Actual Threats to MMA: Media Blows Off Misaki's non UFC Ankle Injection
Last weekend, hardcore MMA fans and insomniacs alike were treated to a true five round battle between Jorge
Santiago and Kazuo Misaki at the latest Sengoku Raider Championship (I love typing that out) event in Japan. As a fight fan first and a critic second (shocked, aren't you?), one cannot help but appreciate the heart, skill and guts displayed by both competitors. The fight was entertaining to watch, involved talented fighters and was definitively decided late in the fifth - as pure viewing spectacle, it was excellent. In a week dominated by analysis of BJ Penn's history and potential future match ups for Nate Diaz (also, how fucking skinny does Mark Hunt look these days?), most MMA sites decided to throw up links to videos of the fight. A casual MMA fan could easily never know about how Misaki was able to actually compete that evening.
Dave Walsh reported on Monday evening - that's about ninety hours as of the time of this writing - that Misaki had received painkilling injections in his ankle (evidenced by the wrap he wore during the fight) in the lead up to his brawl with Santiago. Because of the lack of athletic commission/independent regulation of MMA in Japan, we don't know if Misaki was risking permanent damage to his ankle by fighting. We don't know if he was receiving injections in the locker room before the fight. In fact, we don't know if the painkillers weren't localized - indeed, Misaki, his opponent, or any other competitor in any other unsanctioned MMA event could be hopped up on Vicodin, PCP and purple Kool Aid.
I'm as guilty as anyone here. I blew off writing this piece in the interest of engaging in debates about BJ Penn's legacy and Karo's return to the UFC. Others have been focusing on insulting pro wrestling fans that now help to fund our sport, how to sell Edgar/Maynard will sell and - again - how fucking skinny Mark Hunt looks (really, it's pretty absurd). We in the MMA blogosphere spend a great deal of time casting our belly lint into candle wax and attempting to decipher the lessons the ripples have to teach us. Meanwhile, choosing to focus on reality, Walsh points out that he believes that Sakuraba (currently slated to battle Mayhem Miller at DREAM.16 in what will hopefully be that corrupt organization's last event) would not be sanctioned to fight in the US, for the very fact that he would probably not be cleared medically. Anyone that knows me knows I'm not a "sky is falling" kind of guy - however, having a well-watched MMA bout end in tragic injury because of insufficient or nonexistent medical oversight is the shortest path between our current zenith and a return to the Dark Ages. It can happen again, there are forces out there that actively want it to happen again, and we must be diligent in our crusade to make sure that no one - here, Japan or anyone - gives anti-MMA forces everywhere the ammunition they crave.
And if that means we miss out on some freak show fights, Misaki/Santiago or Japanese MMA as a whole, then so be it.

I’m not sure why you’re appalled this hasn’t received the attention you think it deserves. I can’t speak for other sites, but I know we passed on the DW story at Bloody Elbow. But:
1. The news broke right after a UFC weekend. UFC events are a notorious black hole for news.
2. This happened in Japan. This matters because a) people generally don’t care about the MMA scene over there and b) it’s hard to get quotes or otherwise do any sort of investigating. If this happened in the States, we’d have quotes from the commission, the promoter, the fighter(s) and/or their camp(s), etc.
3. We don’t know if Misaki took a Cortisone shot or something more “sinister.”
4. MIsaki technically didn’t do anything illegal. He may have put himself in danger, but that was a choice he (presumably) made on his own.
I agree that there’s an issue and a story here. I started a “shit that needs to change in MMA” piece at BE, and the absolute mess that is Japanese MMA is high up on the list. But I don’t think this story is a proper example of the failure of the MMA media in America. Readers, simply, just don’t care.

Perhaps the media should be guided by multiple goals that go beyond pleasing the readers.

Well, what exactly are you suggesting? Again, I can’t defend or speak for other sites, and I have no idea how widespread the story traveled in the echo chamber. We posted the story at Bloody Elbow. As far as I can tell, there’s been no update from Sengoku, Misaki, Santiago, etc. What else can we say about the topic?

Not until something bad happens. I’d rather preempt that media frenzy.

Which do you think was bigger?
This or the Carwin story?
I think obviously the Carwin story but I didn’t see much coverage of that either. Shit happens. What I was told is the MMA media “reports” the news and nothing else, so then you have to take it into your own hands if you want more. Call Sengoku.

Insanity. This guy fought on painkillers and God knows what else. I want that out of the sport.

… I did. Sengoku has nothing to add since what their fighters do is explicitly not their concern and my asking them to change that is futile. Thus I bash and hope they die.

If wearing tape on your ankles is evidence of injections of any sort….every athlete who has ever lived is guilty.

I think the author should learn a little more about whether a soft tissue injection of cortisone is even an issue for athletic competition.
by Jonathan Snowden on Sep 3, 2010 2:12 PM EDT reply actions
who says it’s cortisone? For all we know it could have been morphine since Japanese MMA has little to no regulations, especially for popular Japanese fighters.

I think you are missing the point. What is the story? A mysterious ankle wrap means there was an “injection.”
Beyond being tough to demonstrate, so what? A guy may have gotten an injection? That’s generally legal even when tested by the most strict governing body on Earth.
by Jonathan Snowden on Sep 3, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
maybe we need to take a stand, if what you say is even true. What if Jorge had tried to go for an ankle submission and since Misaki was injected with pain killers he didnt feel it. Jorge would be robbed of his win and misaki could be crippled. In america it would be illegal keith Kizer said this “That’s why we don’t let fighters, for example, to have cortisone shots into their back or into their hand before they fight because they can not realize they’re hurt and they keep fighting and the next thing you know they’re permanently damaged.” yes it wasnt illegal in the place he was fighting but that doesnt mean it should be forgotten
To your point about the proof of the injections Misaki himself stated that he had been getting them.

I think he is just trying to show off his new review for his book instead of the one he probably wrote himself.
I would like to hear what i wrote was misinformation? or is Jonathan Snowden the Bloodyanus equivalent of Joseph Goebbels? Anything that doesn’t tow the company line is misinformation.

Whether Sakuraba would get liscensed in the States largely depends on what organization he was fighting for. The athletic comissions more or less roll over for the UFC (see Couture/Toney), but if he was fighting for a smaller org there might be some questions raised. In any case, Sakuraba has at least looked better in his recent fights than someone like Chuck Lidell has.
