Fans Interview Fighters III - Submit your questions for Nam Phan.
Greetings fellow mma fans! 2011 is here and "Fans Interview Fighters" continues, and this time with our first UFC fighter, Nam Phan. If you are not familiar with this series please check out the last two installments which featured Daniel Cormier and Ryan Couture.
I would like to start by announceing that "Fans Interview Fighters" is looking to expand. I have said from the beginning that this series is for all of us, and I have been contacted by another sbnation regular who has some connections to a few fighters and would like in on the action. If you have a way to contact a fighter please don't hesitiate to be a part of this. You can take the reigns or put me in contact with them, either way is fine and should help grow what we have going on here. If you do want to help contribute please leave your e-mail in the comments and I will be in touch to get the ball rolling.
Now onto Nam Phan. Nam is our first UFC fighter so i'm interested to see what type of responses we get and how type lipped he will be when our questions are about the business side of the sport and UFC as opposed to questions specifically centered around his career. Nam recently competed on The Ultimate Fighter Team GSP vs Team Koscheck. We then saw him slug it out with Leonard Garcia in the fight of the night at the TUF Finale, which would go on to become known as the most controvesial decision of 2010. Nam has a career record of 16-8 fighting everywhere from WEC, KOTC, Strikeforce, Sengoku, and now UFC.
Chael Sonnen is a black eye to MMA
Chael Sonnon was once viewed as the anti-Anderson Silva. He was the cocky American that was here to save the day. The only fighter in the world with the proper pedigree that could finally end the run of the world beater.
In basketball the ball never lies. While decisions often go awry, the come from behind and absolutely idiotic triangle that finished Chael Sonnen is getting sweeter and sweeter as time goes on.
After popping for performance enhancers at the completion of said fight, the ever-talking Sonnen appealed and won (well, sort of). Although he was able to get six months dropped from his suspension his latest legal romp is not just stupid, it is embarrassing for the UFC, MMA, and all associated parties.
Last week Sonnon co-hosted ESPN’s MMA Live and was as colorful as ever. Chael pretty much called Wanderlei Silva the UFC’s worst fighter and that viewers should avoid other MMA events because they were going to be a waste of time (paraphrasing of course).
At this point in his career Chael is quickly becoming something he should be desperately trying to avoid. In a push to hype fights he has went from super hero to political D’bag practically overnight.
This time around Sonnen may have bitten off more than his motor-mouth can chew.
He has plead guilty to money laundering in an occupation in which he does in his off time. Playing real estate tycoon may have been fun, but it indeed could be the nail in his UFC coffin.
If the UFC wants to avoid the negative press and stay on track to becoming main stream then they need to protect themselves and show why they are the best organization in the world.
They are world class MMA and will not put up with frivelous antics by even great fighters.

Some thoughts on UFC 125
- I re-watched the Edgar-Maynard fight, and I scored it the same way I did the first time: Maynard 48-47. I gave Maynard the 1st round 10-8 (almost a 10-7), the 3rd round, and scored the 5th round a 10-10.
- Dammit, Gray, learn some damn jiujitsu. Now, I'm barely a blue belt in BJJ, and I saw multiple openings for an anaconda choke in round 1. Instead, he settled for throwing weak arm punches from the front headlock position, which is a great position for Edgar to recover from. Also, in the 3rd round, when Edgar held on to that kimura after Maynard passed to side control, he could have countered that with a far side armbar (a la Matt Hughes vs. GSP 1).
- Brandon Vera lost me as a fan last night. I'm not angry at his performance, although I was disappointed in his overt lack of heart. What made me quit on him was his playfulness with the crowd at his grotesque broken nose after the fight. He did the same thing with his broken orbital bone after getting dominated by Jon Jones. What I want to see from a fighter is a strong will, and by joking around at his demolition, he shows me that he concedes defeat. It pains to see a guy as talented as Brandon Vera simply accept his place as a second-tier fighter. Sorry, Brandon, but I won't be cheering for you again.
- Gray, I love you man, but you might not want to repeat that post-fight interview.
