Some thoughts on UFC 125

  • I re-watched the Edgar-Maynard fight, and I scored it the same way I did the first time: Maynard 48-47.  I gave Maynard the 1st round 10-8 (almost a 10-7), the 3rd round, and scored the 5th round a 10-10.
  • Dammit, Gray, learn some damn jiujitsu.  Now, I'm barely a blue belt in BJJ, and I saw multiple openings for an anaconda choke in round 1.  Instead, he settled for throwing weak arm punches from the front headlock position, which is a great position for Edgar to recover from.  Also, in the 3rd round, when Edgar held on to that kimura after Maynard passed to side control, he could have countered that with a far side armbar (a la Matt Hughes vs. GSP 1).
  • Brandon Vera lost me as a fan last night.  I'm not angry at his performance, although I was disappointed in his overt lack of heart.  What made me quit on him was his playfulness with the crowd at his grotesque broken nose after the fight.  He did the same thing with his broken orbital bone after getting dominated by Jon Jones.  What I want to see from a fighter is a strong will, and by joking around at his demolition, he shows me that he concedes defeat.  It pains to see a guy as talented as Brandon Vera simply accept his place as a second-tier fighter.  Sorry, Brandon, but I won't be cheering for you again.
  • Gray, I love you man, but you might not want to repeat that post-fight interview.
  • I'm not upset at the draw decision for the Edgar-Maynard fight; it was a fair and legitimate decision.  The Kim-Diaz fight, however, was a poor decision and one that is a perfect example of why MMA's current judging system is flawed.  The 1st round clearly wen to Kim, and the 3rd clearly went to Diaz.  I thought Diaz won the second round, and I knew that the 3 judges would not.  I subscribe to BJ Penn's claim that the only things that should matter in judging are damage done and submission attempts.  In the second round, Diaz out scored Kim in both categories.  Kim clearly out-grappled Diaz, but he didn't hurt him at all.  Diaz, meanwhile, was constantly throwing from his back and setting himself up for submissions.  Kim, while supposedly in the dominant position on top, was on the defensive the majority of the time.  Yes, Kim was never in any real danger, neither to strikes or a submission, but he was the one getting hurt.  Score: 10-9 Diaz.
  • Kim's postfight interview was... interesting.  His attempt to speak to the crowd was admirable, but that language barrier is a tough one to break.  I did like his challenge to GSP, though.  Now there's no way in hell he's ready for St. Pierre, but that reminded me of my all time favorite MMA quote: "You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip righ then." - Chael Sonnen
  • F**k you Antonio McKee.  I didn't actually see you fight, but I'm sure glad you lost.
  • Its sad watching Gomi fight now.  We all would wish could return to the fighter he was back in PRIDE, but all know will never be that man again.
  • Mike Brown's title defense over Urijah Faber at WEC 41 was the first MMA event I saw live.  I'm afraid I may have seen him at his peak.  Also at that event, I watched Josh Grispi choke out Jens Pulver.  I wasn't impressed with that victory, and I sure as hell wasn't impressed with him last night.  I think we all need to thank Dustin Poirer from saving him from possible death at the hands of Jose Aldo.

You're the fisrt person I've seen give that fight to Gray

I had it 10-8 gray in the first followed by a 10-10 in the second and I thought Frankie won the last 3, great fight though and Diaz lost brohiem nothing you can argue about there.

This fight for the fish is a fight to the death!

I had it to Gray as well, but not upset with the draw. If I have ever seen a draw, that was it….

I had it Frankie 4-2.

But I can certainly understand how some people would give 1-3/5 to Maynard and call 2/5 a draw.

Draw was the proper decision, painful as that is for me to say. Not sure the rematch is a crackerjack waiting to happen, but there’s plenty of drama to be cultivated there, for sure.

there should be no draws in title bouts. they should have one of the judges make a final decision.

On february 5th 2011 at UFC 126 Jon "Bones" Jones will show the world that their was no need for the MMA community to hype this man because this guy is a beast with many skills and i personally will feel Ryan "Darth" Bader's pain after this fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.
