His striking is improved. Josh will try to take GSP's head off with a right hand like Serra did and will fail.

"Je suis un peu surpris, car il avait dit qu’il ne reviendrait jamais. Les partisans ne l’avaient pas manqué lors de sa dernière présence ici", a lancé Lavigne, assurant du même coup que le Centre Bell serait plein à craquer, peu importe l’adversaire de St-Pierre.

Here he states that he is surprised that Josh is fighting in Montreal because after the Daley fight, he said he would never return and the fans didn't forget his last time here. He also assures the writer that the Bell Center will be filled with fans supporting GSP no matter who he fights.

Here he says that the challenge at 170 lbs hasn't evolved for GSP and after he beats Koscheck, there's only two fights left for him there before leaving the division.

Here he says that Jon Fitch is probably the next to fight GSP, but GSP already beat him for 5 rounds in a decision. The winner of the Kampmann/Shields fight would be after that and while Shields rivals GSP on the ground, he's "no good standing up".

"Ça ne serait pas surprenant qu’il prenne une pause d’un an et demi ou deux, a indiqué la sommité des arts martiaux mixtes. S’il veut monter à 185 lb et défier le Brésilien Anderson Silva, il doit prendre 15 lb de muscle, tout en n’affectant pas sa vitesse et son cardio. Ça ne se fait pas en criant ciseau."

According to Lavigne, he would not be surprised if after GSP "cleans house" at 170 lbs, he takes time off to rest and go to 185 to fight Anderson Silva after putting on some muscle the right way.

All in all, very interesting comments by Mr. Lavigne. Safe to say, he won't be reffing a GSP or a Koscheck fight anytime soon.  Au revoir.

Edit: The above article and the opinions that followed were made with the belief that the interview with Mr. Lavigne was authentic. The interview was recently taken down and Mr. Lavigne has stated that he never "gave an interview" to this author. As this story is still breaking, we at WKR will continue to keep you updated and we will have more information in the upcoming hours. If in fact these comments were not made by Mr. Lavigne, I can only offer my sincerest regrets for the commentary offered based on incorrect info.

From what I know you’re pretty close. I can’t say for sure because I know some Cajun French and it’s a little different. But you’ve got the main points.

I don't get why

a ref is giving his opinion on future fights. Seems like that could poise a problem with people questioning if he is being objective or not. Especially if he is reffing a fight with any of the fighters he talked about above in the future.

by Matthew DiRienzo on Sep 2, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly.

He’s stating fairly obvious things, and mixing in a little French-Canadian favoritism, and not staying above the fray.

Why should have have to stay above the fray?

If you trust the refs to be impartial, then you trust them to be impartial.

If you don’t trust them to be impartial, then why were you letting them ref before? If you’re worried about their biases, shouldn’t you be worried even when you don’t know what their biases are?

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

We know refs aren't 100% objective

We’d like for them to be. Any indication that they aren’t fucks it up.

You don’t want a movie to tell you that it’s fake while you’re watching it.

Which of GSP's fights has Lavigne reffed?

I wouldn’t say he has crossed some sort of line where we couldn’t conceive of his still being impartial. However, wouldn’t we be foolish to think he could say whatever he wanted and still trust him to be impartial? If he were walking around saying " I guarantee GSP will win" would you still let him ref that fight? Again, he’s not saying that, but if it’s his job to be as impartial as he can in the cage, I feel he should extend that to his comments to the press as well.

Quality reffing in a sport where it is common to have at least one bad or horrible call per event.

McCarthy was hardly beyond botching a call.

I’m not saying anyone is perfect. He’s a top tier ref and been around for a long time. That’s one reason why people like him.

That said, I don’t want to hear any ref advertising their bias.

by Rufford on Sep 2, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Well he's making comments about his fellow countryman and his opponents

That shows bias. McCarthy, not as obvious.

Whatever his motivation, this guy is, at the least, hampering his own career. I think people should question his intelligence.

US MMA needs some sort of referee quality control.

by Rufford on Sep 2, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

This actually reeks of the Judge Douglas Crosby debacle after UFC 112, plus some Big John for good measure. I can’t help but to think this does not end well for good ol’ Yves. Crazy Canuck.

Don't like the tone of the article one bit.

I also feel referees should be totally impartial during fights, but I think that they are also human beings entitled to their opinions in between fights. Though I would not want them to be as vocal as, let’s say, Dana White.

You also have to take the interview in context, he was addressing a main stream media (canoe), probably to try to boost the popularity of the sport. There is not enough fans in this part of the country if you ask me and people love a hero they can relate to (St-Pierre). That’s why the article revolves around the champ and not the life of a referee.

I personally think (though I could be wrong) that If he would ref a George St-Pierre fight, I would be even more strict of by-the-book with him just to show he’s not being partial to a fellow countryman in the ring.

Anyway, I say big deal about nothing. I don’t always agree with Lavigne’s way of reffing (sometimes he stops fights way too quick and @ UFC 118, maybe I was too drunk but it appeared like he took his sweet time to stop the Diaz-Davis fight), but he’s not the worst either, and he doesn’t strike me as biased in the ring.

and about the koscheck-daley fight

I was there that night and even though the crowd often acts like a spoiled five years old (expecting a GriffinVSBonnar slugfest), this time around it was obvious Koscheck was just stalling the fight for the whole three rounds, to escape with the victory. Granted, the rules allow him to do just that, but the crowd is also entitled to react to a fighter taking the most cheapest, safest and, incidentally, the most boring way to securing a victory. I know there was a shot at the belt in the balance, but he chose to play it, let’s say “real safe” to remain polite, instead of showing his superior skill set and prove to the fans that he deserves to challenge the champion. It worked well against Daley, but if history says anything, it won’t work against St-Pierre.

refs shouldn't do opinion pieces

for future fights, I’d hate hate HATE to see him ref that fight.

not retire

" il lui restera peut-être deux combats chez les mi-moyens avant de se retirer."

“…there’s only two fights left for him there before retirement.”

“Se retirer” means “pull out” or “leave”, not “retire”. “Retire” in english is “Retrait” in French. I suspect he means “before he leaves the division”, not “before he retires”.

Yeah, he meant take time off to put on weight for Anderson

I dunno why I didn’t catch that in my editing.