- I'm not upset at the draw decision for the Edgar-Maynard fight; it was a fair and legitimate decision. The Kim-Diaz fight, however, was a poor decision and one that is a perfect example of why MMA's current judging system is flawed. The 1st round clearly wen to Kim, and the 3rd clearly went to Diaz. I thought Diaz won the second round, and I knew that the 3 judges would not. I subscribe to BJ Penn's claim that the only things that should matter in judging are damage done and submission attempts. In the second round, Diaz out scored Kim in both categories. Kim clearly out-grappled Diaz, but he didn't hurt him at all. Diaz, meanwhile, was constantly throwing from his back and setting himself up for submissions. Kim, while supposedly in the dominant position on top, was on the defensive the majority of the time. Yes, Kim was never in any real danger, neither to strikes or a submission, but he was the one getting hurt. Score: 10-9 Diaz.
- Kim's postfight interview was... interesting. His attempt to speak to the crowd was admirable, but that language barrier is a tough one to break. I did like his challenge to GSP, though. Now there's no way in hell he's ready for St. Pierre, but that reminded me of my all time favorite MMA quote: "You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip righ then." - Chael Sonnen
- F**k you Antonio McKee. I didn't actually see you fight, but I'm sure glad you lost.
- Its sad watching Gomi fight now. We all would wish could return to the fighter he was back in PRIDE, but all know will never be that man again.
- Mike Brown's title defense over Urijah Faber at WEC 41 was the first MMA event I saw live. I'm afraid I may have seen him at his peak. Also at that event, I watched Josh Grispi choke out Jens Pulver. I wasn't impressed with that victory, and I sure as hell wasn't impressed with him last night. I think we all need to thank Dustin Poirer from saving him from possible death at the hands of Jose Aldo.
My best attempt at UFC 125 Predictions
I hope everyone else is as excited about tonight's fights as I am! Although everyone seems to be pumped, I think I can beat everyone with my predictions!!!
I can't wait to hear your comments!!!!!
Here they are....
The perfect way to put the finishing touches on the holiday season is UFC 125. The celebration is not over. Call the boys and pull up a chair!
This awesome fight card has the makings of an incredible fight night that is sure to have a ton of fireworks and action.
The calm before the storm is upon us. Can Frankie Edgar win again as the underdog? Can Chris Leben prove that the post-steroid fighter is better? Can Nate Diaz submit his way into title contention? Can Clay Guida continue to be the UFC’s most exciting fighter but get a win?
Time to play Ms. Cleo.
Wait till you see my upset special!!!!!
During the weigh- ins one of the funniest things in MMA happened right before our eyes. Two falling stars entered with walkers and diapers, or was it just Phil Baroni and Mark Coleman? Actually, Phil looked to be in very good shape and prompted me to ask… ”what is he taking?” Tavaras is a tough fighter that is hoping to use the New Yorker as a stepping stone. Let’s be honest, the loser of this one could be the next on the UFC’s chopping block.
Everyone knows Phil is going to start strong and drag early. Tavares will weather the early storm and Rope-a-dope long enough to tire him out and get a TKO win.
Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier
Grispi is a young Bostonian that is looking to make a home in the UFC. He won four straight in the WEC and could be the next real competitor to challenge for the belt. No belt here, he will take on Poirier, a game fighter who will look to out-dual Grisip in this battle of little guys.
Grispi went from fighting Aldo to Dustin. While it puts him at an uncomfortable cross road, he should win this one. He has a knack for finishing fights out of no where and this could be one more highlight reel finish.
Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens
This is one of the most promising fights on the card. Both of these guys are exciting in every outing, and will have no problems doing it here. Marcus Davis is in no man’s land by losing three of four and another loss puts him in a very bad spot. Stephens may be more than just a Lil Heathen, he is a huge challenge for Davis. His stand up isn’t as good but his wrestling is better.
I am going to go a bit different than many outlets. I not only think Marcus Davis wins this one, I think he wins it decisively. While Stephens’ wrestling is better, he is smaller. Davis will be able to use his length and boxing initially, and a surprisingly strong ground and pound display to finish the fight.
