Koscheck responds to Lavigne's comments, "better get that resume ready Lavigne"

via 6th-round.com

UPDATE: Yves Lavigne is denying that he gave the interview in question and it has been pulled from the canoe.com web site. See more at BloodyElbow.com

If you read my story yesterday in regards to the comments that MMA ref Yves Lavigne made in regards to Josh Koscheck and his opponent at UFC 124 Georges St. Pierre. Lavigne said that Koscheck was scared to stand up with Daley and was happy to hold him to the ground among other things. Koscheck responded via his website blog:

"UFC referee, Yves Lavigne is clearly not suited to be a referee after his rant of personal attacks and opinions on me as a fighter.  It's supposed to be his job to look at a fight unbiased, but how can anyone trust this guy to fairly referee any fight ever again after his comments?  It's scary to think this guy has been calling fights in the octagon for this long. It's very fair to say Mr. Lavigne will never ref one of my fights again. I would never put all my hard work as a fighter or my livelihood in the hands of this ref.

The (UFC) and the commission would be irresponsible to let him continue his job- any call this guy makes would have to be questioned. You call MMA a professional sport?  Well, professional starts at the top. Never would an NFL, NBA or other major sports official state there personal opinions publicly about a player and keep their job.  I now question every call Yves has ever made as a referee. Hopefully no fighter ever has to step into a fight with Yves Lavigne as referee.  Better get that resume ready Lavigne....."

Star-divide

Koscheck is correct. A ref is supposed to be objective. Period. There's no mistaking this. Do I think all refs are 100% unbiased? No. But at least don't be stupid enough to tell me you are. I know movies are fake, but I don't want the actors to tell me during the movie "Hey, I'm an actor". If Lavigne had merely offered analysis of the fight, this would be a non-story. If he had merely made these comments, you could make a case for it being lost in translation. However, the whole interview with Lavigne reads as GSP fanboyism and dismissal of his opponents.

The response to this has been telling of MMA fans. Most fans say "Who cares?" Their motivation for that stems from their dislike of Josh Koscheck. "Heel" refs belong in the WWF and not MMA. A ref should not harbor biases especially in a fighting sport like MMA. I remember the fuss over the ref who called those BS technicals on Tim Duncan for laughing. It was clear he was biased as well. Also, it's not like Yves Lavigne is the most competant ref in the business. Matt Brown/Pete Sell? Mac Danzig/Matt Wiman? Nover/Bradley?

Josh is also right in that the commissions should take a good look at this. I'm not for someone losing their job, however, a nice fine should do. He also should never be allowed to ref a GSP fight nor a Josh Koscheck one.

(As an aside: Josh Koscheck stands MUCH more than GSP. Was GSP "scared" to stand with Dan Hardy? Thiago Alves?)

Edit: The above article and the opinions that followed were made with the belief that the interview with Mr. Lavigne was authentic. The interview was recently taken down and Mr. Lavigne has stated that he never "gave an interview" to this author. As this story is still breaking, we at WKR will continue to keep you updated and we will have more information in the upcoming hours. If in fact these comments were not made by Mr. Lavigne, I can only offer my sincerest regrets for the commentary offered based on incorrect info.

Uhhhh...

Which commission would be penalizing him? Aren’t all commissions different and all have different rules and regulations with which to govern by?

Also, has anyone verified the translation to ensure that it’s completely accurate? The problem with french from Quebec & France is that it can be so vastly different it’s quite commonly taken out of context.

If Vegas does it, the others will fall in line

Similar to suspensions. Sherk was suspended by CA, but he technically could still get booked by other commissions yet they won’t do it.

This his him.. and here is what he said, on radio.

1- Josh’s fight v Daley was very boring.
2- Radio asks what’s up with GSP’s most recent “boring performances”. Lavigne replies that GSP failed to finish his opponents but still delivered.
3- It goes downhill at the end when the host asks Lavigne’s analysis on the fight. Lavigne says he thinks Georges is better all around.
(While still unacceptable, note that this sounds nothing like full blown fanboyism. try to picture Kenny Florian analyzing the match up)

The interview ends and the radio hosts call Lavigne their MMA Specialist.

The thing here is that Lavigne is there speaking as a fan of the sport, addressing a pretty clueless crowd. They also talk about the positive effects of UFC coming to montreal, the education of fans in regard to the ground game…

He never would have given that interview to an mma journalist. He felt like he was completely outside of his refereeing duties while at home trying to spread the mma word. Of course he was completely wrong and this will probably bite him in the ass.

It doesn't matter if he's speaking as a "fan"

He is a referee and has to maintain the appearance of impartiality. We know he’s not 100% impartial, but at least act like it.

You can give opinions that are very basic. You can’t call fights boring or things like that or give opinions as to who will win.

Kos is right

It’s sad Yves is going out like a bitch thusly. How can he be considered fair and unbalanced from now on? It’s puzzling. Nationalism gone too far.

Koscheck is absolutely correct

If an umpire called Roy Halladay a pussy or Joey Crawford hated Tim Duncan’s face (actually true), they wouldn’t be allowed to work those games. Yves fucked up here.

I searched the original article and they added this:
“Notons que suite à un malentendu, les propos de cet article ont été recueillis dans un contexte non propice à la diffusion.”
That wasn’t supposed to get out. Journalism fail.

So Kos is vilifying him for something said in private?

That's what I got from the addendum

It was said not to be printed.

It never says it wasn’t said.

It doesn’t say it was made up.

Lavigne never denies making the statements.

Why would you give an interview if you didn't want it to be public?

Something smells fishy, either the canoe.com web site fucked up big time, or Lavine did.

You and me

I’m a reporter and you’re a judge for the NSAC. We’re chillin and shit talking about UFC 124 coming to our hometown. I got the tape recorder with me (cause I’m a reporter) and you start running your mouth about shit. So I turn it on. Technically, that’s bad journalism. That’s why they put that disclaimer up.

The thing is, an American paper would’ve kept the story up. Fuck it. But the Quebecois have a strong sense of nationalism and don’t a) want one of their own to lose his job and b) it to look bad on Montreal and possibly GSP.

Canoe is a big site (I read them as they had a big wrestling section). Making up quotes wholesale? I’ll call in the morning.