Is there any doubt that this will be an exciting fight? Guida is a fighter that pushes forward 100% of the time. He is arguably the most exciting fighter on the UFC’s roster. The big question in this one will be will Gomi be the fighter he was in Pride, or the one that showed up against Ken-Flo?
DING… Guida rushes to the middle to meet Gomi…This is where it gets interesting. Gomi has impressive one punch power. Guida tends to be reckless and leaves a ton of angles that can be exploited. If Guida stays tries to drop his head and slug it out, then it could be a quick night. He opens up for a nasty uppercut that with Gomi’s KO power could end the bout. Instead of push push push, he needs to use that energy in bursts taking advantage of his experience and comfort in the cage to dominate the former Pride champ. If Guida can keep Gomi in the cage and on his back then he will win. I don’t think he will be able to do that, and the overall skill set of Gomi allows him to eventually hit one of those gaps and finishes the fight.
Nate Diaz is the UFC’s bad boy. He is both hated and loved every time he walks into the cage. He welcomes the Boo Birds with a smile and often a win. His jits makes him the same as a home run hitter. Instead of getting walks, opponents keep the fight standing to stay out of his area of strength. Kim has shown no lack of confidence coming into this one. He is planning on defeating Diaz and starting his won title run.
Diaz will use his hands to disrupt Kim. Nate may not have KO power but his version of punches in bunches is often as effective. Kim is a wrestler but will initially try to keep this one standing. If it hits the ground Diaz will try to lock onto an arm or leg and finish it. If Kim gets in trouble he will look for the take down, putting him into a bad spot. His jits is good but eventually he will make a mistake. Watch out for a slick submission from the bottom off of a scramble or take down. Diaz wins his third straight and gets a huge bump in competition.
On paper Vera has the tools to be a champion (but you know what you can do with that paper). Thiago throws leather and will be head hunting. Both fighters need a good win, and they will be pressing to get this one. Vera has always been a confusing fighter to watch, sometimes he shows up a beast and others he doesn’t. If he doesn’t show up for this one then he will be in trouble. Speaking of looking bad, you can’t say anything good about Thiago’s fight against Rashad Evans. While the loser more than likely doesn’t get cut from the UFC, it is a start to the end.
Overall Vera has the tools to dominate Silva, but I am not sure he will be able to put it all together. I expect an onslaught of punches and a TKO stoppage at some point in favor of Silva.
Talk about your complete opposites… Leben has been busted for steroids, a DUI, and spritzing, while Stann is the All American hero. The good guys don’t always win, and once they step into the cage none of that matters. A win for Stann officially puts him on the UFC map, a loss by Leben puts an end to his current title run and solidifies him as a career gatekeeper.
My largest critique of Stann in the WEC was his inability to improve his combinations and striking. So much that it was often telegraphed and a good fighter with a decent staff could game plan against it. He has started getting out of it, but in trouble he reverts back to it. If he does this against Leben then he will go to sleep. Leben is a brawler and is never out of it till the final bell. Expect this one to go to the ground…I know I know… When it does Stann will be tested. In my upset special, Stann over Leben by GnP.
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar
Is it me or is this bout not getting the attention it should? These are the two best lightweights in the entire world! How weird is it that the champ is an underdog? I can’t wait for this one. Edgar will try to use his quickness to be in and out and avoid Maynard’s punishment. He will try to mirror his second Penn fight, and if he does then he will have all but cleaned out this division already.
Everyone seems to be picking Maynard. While Maynard is tough, it could be time for him to suffer his first loss. However could it be that Edgar just had Penn’s number, or has he really improved? I see Gray being Gray and winning a very close split decision in a bore fest that only wrestlers will love. He will be the stronger man and will use his size to slow down Edgar.
Optimistic for Franke Edgar vs Gray Maynard at UFC 125
Reposted in part from SBNation's Cageside Seats. We need traffic! lol
via www.ufc.com
Anyone who gets to know me well enough will agree I'm fairly tolerant. When it comes to poor, disappointing or lacklustre fighter performances I believe in second chances and giving fighters the benefit of the doubt in the face of widespread criticism. For instance I was willing to look at certain factors in the Anderson Silva vs Cote / Leites fights while others weren't, although Silva truly lost me in the mockery he made of the sport against Demian Maia which was one of MMA's all time low points in my opinion.
With that in mind I think a lot of the criticism since the Gray Maynard vs Frank Edgar rematch was officially made has been unwarranted and exaggerated. For months we've heard it's a match up that will generate little interest and will have to be propped up by a stellar card due to the inevitable dud the main event would be. I even saw some critics write off UFC 125 completely when Jose Aldo pulled out due to injury but I can only assume these critics also happen to be hypochondriacs.
Edgar vs Maynard part deux has the potential to be a great fight. While I have no problem with a strong card supporting it I disagree with others who say it really needs it but I'm probably in the minority. We all know for any Pay Per View to be a success the casual fans with disposable income is the target audience. Unfortunately in the run up to this fight I don't think Edgar or Maynard have been marketed that well by the UFC, especially Edgar their new champion. Even after two back to back wins against legend BJ Penn maybe they still don't want to invest in Edgar because they believe or hope he won't be champion for long, something I felt they did similarly with Anderson Silva when he first took the belt off Rich Franklin (UFC even tried to give Franklin a sense of home town advantage in their rematch). Maybe the UFC still remember Edgar's prior loss to Maynard and are bracing themselves for an even less popular champion.

What MMA needs to go forward to the next level in this new decade that is approaching.
There has been alot of talk of boring fighters and guys who won't finish fights. What the UFC needs is someone with a great all-around skillset with some serious charisma to go along with it. I look at the UFC roster and i don't see too many guys that fit this profile. Jon Jones has the skills but does he have the charisma to reach the masses? Anthony Pettis might be another one but let me see what he can do with Gray Maynard (yes i think he beats Edgar on January 1st 2011) Anybody out there know any rising stars that meet this criteria? Someone will need to step forward in the UFC if they are to reach the next level of popularity and also become more mainstream(for the casual observer) in the United States. Somebody that everyone wants to watch fight in the Octagon.
Did GSP overtake Lyoto Machida as MMA's Most Boring?
Lyoto Machida was once known as the type that "manipulated the rules in his favor to win."
Does finishing one fight a year mean a fighter is trying to finish???
Although extremely boring, the art of Machida kept him on the winning side of fights.
GSP proved against Koscheck that he can win, but has GSP taken over the persona asthe UFC’s most boring?
Over the past two years GSP has only been able to finish two fight. His stoppage against B.J. Penn was without a doubt a rare one and Matt Serra was nothing but a one hit wonder.
While stating that GSP is boring may get its own share of debate, one thing that can’t be questioned is his ability to finish. He has all of the skill in the world, but he chooses not to destroy.
Money doesn't bring happiness...but have you ever seen anyone pissed off on a Jet-Ski?
In his last 15 rounds it is far fetched to find one that he has lost, however it is just as difficult to find one where he laid it all out on the line and pushed for the finish.
Action vs. winning is not a debate. A fighter’s job is to win. Sure, they all say that being interesting is the priority, but winning is everything.
Kalib Starnes, Junie Browning, and Kimbo are all exciting and interesting fighters, but they all sucked!
Is game planning and his camp partially to blame?
Many feel that it is unfair to call GSP boring, and they may be right. GSP’s understanding of MMA is a part of the reason he is arguably the best in the world.
The combination of the brilliant minds in his camp, and his understanding of the fight game put him at an extreme advantage. Combine that with his athletic ability and experience, and you have one of the best ever.
This know how helps him game plan and fight in an intelligent manner. While keeping his chin safe and out of trouble so that he can win is great, it does not always generate highlight reel knockouts, submissions, or strikes.
He is simply not willing to take three or four of their punches to land one of his.
This same safety net also results in him playing a prevent defense. In this case it simply prevents the opponent from doing any real damage, while he does the same.
i expect this debate is going to get a lot of attention and tons of comments!
What do you guys think?
